Hanks URQ 2.6L Autopsy
Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Tall deck
did you find a transport for all your parts? I may be able to bring the recaro's if still needed. I dont think I have room for the trans.
Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Tall deck
Dave, come grab the Recaros. I'm hauling the transmission down.

Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Tall deck
Yeah, DQT TDI transmission is going in with the flexible main shaft, 4:1 rear diff and some fresh fluid. That last 5 speed(narrow at that) was one of the best used boxes I have used yet. Super smooth shifting and quiet. It just needs a new front seal and i'll likely put it through the Recycling program for another day.

I figured so, with the list you had for sale may as well have one in your car...

If Dave or someone could bring my Recaros I would be much appreciative! Thanks

That's the problem on this end........I'm not sure they will fit in my garage. :(

So what is the best tranny solution for high hp audis like Hanks? What part of the tranny seems to fail the most.

Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Tall deck
01E is the strongest. They have issues with the 2nd gear shift collar locking up from number of reasons. Mostly from shifting into second gear to quickly and an OEM syncro that was not aggressive enough. The rebuild kits with a new collar and new syncro are a good idea for any stock transmission even if it shifts perfectly when you put it in.
Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Tall deck
The TDI one Hank mentioned above is supposedly the best.

Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Tall deck
I have a DQT in mine for over a year now, no issues whatsoever.. nice highway cruising as well!!
I probably don't beat on it as hard as Hank does.
The only better 01E units are the oil cooler pump equipped, in TDIs they were 3.89 and rest (like W8 or S8 etc) 4.11

TJ: Hank,Do you know what is the max torque the stock AAN bottom end could hold for GT2871 with E85?
I'm running 22psi of boost and going to give it 30Psi til 7200RPM.Am i going to max out the 2871?
Thanks,
pop

Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Tall deck
I highly doubt you'll be able to run 30psi out of a 2871 to redline. That's 30R levels of flow, if not 35R.

Hey Sam,
one the 034's page,it said it could be able to run over 28psi efficiently.i remember someone said it's going to run out of steam after 8K RPM.Not sure what's the maximum torque AAN bottom end could be handle though.
Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Tall deck
You can hit over 28psi in the midrange, but it won't sustain that to 7000rpm on a 2.2. Looking at the compressor map, I think all you could sustain would be 22-24ish?

2871 on my DD s4. I see 26lbs peak, but it dies off hard in the top end especially in higher gears (19-20psi). Top end might work a bit better with some 7a cams, haven't tried em.

It depends on what your using the car for. The tdi transmission with the flexible main shafts save the first gear but have been known to shear off with very high horsepower and hard racing conditions. The regular main shafts have been known to gall first gear with similar abuse.
The 1-2 collars are problematic, mostly due to the shifter design of the C5 and B5 cars, as 1-2 collar problems are almost non existent in C4 cars. There are updated pieces which fix this issue, but you won't find a factory transmission with those pieces installed.
The later tdi transmissions (2003 and up) had a pump, standard capacity sump but the first and second gears are even shorter than the standard 01E (3.75/2.14).
Since the terms better and best are entirely subjective here are three scenarios taking into account engine and car use.
The "Best" transmission utilizing factory parts would look like this for a low displacement street car would be:
Allroad TDI high capacity sump with pump
4.11 final drive
3.50/1.89 first/second
1.32/.93 3rd/4th -- There is also a 1.43/1.07 but 4-5th spacing would be pretty wide.
.73 5th
.60 6th
Updated 1-2 shift collar parts
The "Best" transmission utilizing factory parts would look like this for a large displacment engine
Allroad TDI high capacity sump with pump
3.89 final drive
3.50/1.89 first/second
1.23/.87 3rd/4th
.68 5th
.56 6th
Updated 1-2 shift collar parts
The "Best" transmission utilizing factory parts would look like this for a track only car
Allroad TDI high capacity sump with pump
4.35 final drive
3.50/1.89 first/second
1.43/1.07 3rd/4th
.86 5th
.76 6th
Updated 1-2 shift collar parts
However there are power limitations to the stock internals, at about 600 wheel hp in a racing environment I've seen, 3rd gears shear and first gear loose teeth with drag racing.

I hear the dyno didn't happen this year :(
Re: Hanks URQ 2.6L Tall deck
Dyno didn't happen but tuning did and there should be some good burnout videos appearing in this thread soon. Hoonage did happen.
