MSD ignition spark plug wires

Post by morris400 »

im currently running 034 HO coil kit (7mm wires) but have noticed the spark plug wires are coming loose and the wire has come out of the spark plug boot on 3/5 boots causing issues with misfires and shitty fuel economy. i was wondering if swaping to the MSD wires (8.5mm) would be an upgrade? i can get them local at a good price compared to Magnecor wires. does anyone have experince with MSD on their 20vt?

are the Magnecor wires that much better then MSD? or are they the same quality?

Thank guys.

When you made your set, what coils were you using ? I've heard the msd boots don't fit the 7a valve cover I'm using so I would have to use the 034 boots.

034 how coils and AAN cam cover. Msd straight boots were too short to pull out easily but worked.

I used their straight boots. Magnecore sells their boots individually.

Do you by chance have link for the magnecor boots ? I'm gonna get the rest local but the long boots are a nightmare to find local lol

You used there grey stright boots? And you said it was not easy to remove but possible? Cause I think I'm gonna have to go that route with msd boots.

Yes I used the straight grey ones. You have to pull the wire to remove it (boot is too short to reach) and sometimes the terminal tears off the wire and stays on the spark plug. Keep extra terminals around and leave length in the wires for future repairs.

Went and bought the MSD universal kit today. Damn it comes with a lot of wire...each wire is close to 3ft long and I've got 8 of them lol. The kit also came with 16 different coil boots and connectors.

Quality is much better then that of 034. I uses the straight boots that came in the kit. They fit pretty good but yes not ideal. As soon as I get the right connectors I will make another set using the beru boots.

I will post a better pic tomorrow.

I just tested all my 034 plug wires, they all tested 0.00-0.01 ohm on 2k setting. The MSD ones tested as per .40-.50 ohm per foot.

I thought 0 ohm was better? Or is there a problem when all 5 test 0 ohm?

it just means its a different kind of wire.

most of the 034 kits the wire is copper and the ends provide the resistance. mosst msd kits the wire is spiral wound and the ends have zero resistance. they both provide a resistance along the length of the wire, they just do it in a different way.

That's weird cause I tested the 034 wires with and without ends and got 0 ohms every time. With msd I got the same with and without the ends ( 40-50)

None the less she's running better now and idles better. For 100 bucks I can't complain. And I got 3 extra wires cause I don't have a hemi lol
