Eli's 200 20v Avant, S200 R?

Post by paradox11235 »

Well, it's the end of an era, I'm finally selling my sedan (to a good friend who got tired of the issues with his 20v) and getting my Avant roadworthy.

I'm not doing anything too crazy here, mostly documenting it so I have a place to organize my thoughts, of course any input is welcome 8-)

Here's what I'm starting with:
Image

Image

The poor thing was going to be gutted so I traded a fully dressed AAN for it to save it. The driveshaft was removed because the bad rear diff mount was improperly diagnosed as a carrier bearing, the interior is a bit of a mess (sagging headliner and the like), has comfort seats, and the intake had been hacked up and was missing some bits, had a 20v intercooler in it...

Good news is its not rusty, had Konis, SS brake lines, gutted cats/removed center muffler, and hopefully more... And it came with a spare rear wiper motor, fingers crossed it works.

So far I've:
-Reinstalled the driveshaft, put the intake back together with what looks like a new 20v intercooler I found at the pull and pay
-gotten rid of the hideous wheels
-driven the thing to Denver
-re-sealed the whole bottom end
-done the timing belt/h2o pump and t stat
-installed S6 steering wheel
-V8 rear tails
-replaced almost every drivetrain mount
-Built a1racing coilovers with 400# front and rear springs
-installed aftermarket brembo F50 calipers with pagid red pads and a8 rotors
-replaced the clunky rear diff
-wired up econoseal-motronic 55 harness for VEMS
-installed Volvo k24, RS2 replica manifold, 525cc injectors

There's plenty left to do, thankfully I have most of the parts already... :drive:
-treadstone intercooler install
-V8 front bumper/turns/fogs
-V8 aluminum door sills
-S6 avant rear sway bar
-redo headliner
-LED cluster lighting
-poly snub mount
-short shifter
-replace pass. frame horn
-paint?
-C4 climate control?
-lots of little nagging issues and broken bits

I'll be posting some photos if anyone is actually interested, should be a decent transformation... I've never had so many parts to work with at once, but cash from selling a car plus collecting parts for years is pretty effective.

Eventually I'd like to run V8 door cards and wire up the lock/unlock button, install the S6 tilt/telescoping steering column, UrS seats redone with suede inserts, rear seat heater switches. I'm going to see how feasable it might be to modify and mount the more aerodynamic roof rails as well. If I'm feeling adventurous I was thinking about trying to wire in an early B5 central locking module with a matching FOB with an appropriate key blade cut and mounted in it. There's also a composite earlier 5k/scrirocco style spoiler in the works that I may get depending on how it turns out.

Sweet! We definitely want to see the transformation, do post up without hesitation, please!

Love the color and I like the fact that you're doing practical things to it. Sort of similar to the goal for my avant.

What mystery? The fact that it doesn't have side repeaters?

Yeah, I was under the impression that all the 20v 200s had them

Ok I'm guessing either the euro ones don't have them and you have euro fenders for some reason or it was repainted and they filled the holes?

I inspected them pretty carefully and I don't think they're filled. I'll have to check and see if the wiring was there. Maybe I should get a history report

Just now looked at this. Looks great! I love titan grey on these cars! I'm glad you were able to save it from getting chopped.

Just curious, is swapping for an S6 tilt/telescoping steering column a pretty involved procedure, or more or less just a hardware swap?

The column swap is fairly involved, custom brackets and adapting the column covers and everything. nuugen documented it somewhat on motorgeek. I figured since I'm doing the column covers for the steering wheel and I have the column I should use it someday

And small update, forgot to take a picture, but oil pan/pump gaskets and timing belt stuff is all done. Forgot how much work that is... And euro lights are installed. Next is rear brakes and whee bearing, and a new battery. Also forgot how bad this thing needs a windshield...

First order of business now is the passenger window regulator, and the clunk in the driveline that apparently wasn't the rear diff mount. I guess the forward diff carrier bushings may be toast as well...

Also gotta build the coilovers, I hope my Konis are in good shape.

I almost forgot to mention the awesome goodies that came with this car, an OEM cargo cover in good shape and a WORKING REAR WIPER MOTOR. Hallelujah. Going to throw that baby in with an inline fuse.

Hell yeah! Coming along nicely! I have a slight driveline clunk in my avant too. Curious to see what you find.

Nice avant.

I just had the rear diff mount along with the front mounts and the bushings holding the diff front bar changed to my sedan.
The clunk dissapeared totaly. Before it sounded like someone was pounding the rear axle with sledgehammer everytime I changed gear.

Previous owner had the driveshaft off because he thought it was the carrier bearing, joints were cleaned and greased. :D

Amazing car! I think everyone needs to do a window regulator at all times.

Lol so true. I'm thinking of stocking up on them so I can just replace them all at once.

I have all the regulators I need, going to get them out of storage (I.e. Parts car). Three of them just need to be cleaned and lubed.

I installed this today though... Haven't hooked it up yet, but it just needs 12v and ground. Autodimming compass mirror from a6
