So I drove the car to Carlisle - 1100 miles all told. Other than the AC condensate line getting plugged briefly about 2 hours into the ride everything went great!

So naturally, it's time to pull the engine and put this fella in there!
Image

First the exhaust got shat out the back:
Image

Then the engine was pulled - had some fun with the gopro on this one:

Image
Image

Shocking how clean the rear main seal was behind the flywheel:
Image

Then I rolled it out and powerwashed the mofo

Before:
Image
After:
Image
Subframe is pretty too!
Image

I sold my Maserati this last week so some of the funds are going toward this project.

I ordered a Jetex Cat back exhaust from the UK this week:
https://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/performa ... -tailpipes

and also have an AZC 4.11 B4 locking rear diff to work with the 01E 6 speed on the way from Latvia

So now the next step is to take out the dash and start on the wiring and integration of the AAN harness

Also am going to mock up the AAN in place and see how the motor mount brackets will get welded in (I have sections of cut frames from a CQ with the proper brackets).

Rare how clean that 12v is, and then ironic that it's getting pulled for a swap.

THAT is a very cool detail I didn't even know existed! Good work, new garage looks like it makes it especially enjoyable.

I got the AAN in place today to see how the motor mounts would work. On page one of this thread alxdgr8 and Mcstiff were talking about whether the stock B4 mounts would work. They damn near do!

Heres some pics:

Image

Heres the passenger's side:
Image
Image
Image
Image
It is REALLY close. I am going to make some 12mm spacers and longer bolts - M10x1.5x130MM would work. That will push the mount out from the frame enough to hit the bracket dead center.

Then the drivers side was pretty far off with the C4 brackets on:

Image
Image

So I put on a CQ 7A mount and its way closer:
Image
Image
I think I should be able to modify the 7a arm and make it work. Reinforce it and widen the window for the bolt.

I need to put the downpipe and turbo etc. all on there and make sure the arms aren't interfering with anything before I commit but this is a good development.

I do realize that this will make the radiator mounting more difficult but I will deal with that as I get there.

Not too sure yet. I want to keep AC and I want to keep a stock radiator location. I think the only way to do that is to go V belts but I'm still working on that one

I'm thinking leave the compressor where it is on the AAN, use the V6 radiator,a/c condenser, & make custom a/c lines. The front engine snubber mount will be close to the fans & radiator. The fans will most likely need to be relocated. My 0.2 cents.

I've got a 7a fan and radiator as well as the v6 stuff. I'll see how it all goes together. AC is a must eventually. I want this thing as stock seeming and comfy as possible

Wow that is close! Seems like ze Germans are trolling us!!

I'd take a look at ScubaDave's CQ for front mount rad ideas: http://theprojectpad.org/viewtopic.php? ... 3db7b4e6d0

Ben's 95 90 Quattro 20vT - motor mount fitting

Post by Afterthought »

ooooh that turbo. Nice.

on the front clearance, the serpentine will give you more room overall due to serp. crank pulley being shorter.

The V-belt pulley sticks out farther. so it robs space down below.
HOWEVER If you were to modify brackets and locate all of your accessories down low, and do V-belts you'd have more space up top because there is nothing but the timing belt. This is what I did in my URQ to fit a front mount in it.
This should kind of illustrate . This red line is where my power steering pulley is. Above the red line I have the most possible space but below it I have very little space . It works good with the forward intake and core support that I can’t remove but if I had a removable core support or a B3/B4 I’d do serpentine . I just did this so I didn’t have to cut the car .

This is all helpful - thanks Gentlemen!

Here's a view with the S2 cross pipe installed. Not a whole heck of a lot of room for a front radiator:

Is there a reason you want to avoid the side radiator ?

In my 4000 with a front mount it was using a B2 4000 fwd rad I’m pretty sure (came that way , sweet setup)

I'm not necessarily avoiding either front mount or side mount - I just want to get AC and I haven't seen any small chassis cars with a five cyinder, AC and a front mount radiator. I'm open to anything.

Either way, It's time for me to tackle the wiring and put these decisions on the back burner for a bit.

Hoping to pull the dash and harness this weekend and start integrating the AAN harness to the B4

I mated an ABZ harness to run VEMS on my old Coupe Quattro so I should be okay.

More progress the last couple days

Got the dash out over the weekend and yesterday finally got the Airbox out too.

I continue to be shocked at how clean this car is. The airbox foam is even still good.

Next is to pull the harness and mark what is removed from the car that is not engine related. Then work that all back to the AAN harness and wire the end to the VEMS Econoseal connector

Meanwhile, some KILLER stuff at the local Concours show here in Cincinnati this weekend:
