Read his half shaft build write up and it will specify. It was far more exotic than redline. But it will be hard to try and keep up the current level of insanity, redline should be fine ;)

Each matched pair of CV's also come with a 14.4 oz tube of Redline CV-2 red moly grease for packing the CV's. Redline claims this will extend the life of CV's by 2-8 times on their site. I dunno if thats true but it's all I use and I wouldn't pawn anything less off on anyone running these.

I do vaguely remember talk of a more expensive option in a post but I'll go with RL under the assumption that a boot will fail before the service life of the grease (remember the front angles are higher from the setback of the engine and trans).

Found an interesting thread for a 90 with an auto but otherwise all the mods my 90 has before the heads (SXTB, RS3 MAF, HVRS with my own Samco silicone hose kit and a ported and polished intake manifold). Interesting to see and consider how the head work, and not having a slush box, would impact WHP (yes I plan on getting on the dyno soon).

Trailed a co-worker with an M roadster, not sure if <2001 (240hp) or '01-02 (315hp) but likely <2001, on the way home today. Not many gaps in traffic to play but on the few straights we had it was not a blow out :D This was by chance, we both ended up on the same feeder roads at the same time, so I'll have to catch up with him and shoot the S.

Not enough room to play to call it anything but a split decision. Assuming it is the early engine, I'd think that a drag would be close but I'd hope my brakes and suspension could give me an advantage on a "road course".

The more I dig, the more modified the car becomes...http://forums.quattroworld.com/9080/msgs/8248.phtml

Definitely slower than a C5 (vette) in a straight line; I knew that was comming :-)

As a fan of the 12v, I must say that I always wanted to do just a few of the Mance mods (head/IM/TB) when I had my 12v.
I still miss it.

PLEASE don't swap the 12v for a 07K. This car is so special. If you have to go 07K, get another 90Q. I beg you.
Did I understand correctly that Mance dropped 60k on this car?

Let's not forget that the man himself had considered an LS2 swap until he decided it would require a $4k dry sump to clear the B4 subframe (I'm not sure where he was planning on hiding ~10" of length!). For me, I know that more power at some point is a requirement. Now that we are 10 yrs advanced, I am not sure if building a high compression bottom end for the 12v is the best answer. Aside from the architecture of engine, the bigger decision is to force induction or not. I know how Mance felt on the topic for the track but I have more research to do.

Just to highlight the point:
VAP Wrote:
This power plant brings a lot of appeal to the table. Its cost is under $6k brand new and fully assembled with EVERYTHING you see in this pic except A/C. My 90 tells me it likes the red engine covers and would feel at home having them tucked in its little engine compartment. I could probably do this swap in a week as this engine is so much smaller than the 12V and it weighs 28lbs less with everything on it than the 12V does stripped! Oil pan would be the "bear project" as its structural with the aluminum block. But although unlikely it may fit right out of the crate. I've got an appointement with a Chevy dealer to look at one up on a rack and take some measurements next week. Width and Length of the engine are altogether doable but I still havent measured block height and will do so at next weeks appointment. Motor mounts are a cake-walk and very close to stock 12V location tho configuration would change slightly from either engines mounts. If I do this Haltech will handle engine management so HP will increase over 405 factory number. Emissions will be cleaner than ANY 300HP 12V and Colorado Clean Air has provisions and waivers for such an event as swapped motors. They make it a pain but apparently some "stick-to-it-tiveness" pays huge dividends and subsequent bi-annual emissions testing becomes a "ho-hum/yawn" affair.

Well, I met Mance at Coffee & Cars today! Only got the chance to talk briefly but the topic of the 90 needing more power did come up :D The problem is that he's liquidated all of his old 12v / Audi stuff (not to comment on any stock he's maintaining for lifetime warranty issues) so I'm not sure that I'm going to adopt the project of building a 300whp 12v (I do know of a few World Challenge engines for sale) from scratch. Unfortunately, we only chatted briefly as my kids were demanding my attention, a trip to the facilities, and Hot Cocoa, so we didn't really get into too much detail.

Anyway, not really much of an update, just the scales tipping ;)

I'll drag a 016 to the shop from my father's place and see what I think about it bolting up to 07k.

Vems plus supercharger would be easy. We just made 195whp on pump 91 with a tall deck 2.5L ur20v NA with an exotic head. 07k NA with an intake is right at 200whp even with 9:1 compression.

Choices. ...

I'd be interesting to know about the 016!

The Stasis World Challenge 12v engines, built by Rebello Racing, were rumored to be 300 hp (though the 2004 Tuner Challenge dyno says 200whp . I think my 12v is between 150 and 200 :D I'd love to get an extra 1000rpm and some more aggressive timing into it!

As things stand today, the 90s going to have this engine until I sell the CQ or when my twins start Kindergarten next fall!

300hp might work on a road course in spec class, but as a road car, 300hp (claimed) is just anemic when Toyota Camry's make that these days. My wife in her VQ35 Infiniti G35 would probably roast Laura with 2 kids in the back on the way to soccer practice, even if I were to take the 50 pounds of dogfood out of the trunk she keeps nagging me about.

Getting hp out of small displacement NA is a painful, unrewarding, money draining task that leaves every road car instance I have ever seen saying "I should have forced inducted a stock motor"

Ouch! Sadly, I'm not sure I'll make BBQ this year :hide: The wife basically works every saturday (schedule generated every 3 weeks) and we are fairly short on family in CO (I'm from PA, she's from CA) so unless i haul 3 girls out with me chances are slim.

I know Mance had it on the dyno but never posted any results; whatever it has works well, considering the curb weight is around 3k (he claimed less with the CF hood and lightened SSR Comps). It's also easy to beat people who don't know you are racing.

:shame: I know. I've not given up, just not going to be devastated if it can't work (I may have a midterm in there too). Ideally I'd leave from work to SLC Thursday and hang with my oldest friend from PA who just moved to SLC then caravan down with the SLC faction Friday :idunno:

I always wondered what happened to this car! lol your wife in the video had that look that my wife would get taking out the old s4. I kid you not I caught her pulling into the neighborhood sideways with the throttle pinned on two separate occasions. NIce find!

:edit: better 2nd pull...

Well I had the idea to vid a FATS time since I was out in a part of town where it was possible without traffic on a straight, fairly level, road. Of course I was out looking up what this was in a parking lot and my phone was being so slow the most info I could get was 3rd 4200-6500. Now that I am home I can see that this is problematic for the 90 for a few reasons:

1. I rolled up to ~4k then floored it, should have floored it around 2k pull 2 was from about 2k; only slightly better
2. I hit a brick wall ign cut at about 6350 so I lifted at ~6200 (I knew this going in) pull 2, I lifted after the limiter
3. My 3rd is, my best guess as an 016 with a locker and 4.11 final drive, 1.458 vs the B5S4's 1.231 so I don't really have the same gear as a B5S4 (my 4th is ~1.071) pull 2, SOS
4. I have a bulb out around 9 o'clock so you cannot really see speed; 4000 is about 45 mph in 3rd pull 2, daylight
:hammer:
Anyway, 3rd gear not a FATs, pull at ~5280':

4200-6200 ~6.5 secs?
Sounds like a stock 3b S2 with an ABY 01E, 1.32:1 3rd, does about 6.1

The B6 S4's 3rd is 1.46:1 but a 3.89 final drive...

Day Dreaming 'bout Front Struts

Post by Mcstiff »

Somehow I blew a Bilstein about a week ago when it was <20ºF  So I'm going to replace it, pretty sure it's just stock urS valveing, but it also get's my mind wondering about Ohlins...

Image
Image
Looks familiar ;-)

So I wonder how close the spindle for an EVO really is...

Obviously the steering are would need to be sorted out.

I wonder if the arms could be adjustable and live below the springs, I'd likely never use the last ~20mm of of the range...

Image

I may feel better about selling my CQ if it justifies front Ohlins and the start of an 07k 8-)
