You need atleast 2 weeks of bug working out in order to have good peace of mind on a 1000 mile road trip.

Nonsense. Just ask Nate E. and Marc S. about their drive to UrQ25.

Hank, leave the car in bare-metal color, just clearcoat it.

After looking at my tracking number for my paint and realizing it is 60lbs worth of supplies, it does make me want to!!! hehehe

Thanks Craig. It's cars like yours that truly made me do it. It wont be on that sortof scale, but it will atleast have a good paint job that is deserving of the car. It does get me excited about shortening the Coupe GT and welding in a rear suspension though!! My donor is a Cali car and with original paint. It should be a peach to stip!

Oh listen to you...worrying about weight. Isn't that why you have a big turbo on there?!? Please....keep the car porky, it might be my only chance of running circles around you at Miller one day, hehe.

In true escalation style, I was up till 4am last night taking the sound deadening off the inside of the car with the carpets pulled up. My car is a grey market car, so it has to undergo DOT inspection to get in. One of the things they did was put in these HUGE door beams inside the door. They must weigh 25 lbs on both sides of the car.

Europeans deemed them not needed.. What does the motorgeek crowd say? :)

Power to weight baby.. My last weight was around 2700 wet. I feel the paint strip will take off a realistic 30 pounds or so, the deadener about 10, the headliner to suede instead of that awful pleather crap is probably good for 5 pounds if you include the insulation that was removed on top of that. All in all, I should come out even with the upcoming 01e swap adding weight.

Of course, no cage shaves a ton of weight :x A stiffer chassis would be nice, and the peace of mind. It would be nice to get a tad more weight in the rear too. Darins CQ cage is just taking up space in the shop. Maybe I should throw it in for size :)

Unfortunately, if I put a cage in the car, my wife will really be on to me :)

Well, Germans at least don't even bother with tow or ramp trucks for accidents on the Autobahns.
Typically it's a flat bed with a crane. Which says something about what's left of the vehicle post accident.

What am I getting at? You will be driving a relatively powerful car with no roll cage and relatively minimum crash protection.- can you replace the heavy bars with something lighter that will still provide some additional protection in case you get T boned? Perhaps some large diameter Aluminum tubing?

Yeah...I don't really like to sacrifice safety. Its definitely taking a risk. However, if you have a good cage, you should be good to go. Otherwise, I vote no.

after being t boned by a car traveling 50 in my daily driver(little over a month ago) i can honestly say you want the door bars in there, ill take the 50 or 100 lbs of steel in my doors over being dead anyday.

but yeah, if ur gonna cage it you need to cross the door anyway

I don't think he was talking a full cage, but rather a half cage in the back seats more for rollover protection. I think you need to stop with the escalation and get it done. I keep going out to the garage and looking at my mess thinking that there is no way I'm going to get it all back together before Oct. and I get depressed, but then to cheer myself up I come and look at your thread and start feeling mine isn't so bad.

My paint should be here tomarrow. I got a bit of work to do today so I can shoot primer tomorrow. I did shave the antenna hole in the rear quarter panel so I could keep the handle "shavedquattro". I never plan on having a stupid stereo in this car anyway.

I gotta strip a little bit of the doors, finish up the fenders, do some bodywork on the doors, and start taping up!!!!! I think the time has come to put hood pins on the car too, as I need to really get a bigger IC in there, and the hood catch gets in the way. I got some aero's that mount from the bottom, and they should be here in the morning. Thanks 034! The hood I will use is in great shape, and will be the only panel on the car not stripped to metal. Part of that is because I want to do a fiberglass hood soon. I can't swallow a 1000 dollar CF hood, but a plain fiberglass hood would really be appealing.

Hank, leave the door bars in. I have become very serious about shedding weight off the car but my door bars are still in. I only have a roll bar - if I cage it 100% one day, then those bars will go away.

All kidding aside about the weight though, 50lbs less in the car will NOT make you dramatically faster around the track, unless you are a driver who can get 100% out of the car 100% of the time. With that said, sound deadening and all else....weigh your use of the car. Unless it's going to spend 75%+ on the track, then leave it in. However, every oz adds up over time.

Get the car painted and driving again. Make that you priority.

Hank,

You can look at the stock Coupe bars from North American cars, I usually remove them and use them as pry bars when doing front suspension work (seperating ball joints etc).
They might be lighter than what is in there now.

My '85 Euro car did not have them at all.

So, any hints on the color?
BTW the rear window gasket is on his way.

Cheers

The door bars will stay till a cage. I wanted to hear the rational for why the rest of the world didnt get the bars :)

50 lbs is 50 lbs. I am still keeping leather seats, headliners, leather door cards, rear seats, carpet, a working sunroof, exc. I will keep all the anti corrosion undercoats as well. Removing weight is addicting. It is fun to look for ways to implement weight reductions.

I feel like the original STI stateside had the perfect compromise of comfort without the compromise of weight. They had speakerbox material carpets, no sound deadening, thin glass, and no radio standard. I can be more then happy with that comfort.

My whole car was DOT raped when I got it. I had a 40 pound bar in each of the bumpers, 3"x.5" pieces of steel in random locations for impact, and these door bars. They made the door bars in two pieces that slide into eachother, and then they cut a hole in the door to allow for a mig to get in there to weld the two together. They are then flanged on either side of the door. The bars are literally touching the panels, behind the windows. I'll take pictures.

My car came over in 1982 to Reno Nevada by a car collector. This may have been prior to the official plans to import. My records of hte import bill were almost 5 grand on top of a 36 thousnad dollar price tag on the car(converted currency).
