COP equivalent connector?
COP equivalent connector?
Okay I know this is a long shot but I'm going to ask anyway. Does anyone know if (/where/how) I can get a connector equivalent to the ones on the pencil coil-on-plug units many of us are using?
To clarify: I'm not looking for the mating connector for the coil, I'm looking for a male connector like the one on the coil, that can plug into the car's harness.
What I'm trying to do is make a harness I can plug between the coil and its connector, so I can connect a modified timing light that will be driven directly off the coil's trigger signal.
Thanks!

Re: COP equivalent connector?
You may have to sacrifice a coil to get one.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Does anyone here have an old/bad/unwanted coil they'd be willing to let go cheap?

I have a bunch you could have for the cost of shipping.elaw wrote:Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Does anyone here have an old/bad/unwanted coil they'd be willing to let go cheap?

Sold!
PM me with the amount and I can paypal you the fundage.
I don't know how big your stash is but if you want to keep some for spares technically I only need one. OTOH I'd love to have some spares myself so whatever you have that's surplus I'll take.

I remember you were collecting them every junk yard run you did haha. But that was when you were in MD

Re: COP equivalent connector?
Cool... it's much appreciated!
I remember back in the early '90's visiting a VW dealer that had quite a substantial pile of dead g-laders out back. I wonder if these days they have similarly large piles of dead/superseded ignition coils?

Re: COP equivalent connector?
thats microtimer. wrong size pins and housing. the coils take junior power timer, the larger size contacts. I'm not aware of a male version of that, doesn't mean of course that it doesn't exist.

Re: COP equivalent connector?
I modified an old spark plug wire to accomplish the same thing. I smushed the coil side of the wire down a little so it wedged into the where the plug normally sits in the 2.0t coil. Then plugged the other end to a grounded plug if the wire is not the right type to fit into the head. The car may run a cyl down, but it can still zero timing.

helps if I read up at what he was trying to do. yeah, if this is to set your base timing just ram an old shitty cut off spark plug wire into the end of the coil. as far as being down a cylinder, no need. just connect it to the plug wire in the cylinder and flash your light off the wire.

Re: COP equivalent connector?
Yeah I've done that in the past but I've always had a hard time getting my timing light to trigger on my setup... I can't say for sure but my theory is that the per-plug coils have a very short output pulse that's easily missed by the timing light.
So when I was at a swap meet a couple of weeks ago and scored a very basic (but inductive pickup) timing light for 5 bucks I figured I'd convert it to fire from the trigger signal going to the coil. Electrically it's a very simple thing to do, the only real challenge is the connectors.
Besides, if I was into doing things the easy way, I wouldn't be driving this car...

Re: COP equivalent connector?
if you are having a hard time getting the light to trigger, take a razor blade and shave down the insulation on the wire near where you are clamping your inductive pickup.
