Why make a separate order for the TB kit from AutohausAZ? Since you're doing a big order from 034, might as well just include the TB kit and save on shipping costs. Also, what's the down time difference between FRP and IMS for the head work? I'd factor that in, as well.
True story! I will most likely use IROZ for the majority of my work as they are less than thirty minutes from my house. Then FRP and 034 for anything else. Autohausaz will be my last go-to. This parts list is pretty flexible as I haven't started ordering yet. 8-)

All reputable vendors. I was just thinking along the lines of logistics :)

Have you considered upgrading the s/s valves to inconel? For the record, I opted for s/s exhaust valves but am curious about your manner of approach.

I wrote a reply but it got baleeted somehow.

Did you at least pull the Merc before kablammo? I dunno about the short deck + 95.5 crank... its gonna be a revkiller. Would it be enough to change cam profiles? I dunno. Just something to think about. I'd try to find the unicorn 92.8 crank if I was you.

Yes, on boost I was creeping on him. It was a really good battle. I certainly considered that crank as an option as well, but I think building a reliable high RPM engine is fairly cost prohibitive and I think the 271 cams will do well even with limiting RPMs to 7900. Also, moving from 2.22l to 2.5l will be in my favor in terms of making solid power. :P I can't wait to see how it does!

So wait ... educate me, Is the “short deck” built using the eurovan crank in the AAN block?
I have a friend who just built up an AAN with this and let me drive it , it was really impressive. Just under 500 whp at only 22 psi and max torque before 3700 rpm with a newer Xona rotor turbo

Short deck stroker is just stock AAN block with either a 95.5mm crank or 92.8mm crank, 144mm rods, and shortened (wrist pin to piston top) pistons.

If you're ok with a 7200 rpm limit, then it's a sound plan... Well unless something has changed in stroker development...

I will call Jeff and discuss. I would really hate to be limited to 7200 rpm. :wtf:

I agree... if the reliable limit is 7200, might as well run an OEM cam and get all the spool back into the usable range.

Re: Ben's Oceanic 4kqt - BBQ prep

Post by 85oceanic »

Update time guys. So I really want my car to back up and running for Battleborn this year so I've had to temper my expectations for what can be completed prior to the event. I performed removal and diagnosis of the engine and found I spun my #1 rod bearing. After some deliberation, I decided to have IROZ build the bottom end. I really wanted to go for a stroker for some time but ultimately I feel that my driving style really enjoys the upper RPM and I really love to hear that 5 cylinder sing! So it's going to remain the stock stroke and step up to a 82mm pistons. Also, the cams will finally be getting installed. Over the last couple of months I have been taking care of small things here and there.

Exhaust and charge pipe / AWIC system revised...

Also engine removed and off to rebuild...

Anyways guys, that's it for now. I don't have a lot of time for a written update today. I will fill in the details later. I hope to see some of you guys at BBQ this year!

Well FINALLY update time. Oceanic is back! Here is a quick run-down of what's gone on...

Engine rebuild and improvements...

Final specs came to:

IE Tuscan Rods
Weisco Pistons
Cat Cams (1012339)
034 high rate valve springs
SS valves
Head Studs
Fluidampr front balancer
Tommis belt drive equipment (cam/crank for timing belt)
(Iroz assembled the bottom end, I took care of the top end, Gerner @ FRP degree'd the cams)

Build / install pics:

Image

Image

Had to flat bed the car to the shop for install...

Image

Installation work:

Image

Image

Image

Image

How everything sat after install before heading back up to the house...

Image

Back at the house lots of detail work was handled including working on the new AWIC set up...

Image

Image

Finally got to install and hear the exhaust that Colin @ Iroz made for me last hear - love it.

Added rear heim joint tie rods from AKmotorsport (now Verkline)

Image

Image

Image

Lastly added a VEMS round serial gauge for engine monitoring. I need to work on a gauge mounting solution as I have recieved some critisizm regarding the gauge pod. I have been looking at 2bennett - but at a 500 dollar price point it is hard to justify.

Most recent drive:

Currently I'm still in the break-in stages. I'm excited to take it off spring pressure and turn up the boost! :drive:

I don’t mind the gauges where they are honestly , any one giving you shit over the placement has never seen the interior of a B2 to realize there is no where to put gauges and also have it look stock .
I consider it a necessity having some extra gauges in my car so I used this piece below , and I put mine where the stereo was and if I do ever put a stereo in that car I might put in the map pocket .

I love it. All of it. Car is really on a whole new level now. Interested to see how the new AWIC set up performs.

Can't remember, are you using w/m injection?

Regarding the gauges, is there any way to utilize the plastic cards people use on rearview mirrors to have a multifunction display? I remember they were around when I had my B6. Or even repurposing a P3 vent gauge somehow? Having one display to show different parameters (with low/high level alarms programmed in) would be pretty cool, keeps things streamlined and OEM+ looking.

Thanks guys! The car is just on E85. So far the updated AWIC is running strong. I was out in 100+ degree weather and never saw over 50c when I used to see close to 90 on hard pulls. I'm very excited as to how well the car seems to be doing so far. Of course, I still have lots of small stuff to work out.

Just for curiosity sake, has anyone here actually seen a 2B gauge pod for the B2 chassis in person? I'm interested to see a good picture of one as I have yet to see one.

Is the 2B pod a replica of the taxi pod? If so those are meant for the early dashes and won't line up properly on the later dash.

A51 raid I missed that lol ... You guys make those 5 cyl’s any faster down there in Vegas and Area 51 will be raiding YOU for your technology .

What about a tablet setup? for my URQ I’ve been thinking about getting a tablet that’s compatible with VEMS that I could just clip in ... that way my car will look OEM but I can display what I need when driving .

I've seriously considered it but I feel like it will take away from the driving experience. I'm around cars that are Ipads with wheels all day long. I want to get into the 4k and feel like I stepped back to a simpler car, but much, much faster. I guess if I wanted a fast Ipad I would get an RS3.
