Spec Stage 3+ clutch slipping

Post by Mentosman42 »

So, I finally got my URQ back on the road with the AAN. The engine is only running a stage1+ chip currently with the stock K24 and I have a spec stage 3+ in the 016 with ~300 miles on it. I know all about the chatter with the stage 3+ clutch and it is starting to go away but the clutch just doesnt seem to be holding. In first and second gear I can feel the clutch slipping, I have yet to launch the car at all but I have thrown WOT at it in 3rd and 4th gear.

My question is, will the grip get better in 1st and 2nd gear as it breaks in or should it be able to hold the torque this engine is making out of the box no problem?

I personally think it should be able to hold, eben before break in. They do improve with more break in, but I used wot from basically the get go with my southbend stage 3 in the avant. I didn't want to do it a whole lot, but had to to get up the mountains where I picked it up in CO. It held it just fine in the big, heavy 200 avant with 016 too of course.

Give it a few hundred more and if it's still slipping... Well then you've definitely got an issue.

Thats kinda the feeling im getting. The clutch is rated for over 500 ft-lbs and Im probably making just under 300. Would think it has plenty of grip straight out of the box.

The chatter in forward gears is getting much better but reverse is still a bitch. Feels like im going to lose the rear diff.

I love the pedal feel and engagement of the stage 3+ but if the reverse situation/slipping doesnt improve Im going to have to take it out and ship it back to them.

What made you get a spec in the first place if you don't mind me asking?

Had a lot of input from local guys that swear by spec and I read good things about the stage 3+ for grip/driveability.

Ok just wondering. Spec doesn't seem to do so hot in audis for some reason. I hear about problems with then often. Domestic guys seem to like them though.

Anyway, was the flywheel resurfaced? Any chance the rear main seal is leaking?

The reverse problem is interesting, the clutch doesn't do anything different between forward and reverse. How healthy are all of your mounts? You might have some slop that is exaggerating the problem in reverse.

i had the same problem except i was making more power. once the boost went over 23 psi and about 4000 rpm the clutch would slip. i have changed my clutch to stage 4+ by south bent with 6 puk sprung disc and now there is no problem. Also i would check clutch line and the master and slave cylinder if any of them getting stuck will make you clutch not fully disengaged.

The flywheel was resurfaced and I'm sure the rear main isn't leaking because I've had the trans back out of the car. As for the diff/trans mounts, they are all new 034 mounts. Solid aluminum subframe, poly rear diff, and new trans/diff mounts for both.

Gonna give it another 500 miles and double check the clutch linkage/lines.

This guys says the exact same thing about reverse! Never mentions slipping though. I actually have this same disc in my 07k build so I'll be pounding on it soon!
