Thats the wrong kind of sweating to be losing weight. Which is too bad. because it's so easy!

I know when I use to live in Davis, it felt like I was constantly in the path of a giant hair dryer. Hated it!!!

time fer the next update. things have been hectic and whatnot so i'm doin' what i can in between on my car.

more suspension time. i've got it figured out how to fit the front ext. adjustable konis in the rear strut tubes. they are the same length shaft wise, but there is a little tab on the bottom of the front cartridge that makes it stick too far out of the tube to put the cap nut on.
this is with the little tab..
Image
this is with the tab ground down..
Image

Image
i ground down those little tabs on the bottom to look like this...
Image

then i had the top metal rings turned down 4mm (this is after they were turned)...
Image

next up there is the cartridge dia. difference. i just grabbed random bits of pipe until i found one that worked. the diameters are 1 3/4" I.D. and 1 7/8" O.D. galvinized exhaust pipe. i painted it black so it don't rust where i cut.

these....
Image

go on like this....
Image
Image
Image

the tape is to make the pipe a tight fit so they don't go no where's. i used the green tape because i white tape is too cracker :P

so, once the sleeves are on, the fit like this....
bottom

top

viola' i think it'll be cool once she's done.

next up is the rear diff. i obtained a rear urq diff from Mr. fruitypants (patrick) back towards the beginning of the year and am finally getting to install it! yey!! i hate the NA gearing for all road use and launching. to me, guys with type 44's are going plenty fast with their turbo gearing and i think it will work great in my car for my uses. i've heard of someguys switching to the 4kq gearing with relatively stock power levels in urq's and i'm sure it works good for that, but once you start pushing the power up, the NA gearing is too short in 1st gear for a decent launch as shown by javads 120mph 13 second passes IMO. we don't really have much to choose from gearing wise, so please don't anybody come tell me about all the ideal gearing choices available for the subies, eclipses, and stuff like that

the urq diff is different in the way it's put together, but dimensionally the same. shouldn't be too hard to retrofit the stuff for the lock mechanism.

i swapped out the diff lock switch so i could use my connector and not have to cut any wiring. for some reason the tips are different, but once i got it in, i check it with an OHMs meter to make sure contact was good and it works fine. the bigger one is the 4kq part.
Image

something else i wanted to play with while i have stuff apart is the B3 vs. B4 struts. the B4's have waay more offset and really push the wheel outward. the B4's also share the same front outer CV's as the V8q's oddly enough and have huge splines :D

this what the B4 struts would do for me wheel clearance wise..
Image
this is the B3
Image

this how i'd love to have my car sit, but it's on the bumpstops :(
Image

so this will have to do
Image

oh, and just for fun sake, and because everyone else who ever switches to big brakes takes a pic, this is the difference between the puny stock stuff, and real brakes

:stupid: TT right?
derracuda

Post by derracuda »

TT one of these days. we'll see how things go. i'd like to do the V8 install first and get those issues sorted out before dealing with the whole TT issues. V8 isn't gonna be right away. august is full for me and i need to get this current stage finished first.

Nice job on the Konis, anyone want to buy a couple of used rear yellows?

You going to clean up that rear diff? What so special about it?
derracuda

Post by derracuda »

i did clean it, it just has stuck paint on it. and it's a urq rear diff...so 3.89 gearing, and that will go well with the 5kqt tranny i have to go in as well. i just need to swap the axle drive cups before it's pretty much ready (ok, and the diff lock thingy..........stupid diff lock thingy)
derracuda

Post by derracuda »

so tonight i went to swap the drive outputs from my 4kq diff to the urq diff and found this.....

GAH

working on a solution.

84 4kq halfshafts and you can use the Ur-Q outpur flanges!

Or make with the funky Torsen and use your original output flanges. Seems to me the 4kq casing weighs less than the Ur-Q unit.
derracuda

Post by derracuda »

they weigh about the same. both are aluminium

Are these something you are producing? If so, what is the time frame for public offering?

time frame is..i need to see how they work first and i'm in the middle of a couple unexpected issues that reared their ugly little heads while implementing this stage of upgrades. so, meh, i dunno exactly. i want to make sure they are top notch ready to go before selling them to anybodies :-)

WOOOOOT

ok, rear CV issue is solved. dumb luck puts me with a spare 84' 4kq with the big rear CV's  so my car will be on the road the next time i come here to sac, no diff gear swappage required!!!

man, i'm so happy i nearly jumped and hit my head on my car while standing under it (it's on the hoist) :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Cool, this mean that the URQ rear differential is a bolton solution for my 80Q -83 :) Now I only need to go find a suitable 3.89 tranny in my cellar and then go buy the guy with the URQ diff a few rounds of beer to get a decent price.

You's crazy!

YESSSSSSSSSS, the car is together and i gave the brakes a little break in and then for some semi good stops and it feel NOICE!!!! hehehe. these 400# springs are great! i have no swaybars on right now and the sucker feels like it did with my old setup. ride is a little firmer, but still very liveable. i'm VERY happy.
derracuda

Post by derracuda »

pic time! i got the sway bars back on and then took it for another drive and whew, it's fu-lat. this thing is amazing now and i can't wait to carve up some decent roads. sacramento isn't known for very good cruising roads. my billzcat1 brakes are still on the break in, so i've been relatively easy on them. i can't wait for some real stoppage :D

here's the MC setup before i messed with it....
Image

this is a V8q MC with the 4kq reservior. here's how i rerouted the lines...
Image

luckily my dad has a drawer full of odd brake and fuel line junk and he found this T for me so i dinnit have to cut and reflare the lines in standard american style flares....
Image

after everything got put together and bolted up tight my friend trevor and i went for some test driving to make sure everything worked out good :D
Image

Image

it's still mega dirty here, but doesn't show. i washed it tonight and will take some freshy pics soon...
Image

this is some extra stuff that doesn't have anything to do with my car really, but it's still interesting to see...i mean, everybody likes to see a wrecked vehicle!

yesterday (saturday for all future reference) my friend trevor and i went to visit javad and pick up some goodies and on the way back we had to sit in traffic for about 40minutes through davis,CA and it was HOT, like 50C. no a/c and stuck with tons of other cars all putting out heat. ugh. but the reason was some persons truck decided to try and kill them :tard:
Image
Image

we also passed through benicia,CA and saw the crazy construction for building a huge new bridge 8)
Image
Image

last but not least. trevor had a cool idea and we tried it out. it turned out prety good IMO..just that there's a bimmer in the pic! :P

Image

EDIT: i forgot to mention that the reason i didn't take my car is because it wasn't finished. today i drove around and and reeeeeeally like the turbo gears. i can do 80mph at a tick over 3k rpms!!! yesssss. and it's everybit just as fast. this is gonna be sweet.
