Confused about my VIN

Post by MHCAudi200t »

:hide: What up everyone?

I was looking at my vin number to make sure I ordered the right valve cover gasket and I noticed my vin number has an LN before the series number instead of the KN. Does anyone know why? Or if anyone else has a vin number like that?
Any advice or comment is always welcomed

I think it has to do with the country of final assembly but I could be wrong.

LN = L is for 1990 model year, N = Neckarsulm, Germany, the location of the manufacturing plant.

KN = 1989 model year, built at Neckarsulm.

MN = 1991 etc, NN = 1992 Model year, PN = 93, etc.

VIN number has a check digit (the 9th digit of the VIN), with an algorithm you can check the validity
http://www.audiworld.com/tech/chkdigit.doc

the 10th digit is the Manufacturing year (Position 10:Year Code)
A = 1980
B = 1981
C = 1982
D = 1983
E = 1984
F = 1985
G = 1986
H = 1987
J = 1988
K = 1989
L = 1990
M = 1991
N = 1992
P = 1993
R = 1994
S = 1995
T = 1996
V = 1997
W = 1998
X = 1999
Y = 2000
1 = 2001
2 = 2002
3 = 2003
4 = 2004
5 = 2005
6 = 2006
7 = 2007
8 = 2008
9 = 2009

11th digit, PLANT CODE:
A Ingolstadt, Germany
B Brussels, Belgium
E Emden, Germany
G Gratz, Germany
H Hannover, Germany
K Osnabrueck, Germany
M Mexico
N Neckarsulm, Germany
P Brazil
S Stuttgart, Germany
V Westmoreland, Pennsylvania
W Wolfsburg, Germany
Y Pamplona, Spain
T Gyor, Hungary
K Rheine

no I and O in the VIN
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Giant pet peeve. You do not have a Vehicle Identification Number Number. You simply have a VIN. By you, I mean everyone out there that says "VIN number". It's like saying DVD disc or CD disc, or DVR recorder.

I see what you mean. No need to add the extra number. Thanks for correcting me.

Haha Eric. I agree with you there.

I think VINs are pretty interesting once you know how to read them.
