Pain in the glass
Pain in the glass
All,
Happy Tuesday!
Question: does anyone know if there will be any issue getting a replacement windshield for a '90 80 quattro?
When I was researching rear glass for this car, there seemed to be a lot of confusion between the 80 quattro sedan, 80 FWD sedan, and CQ... many suppliers seemed to be quoting the wrong thing.
I looked on one of the VAG online-parts-lookup sites and they had 4 different windshields listed... it looks to me like 893845099C is the correct one. Can anyone confirm that?

Re: Pain in the glass
I have wondered about this myself. I was told the B3 quattro windshield is NLA. I was also told the the B4 quattro windshield is available, but I would have to install an antenna on the body somewhere.

...and fits?
The antenna thing wouldn't bother me too much... there's another one in the rear window, and I rarely listen to the radio anyway.

Re: Pain in the glass
I was told it fits. I havent tried it yet. I have a nasty chip in my windshield, if they can't fix it, I may have to replace it.

Re: Pain in the glass
Peter,
Thanks!
I actually got a recommendation from my former boss at the German auto repair place... he's got a guy he's been using for 15 years for Audi, Mercedes, and BMW that he's very happy with.
If that doesn't pan out I'll contact Don although he may not want to travel to where I am which is in the northern suburbs.
Thanks!

Re: Pain in the glass
Folks,
Just to close the circle on this... I called the guy my former boss recommended and he never called back. So I called Don Cotton and I am *very* happy I did!
He was great to work with, punctual, and did great work as far as I can tell. He made a big fuss when I first called him about how much of a problem it would be if he found rust where the windshield attaches, and I didn't pay much attention because this car is almost rust-free.
Well long story short, it's pretty much rust-free except in one place: where the windshield attaches! He came out, removed the old glass, and there was rust everywhere on the mounting flange. He told me what needed to be done to fix it and even gave me a can of special primer he got from a friend who works in a body shop. I fixed the rust (hopefully!), and he came back today and installed the windshield.
It also turns out Don is a bit of a mirror-mounting-button whisperer.
One of my back-burner projects was trying to adapt a B4 rear view mirror to this car, as the original mirror was pretty deteriorated and it appears most of the other B3 mirrors out there are too. I had a spare B4 mirror with the mounting button and he said he could remove the button from the new glass and install the B4 one, which he proceeded to do in about 10 minutes. So in addition to having an intact windshield, I now have a slightly larger, non-crappy-looking mirror!

Sounds like me, last year. "It'll be fine, the windshield never leaked, go ahead and remove the old one..."

Re: Pain in the glass
I just ordered a coupe Quattro Windshield from Jim Ellis Audi and they canceled my order due to high risk of breakage on the windshield.
Local pickup only, or you can set up your own shipping via independent shipping company.
Thanks a lot for nothing.

Re: Pain in the glass
Wow that stinks!
You'd think if it was packaged to arrive here safely from Germany or wherever, it could make it to your house, but apparently not.
But if it's available from Jim Ellis, it should be available from your local dealer, right?

Re: Pain in the glass
Don't know as i have not called them, but it is my understanding that most people that call the local dealer walk away empty handed.
So when I found one on the web I pulled the trigger, you know the rest.

How much for insurance to cover your costs if it breaks?

Re: Pain in the glass
Since they are not willing to ship the insurance was not an option, I did ask when I called to inquire why my order was canceled.

Re: Pain in the glass
Figured I let you guys know that a local audi dealer was able to get me one. Bummer it will be at least a year before I can get it installed.
