I don't think it is worth the effort if you already have a 20vt car and aren't going to utilize the weight and weight distribution advantages in a meaningful way. So the det ceiling is higher... how much? Is that worth it? I'm really asking here because I don't know for sure so don't go getting offended, you 07k guys :)

Maybe here viewtopic.php?f=15&t=244

I have an 07k, ur20VT, or the existing 12v to build for the 90 but have yet to fully commit to one option (if you want reasons I'll go to my thread).

you do something like modify an old, obsolete audi because you love it, not because it makes sense. If someone wants to go 07k, have at it! No justification needed beyond "because I want to" as far as I'm concerned.

-mk4 tdi wagon with some mods

Oh, I'm not looking for justification. I just don't know why someone with a perfectly good 488 whp ur20vt would want to go 07k unless there were some very specific reasons behind it which I am curious to know about. Jim's car has good reason for it, I'm definitely not questioning that.

Like Dana said, applying logic to anything with these cars is pointless ;)

Half the fun for me was designing my perfect engine bay. The packaging of the 07K definitely makes that easier.

Haha, that's a perfectly acceptable reason! It'd be interesting to know who has done it and for what reasons now that there are several running around.

07K Advantages, most important first for me at least. Anyone remember the first 20v they worked on after dicking with 20vt motors? This is like that feeling but compared to the 20v. The 15 year newer tech is pretty awesome.
-VVT
-Roller rockers enable the stock head to flow to levels of ported 034 heads
-Breather system
-Weight
-Length
-Displacement
-Only needs ~E45 to make the most power which saves on injectors and fuel pumps
-Built in vacuum pump
-TTRS factory fluidamper type front pulley
-No gaskets - this is nice if you get it all right the first time 8-)
-Built in 60-2 Trigger
-Lots of Lamborghini part numbers ;)

Disadvantages/must have custom parts that you have to build or have built by a small number of people that know how.
-Starter
-Oil Pan
-Mounts
-Factory Side mount radiator probably will not work
-Custom Manifolds

I'd be lying if I said the 07K wasn't tempting... If you already have a 5 cylinder variant it's more a question of when, not if, isn't it?

I'd chime in on install in a C4 but I can't yet. Need the engine first!

70-90mph in 6th gear. The middle readout on the combo gauge is boost psi. This is an 800hp turbo mind you :)

Im looking at my dyno of my 20vt with an hy35 (a little more than half the capacity of this turbo, mabye?) while going frame by frame of this video and I'm seeing almost the same exact spool. Amazing.

Jim Green's 90q 20vt - 600whp 07k build

Post by audifreakjim »

Hank sent me some IE valve springs, new stem seals and a TTRS intake cam. I am right on the cusp of the efficiency island of this turbo, the goal is 30 psi on pump and 33 on e50. Should get me to 600 wheel and happy:)

Nah, mainly because that would have triggered more spending on valves and such that aren't in the budget right now. I am really happy with the way the water injection is working so I'll see how far we can take that with pump gas.

Been playing with cam timing and chasing down a strange boost control issue. Here is a sound clip when I had the spool valve and the dump valve forced open to try and track things down. Also at 10 degrees of exhaust cam retard so it sounds meaty :) Crappy iphone audi, I just ordered an external MIC. This should be at least a temporary fix for those I5 turbo addicts who like to make turbo noises int he shower.

IF that's all it takes for you to rip through about 4k rpm, I picked the wrong turbo lol

No kidding... It sounds like there's no lag at all after shifting. I remember that distinctly with the 30r in the 4k... Waiting for the turbo to come back to life.

And that's without the spool valve and vvt. I am learning how to best control this internal wastegate. It's better to run it essentially unplumbed, or high duty cycle. To get your max boost. I was doing the opposite and using a really stiff spring with very little wastegate duty cycle. This was causing really strange and inconsistent boost control.

07k is in the house!! This thing is finally running like I thought it should. Retarding the exhaust cam makes a huge difference. Pulls like mad and the spool is insane. I need to detune it to keep it out of surge :) Here is a third gear pull up a hill. It will hit the rollers next week at IMS and the boost will go as high as the turbo allows :)Image
