Type 44 big brake ideas? (Rear)
Type 44 big brake ideas? (Rear)
I'm going to be doing a brake upgrade in the rear and wanted to know if anyone had any good ideas that don't cost a ton of money. I wanted to utilize a caliper that has the e-brake provision, maybe something from a 20v 200, S4, or similar. Then try to run a large rotor. I don't want some huge caliper in the back so I can try to keep the volume displacement of the caliper bore somewhat close to factory. The factory rear calipers seem to be lower profile and don't protrude outward toward the wheel as much as a huge dual piston caliper. I know I will have to machine or buy an adapter and get a rotor where the top hat or offset keeps the rotor inboard as much as possible.
Re: Type 44 big brake ideas? (Rear)
Search for what nick did with his cars. Stock 20v caliper with bigger rotors.

Re: Type 44 big brake ideas? (Rear)
The bigger vented rotor is all you really need on these cars and the S-cars IMO. The "customer" car I posted about earlier has bigger rear rotors with some custom (perhaps BIRA) bracket and you can lock the rears under hard braking. 996 monoblocks on A8 323mm rotors up front. I don't know specifics on the rears but I know dad had a set of the brackets made for his car as well because holy shit stopping power. The rotors are readily available though.

he's looking to keep stock eBrake provisions & not a huge 4 piston setup...

I think I might have a combination I will try. It will be a 2010 S4 rotor (330mm x22mm). I will get 1990-94 V8 calipers and make my own adapters. The rotors come in tomorrow and I just need to test fit them to make sure the calipers once mounted on the rotor doesn't rub the inside of the wheel. The rotors are $38.00 so it's a cheap and readily available replacement rotor at the local parts stores. If it works, it will be a super cheap big brake upgrade.

This is just what I was wondering. subscribed!
Re: Type 44 big brake ideas? (Rear)
Here is what I did... 330x22mm rotors. Factory 200 20V/ V8 rear calipers and making the adapter plates.
Rotors are $42.00

I now realize that was a stupid question, but I wasn't sure if the stock caliper for the non vented rotor would work with a vented rotor, and from those angles they didn't look vented.

Wow that's a lot of rotor, well done! At that point I doubt it would matter vented or not, that's a lot of surface area to dissipate relatively not that much heat. I mean I'm sure there would be a difference technically but with a good set of pads I bet you would never notice. I've been following along, well done on all fronts

So do they differ from UrS calipers?

When doing the parts search, S4 calipers were showing to be the same as the rear 20v 200 and 90-94 V8 but it needs to be confirmed.

Ob if you want to do something similar for Rubi, dad just had a set of brackets made up and can tell you which rotor to get. I'm sure he can have a set of brackets made for you.

Re: Type 44 big brake ideas? (Rear)
I circled the rotor that worked best. I got them from Orielys. I tried several models of the 330mm but most were having the wrong offset and would only allow to make too thin of an adapter plate for the caliper The model works pretty good and allows the bracket to be just under 1/2" thick.

Would be cool, but these disc seem to be cheaper in the replacement department... I already have some custom brackets for 310x22 for Phaeton & D3 A8 Discs keeping our UrS caliper... I haven't used them yet...

I need to do my rear brakes. If these brackets allow the stock calipers to fit under stock 16" Fuchs UrS4 wheels, I'll take a set.

Re: Type 44 big brake ideas? (Rear)
I am in the process of getting several sets made. I will start off making 5 sets only unless more interest is generated. The machine shop doesn't want to mess with anything less. I have dropped off my template, knuckle/hub, rotor, caliper and carrier bracket for them to get started. 17" wheels or larger are required. 1mm on each side of a new 22mm thick rotor will need to be turned down to 20mm at local parts store or machine shop. The new required rotor is roughly $40 each. I paid $42 each. This set up/top hat offset allows for a decent size/thick plate for strength (roughly 7/16" thick. It is a flat, single piece, dog bone shape. The 330mm rotor kicks the caliper carrier bracket out far enough where the bolt has plenty of clearance to get a socket on it to tighten it already assembled. I should be able to sell these for $100/shipped for the pair, throw in $85 to buy your own rotors, and about $20 to turn your rotors 1mm on each side and you have got one bad ass HUGE rear brake upgrade utilizing your factory caliper and keeping the parking brake. You also don't have to worry about your brake master cylinder trying fill large volume calipers not matching the brake system. You are gainingthe leverage point and adding more rotor to soak up/dissipate heat. So roughly $205.00, you can get a massive upgrade on the cheap. You can buy better rotors stepping up to slotted/drilled/two piece/etc if you want to spend the extra money.
Here are the applications that I have verified so far... Basically, the S6/S4/V8/200 20v/Avant/5000 share the same rear caliper and carrier brackets. Feel free to add info... Reply if you want a set and help me get a couple of sets spoken for so I don't have to eat the cost of making 5 sets when I only need one.

Re: Type 44 big brake ideas? (Rear)
I was able to use a 22mm thick rotor and stock rear UrS4 calipers using B5S4 rear carriers as they were the same dimensionally except designed for the thicker rotor. I went a different route that I am happy with but this looks like a great solution for a cheap RBBK. Good work
