Small Chassis Radiators
Small Chassis Radiators
From casual research it seems that 4kq radiators are slightly smaller than typ89 units. Anyone compare the 2 in person? They are a bit cheaper and I'm hoping to get one without the neck for the aux rad.

Re: Small Chassis Radiators
My buddy Sterling has one in his car and it looks the part. Real clean without the AC condenser. He's had the worst (unrelated) luck and hasn't had his car out yet but is turbo'd using a stock 7a long block.

Re: Small Chassis Radiators
Yeah, I think it's plug and play.
I'm thinking this (Core Dimensions: 470 X 379 X 36 mm) http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinf ... cc=1431748
Instead of this (Core Dimensions: 477 X 377 X 42 mm) http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinf ... cc=1009077
The only thing I'm not 100% about is the 379mm width as the stock CQ unit is already tight.

Re: Small Chassis Radiators
4kq rad drops right in the Cq.
Regarding the heat capacity I'm unsure of any gain or loss in capacity vs. stock in a TC'd application.

Re: Small Chassis Radiators
I run at a "normal" 94°c with a ratty rad so I bet that drops a bit with a slightly smaller new unit.

Re: Small Chassis Radiators
That looks pretty neat, but I'd think that one could have a welder put some aluminum end tanks on a good condition OEM rad for less than $300.

Re: Small Chassis Radiators
The OEM units are brass (I don't believe they are pure copper). I had a local shop get a new brass core and reused 4kq endtanks. I ended up paying $325 for a nicely rebuilt radiator that ought to last a while.

Re: Small Chassis Radiators
I traded an old Ron Davis rad (034) for a 7a because it did not clear the intake. Not crazy about aluminium over brass.
Re: Small Chassis Radiators
Be really careful about which 4kq radiator you buy. The only ones in Worldpac are Nissens are they're really poor quality. Very fragile fins and cheap endtanks. They are also notable thinner than the B3 radiators by specification. The only B3 radiators in Worldpac are also Nissens, and are all-metal. The quality is awful. Autohaus AZ sells Behr OE radiators, which have nice aluminum cores with composite end tanks. They fit perfectly and the core appears to be of much better design than the other ones I messed with--robust, but dense fins, lots of rows, etc.
I'm seriously considering one of those ching chong radiators now, thanks for the link yoda. They're only 40mm thick though...so, assuming they're reliable and fit ok, an upgrade from what I have now, but probably not the same capacity as a real radiator like the Ron Davis ones.

Re: Small Chassis Radiators
Austin, the ebay one you say is a decent buy? worth it to install into my CQ? Id like to have a better performing radiator considering its 110 degrees about 8 months out of the year in Texas. Although, it stays around 85-95 majority of the time.
Re: Small Chassis Radiators
Not sure they recently came on the market I have never seen one in person. Your best bet for keeping cool is having the stock aux. radiator installed along with the rest of the system operating properly.Kuma wrote:Austin, the ebay one you say is a decent buy? worth it to install into my CQ? Im still running on G11 too. Is there a difference between the Blue and pink?

Re: Small Chassis Radiators
Slightly different corrosion protection between the two and the G12 G12+ G12++ are longer life. You CAN'T'! mix the two. I like the G11 it's slightly cheaper and well it's not pink. If you want the latest greatest that is G12++ which supposedly can be mixed with G11 G12 and G12+ but to be safe I would flush the whole system thoroughly before switching.Kuma wrote:Im still running on G11 too. Re: Small Chassis Radiators
oh right on, i knew i couldnt mix them, but i didnt know the difference between the +, ++, +++ or what have you. Thanks for the excellent info.
I have trouble finding the blue stuff at the local parts stores, (forgot the acronym you guys use) and when i do find it, i have to order it and wait a few days. I was thinking about swapping to the pink stuff, just cause its more readily available.
which would be better suited for the HOT texas weather ???

Re: Small Chassis Radiators
FYI G11 can be had at the BMW dealer and some auto parts stores for reasonable money and comes in a gallon jug.

I thought I heard NAPA stocks it.
Also, too bad this is a bit more than my budget as it's about the perfect size: http://www.jegs.com/i/Flex-a-lite/400/6 ... ProductId=

That is interesting. Any thought to optimizing it for large manifold clearance?AngryTaco wrote:For anyone interested, Im currently working on an all-aluminum radiator for Ben and I. Working with a couple local shops on this right now
