Jakes '91 200 Avant

Post by Midnight »

Ive been lurking on the classic Audi forums for awhile now. I finally joined the club on monday when a slightly annoyed trucker informed me that the Midnight Blue 200 20v Avant on his trailer would need to be jump started. The 200 has 247k miles on it and a list of things to be addressed. The car runs and drives perfectly well, but as is the Audi way, all the little things are broken. I will post pics soon.

Thanks for the welcome. Sorry but no pics tonight, had to work late so its dark and snowing outside. :hide: As for plans, I'm thinkin custom coil overs, HP2 or Porsche brakes, rods, HX35, Vems, head work, and probably an 01E. But first it needs a timing belt, new rear window regulators, the purple window tint film removed, the aftermarket stereo sorted out, and I'm sure a few other things.

Finally got a chance to take some pics today. I also found the original window sticker in the manual booklet.

Yep, the PO said it was midnight blue. The sticker says Indigo Mica with Platinum interior. The car could use to be re sprayed though, the clear coat is pealing on the right D pillar and there is bare metal behind both front wheels.

Took the 200 out to play in the snow today. I'm still getting used to having to row my own gears, but It defiantly feels more macho then my A6. It caught me a little of guard how many looks it gets, which is fine, right up till I stall it.

Small update. Repaired a vac leak in the line to the BPV, and wow what a difference. The car runs way better, gets full boost now, and its much quieter. I'm starting to understand why you guys like these cars so much. BUT, now its idling rough, any ideas why? ISV?

It surges a little bit between ~850 and just under 1krpm. When the car is warm it should idle at just under 1k correct?

I believe normal is 800-1000 on the 5-cylinders. If its surging, it sounds like a vacuum leak to be honest. Do you know what kind of vacuum you are pulling? I assume the engine is stock?

As far as I know the engine is stock, the reason I ask is because before I replaced the line it idled dead smooth. I will hook up the vac tester tomorrow if the snow holds off.

take out all lug bolts but 3 and put them in hand tight - literally hand tight. drive the car around the block jack it up and the wheels should have popped off as long as you didn't tighten the lugs down. No reason to stand under it kicking all day.

Very nice. Funny you ask that I was just pestering a member on here loxxrider about this a couple days ago.

Here is a very thorough explanation below!

I haven't done the calculations to translate into different wheel widths, etc. but you should easily be able to fit 9 up front with the right offset. I had 8.5s at about et26 I believe and they had lots of room to go outward. 9.5s should fit, but it'd be a matter of offset. I can tell you that BBS style 5's from a BMW poked a bit. They were 8" wide, but ET20 *plus* a 20mm adapter, so et0. I think at ET10 (final) they would have fit great. That should give you an idea of what you can fit up front (you just have to do some math).

In the back, I fit the 10" wide wheels with 255's on them. They were right on the ragged edge on the outside, but on the inside they could have gone in at least another .5" This all depends on the size of tire you're using of course. I can only give you a general idea of the size of wheel you can fit. I think it is best to start with a wheel with fairly high offset, then space out as needed if you are trying to make something extreme fit. It is much easier to do that than to "remove offset" from the wheel obviously. With +45 wheels, you should be able to play around with spacers to get where you need to go. I'd say you can fit 275s out back. In the front, you might be limited to 265s. Coilovers will be necessary to maximize tire clearance. Luckily these cars don't need the fenders rolled! That is one big plus.
