What kind of crank pattern do these have, does a standard flywheel bolt up?

Looks to be the same as b7 RS4. But I am trying to find a used flywheel to test out that theory. Everyone wants like &500 for a used one though. I just wanna borrow it!

I may have an old b6 s4 flywheel you can borrow- would that be helpful?

Thanks for the offer but unfortunately it won’t work. Wish it would. The rs4 flywheel is 10 bolt vs 8 on the s4. Trying to make sure I can use an rs4 clutch like I think I can.

Had some battery troubles, for some reason. Had this battery in the trunk and the starter would just click. Added a 2nd big battery from my b6 and same result. Left this little battery on the charger and ran some quick jumper cables, and we’re in business. Brand new 2ga wire from the trunk should be fine, I’m thinking maybe the ground situation has a problem. Will tackle it later.

On a new note, engine cranks and has the factory s8 pump in the tank. We have fuel and crank, but no fire due to immobilizer issues. Either the chip was done wrong, or the Ecu is FREAKING OUT because the OEM canbus starter sequence is not part of this situation. Might have to run some factory interior modules. Drat.

Awesome progress.

How will you figure out what exactly is required to get past the no start issue with regards to what interior modules you need?

Any luck sorting out which interior modules you need to make it run?

Sorry been busy this past month getting married! 8-) :D Havn't had any time to work on the car at all.

All good with the car now, got the ECU back ON my wedding day, so I was specifically told "no way" to working on it that day lol. Got to it sunday night, and took this video this morning! Seems to be pretty straight! WHOO HOO! Radiators and wiring it all into the car is next.

Welp, looks like b7 rs4 clutch kit is a direct bolt up! This is great news. Bolts up 100% (only put 5 bolts in) and starts the engine as it should. The clutch I’ll end up getting won’t need the timing wheel on it so that will save some $$ too, as I can order a b7 rs4 kit without the trigger wheel.

One more hurdle cleared very easily!

Have a big generic radiator going to a friend tomorrow to get ports moved so it’ll work with the factory s8 radiator hoses. Pretty easy fix and I think it’s gonna turn out great!

Yeah, been working out well so far. Very excited to have some coolant in the car so I can have some time to mess with vagcom and double check stuff while its running. I'm sure we will have some issues with the ECU tune but I'm very glad to be where I'm at.

Finally got around to getting the radiator welded up and fit in there, it’s a pretty big core so it’ll require some extra love for the support bars under the bumper but it should work fine. Got it heated up all the way to full temp a few times and that worked out well. Revs very easily to 4K, speedo input says it’s always at 255kph so that’s good news, it doesn’t think it’s at a stop all the time, alleviating some concerns I had about rev limits.

I didn’t have the computer hooked up the other day, but I’m pretty sure I had the thing bouncing off the rev limiter, it’s such a low limiter(6800) I’m not used to it sounding so low vs my old cars. So, I think we’re in business.

B7 s4 transmission will be here next week. Then off to make mounts. Want to do a euro TDI trans but will see if the b7 s4 one will hold power first.

Feelin good!

well done! I was very skeptical with the cooling when you started this project.

But looks like you figured it all out!

Yeah I blocked off the ports for the secondary radiator and we will see how this goes for now. Can always add one later.

Is that a single pass radiator or a triple pass?

looks single LARGE to me. i see no signature weld marks or HAZ on the tanks indicating internal partitioning. in one side, out the other.

Yeah, single pass for now. Might not be a bad idea to make it a triple. That could be pretty easy really. We will see.

Been trying to figure out how to make some strong axles. Here are d4 s8, stock CQ, b5 s4 and b7 s4 outer cv’s next to each other. Looks like I will be able to use the b7 s4 axles without the ABS ring and clearance the backside of the bearing housing a little bit. I think that will be ok, and I’ll kill the ABS idea for now. May be able to put ABS rings on the inner transmission flanges at a later date. Inner cv’s will all be d4 s8, so they should be indestructible in a car this light.

Did a nice sneaky battery relocation. Runs up through by the heater Inlet in the rain tray and to the main terminal for all the engine shit. Image

This B7 S4 trans is also gonna go in over the next week, so I can start making mounts and get axles measured.
