Mark, I hadn't even thought about that reading it, but I sure have seen it rust before!

i'll check it out after a little while to see how things look and let ya know :) if i was just going to leave it open to atmosphere, i could see it rusting rather easy (the amount of moisture taken into my old breather can setup was rediculous!), but this will be closed loop, and should be pretty much oily vapor.

annnddd, a little more progress today.

i needed a support for the fuel line, and a little block with a tapped hole was the solution
Image

the trimmed fenderwell needed something on the edge of the sheetmetal, and while at the wrecking yard i found some sweet small trim from the sunroof area of a 944.
Image

the fuel lines needed construction as well. black ano. fittings and the black braided lines are teh zechsay

also had to make up the turbo oil return line

in order to consider the manifold "finished", i had to have the mounting surfaces checked, so the i took it over the machine shop, the checked it and said... "perfect!".. wow. good welding Nubz 8) after that i just needed to do a little touch up polishing with the steel wool and then clear coat it. i like how the clear makes it a little more satin finish 8)

thing is, i don't feel like i'm moving fast enough :( i am going to miss my next trip to CA to go get my fiancee (K1 fiancee Visa approved btw :D) and i won't be able to touch the car for about 5 weeks. so i'm trying to cram as much as possible, plus work on regular work, and then my buddy's 4kq v8 conversion tomorrow... and tonight i'm pulling the engine and trans from a passat. ARG~!

Looks good Derek. Those flanges are thick enough in the right spots and thin enough on the weld spots to ensure a flat flange after the welding is done.

Looks freaking fast. I cant wait.

Is this where we discuss the fire calling the kettle black? Between the two of you I'm about ready to take up lawn bowling or maybe curling.

The car is looking fast and very well sorted. It's going to be nice!!

I thought it was the pot calling the kettle black?

But good point, those two set bad (good) examples for everyone.

I knew that it didn't sound right, but for the life of me couldn't come up with anything other than the general idea. :bashtard: I'm not sure which Haydn would rather be called anyway...a fire or a pot.

Good progress. I like your repots, always substantial and informative.

One question, that hard fuel line running below the IM runners, is it going to interfere with the water manifold and are you going to be able to access the IM lower bolts without cracking that line open and moving it?
derracuda

Post by derracuda »

the line below comes close to the water manifold. as for access to the lower IM bolts, if the IM is coming off, the fuel system is going to be opened anyhow. these types of rails don't have retainers for the injectors and they will just pop out.

You know what's funny? The trucks here in China have Holset turbos. I cannot read what types they are.

Should I try to scrounge a couple? hehehe

Every time I see them, I have to think of Derek awesome project.

I think Derek needs an intervention. He clearly has a 'problem' with Aluminum welding :)

*shakes violently*... i feel empty without the TIG... invalid if you will. i might not be a super awesome TIG welder, but man, it's sooo handy to have!

... Dang Derek, I just went through you thread once again and I have to say your work me a crap ton of inspiration. So clean and I just watched you exhaust videos on youtube again... and damn. I want that sound SOOOOOO bad. I swear I make the least amount of progress out of anyone on this board. I need to kick it up a gear! :bashtard:
