URS6 avant rear end sag

Post by vwnut8392 »

i've been looking at the URS6 avant i just picked up for my new daily and i noticed it seems to sag in the rear. the car has H&R springs and bilsten sport's. i've seen pics of a couple other cars with the same look to them. is this just an optical illusion because of the arch size difference or is the car really sagging in the rear? i'd like to correct it and get the front down more level with rear if its possible without buying coilovers.

You are experiencing the classic optical illusion (Judging from your picture your heigh is exactly level)- If you want to know for sure do this:

Get a big level (or phone) find a level piece of ground to park the car- take big piece of string and attach to a similar point on front and back wheels. Put the level on the string.

Or you can take a side picture and in paint try to draw a straight line from the tops of the tires.

Same, a lot of people just hacksaw off half or 1 entire coil in the front spring…. Makes it look good but that high front end lets you boogie around the corners easily!

The ass-end sag is common on UrS6 avants with H&R's. Eibach made an avant-specific spring set for this reason, but H&R does not.

The solution is a spacer (10-20mm tall) that goes between the snap ring and the spring perch on the Bilstein. ECS used to make them but not anymore. Just a few mins on a lathe will do the trick though.

You could also machine a series of grooves in the bilstein so that the snap ring is adjustable.

Thanks ED! i dont feel comfortable with having a cut spring on the car even though i would like to bring the front down to match the rear as i like the gap in the rear of the car so i'll have to have my brother whip me up some spacers at the machine shop.

No problem. Note the importance of the recessed seat for the snap ring to sit on (1st photo). This prevents it from opening/moving. Normally the spring perch would do the same thing.

An idea just dawned on me, what if i would remove the front spring perch, drop it down and weld it back on to compensate for the difference in the rear? i would rather lower the front than raise the rear honestly.

that is what I would do. I've done that before to get a car level. Worked ok, I only had to go about .75"

Thanks for the input. I didn't want to just start cutting up my spare strut housings just to wind up being disappointed.

My Avant also had a saggy butt , bought a set of spacers from Edigreg to put under the lower perch and above the cir clip on the rear Bilstein sports. bonus is that the Stromung isn't bottoming out anymore and the Thule 4 bike trailer hitch carrier has plenty of clearance.

Yeah that would work. It's a lot of work just to lower the front 10-20mm though. The rear suspension is much easier to take apart, plus no cutting/grinding/welding required

No, I don't sell spacers. ECS used to, and some other companies before that. I'm not aware of anyone selling them now.

I posted a picture above
