Project: my first 20v
Re: Project: my first 20v
That's a beauty! Nice find, Dave. I'll have to keep an eye on Letgo a little more often. I thought it was more typically used for stolen bikes and hand tools lol.

Re: Project: my first 20v
Alex is the engineer, and I think he has done that before on one of his cars. I think its called a helmholz resonator. I see them alot on intake systems in cars and trucks. Just an empty can appendix looking thing that must be sized to cancel out the intake sound. I remove that dumb stuff immediately.PRY4SNO wrote:I seem to remember one of the Seattle area posters being an audio engineer, perhaps he can explain further. Was it Alex, or Pat?
If I understand correctly, it creates a double wave form and cancels out the resonance in a selected frequency range. Tough part is figuring out where your drone is and selecting the right J-tube based on the frequency you're looking to eliminate. Grain of salt disclaimer applies, this is not my field of expertise.
regarding the exhaust, I almost consider a cat and a turbo to be like a muffler. So on a turbo car you can get away with less where on an NA car it would be loud as hell.
I usually do no cat , one resonator, one muffler, If I want it to be fairly quiet and tolerable when I leave my neighborhood at 4 AM. My urq had one borla straight through muffler , and now it has two borla straight through and its on the quieter side for me it sounded much cooler with a single muffler but had some drone for sure.
If you want no drone a good middle ground would be to add a small vibrant (or some brand like that) resonator
Re: Project: my first 20v
PRY4SNO: it's really odd the type of stuff that pops up on let go around here. I picked up a mint mitotoyo 12" dial caliper for $30! I needed a new one for work anyways haha.
Afterthought: My 80q has a 3" turbo back. That has no cat, a vibrant bullet resonator, 1/2 a borla straight through muffler, and a magnaflow dual 2.5" X muffler. It's on the quieter side for sure, but that's kind of what I wanted for the old 20vt. Dave was telling me with a cat and my old stebro system, his titan car is almost too quiet. He is talking about possibly cutting out the resonator on it

Yeah I think the stebros are pretty quiet.
Basically ever car I have is either quieter than Id like most of the time, or too loud at times. I would love to make a muffler with a bypass that is internal to the muffler like the new Sport model Audis have . That was one thing I loved about my RS4 was having the best of both.

I actually thought it was kind of loud on my 20vt. My 3" setup is quieter, and has almost no drone when on the highway.

Well gentlemen... I think I'm done with this project... I have no motivation to work on it, and haven't for months... For those that have been watching, if you are interested in it, shoot me a PM. I WILL NOT sell any of the parts I have amassed for this car, unless the shell sell without them.

Re: Project: my first 20v
Well, with a few almost insulting offers, I've decided to just push on putting the car back together. Over the past couple weeks(slow times at work), I've dismantled, cleaned, painted, and rebooted the front CV shafts.

The joints felt good, so I just cleaned them out, and repacked them. Next will be the front strut housings.

Re: Project: my first 20v
Not gonna lie, glad you still have this project. You're the right guy to see it through. And some 20v in your life is a good thing

Re: Project: my first 20v
Well, thanks to a lot of factors, I've decided to move this project to a other owner. I believe his plan is to AAN it, so that will be fun.
I'll be putting parts up for sale soon. There are a bunch of parts I picked up for this, that he doesn't want.

Hate to see it go. I hope it's in good hands.DE80q wrote:Well, thanks to a lot of factors, I've decided to move this project to a other owner. I believe his plan is to AAN it, so that will be fun.
