i actually have dibs on mholmes' H&R's, but thanks though :)

i went out to the wrecking yard to look for some more B3 front struts and found a pair, so i will probably have some struts converted to 5 lug tonight and be waiting for installation :D

Aight, now someone figure out if '90 200TQ hubs, possibly built for the short-spline bolted axle arrangement, will work on the late build 20v B3s with the bolt axles instead of the nut ones.

Nope won't fit into B3's wheel bearings

derracuda wrote:ok! big update. after someone pooh pooh'd me on AOL saying that people have been using A4 hubs for years, appearantly since before i was born... to do 5 lug swaps on B3's, a new solution for my 5 lug swaps has been uncovered to me,

B3 struts that use the 75mm wheel bearing
5ktq hub
4kq rear wheel bearing

this will kill many birds with one stone.

#1. swap to 5lugs
#2. allow use of a strut with an easily obtainable 19mm ball joint
#3. allow use of the older through spline axles with the larger axle shaft and inner CV
#4. allow me to keep about 10mm of wheel clearance since the B3 strut doesn't have so much offset.
#5. allow me to retain the stock 4kq steering arms.
#6. the b3 strut housing is a good deal lighter than the 5ktq

as for brakes, i bolted the A4 rotor and caliper to the B3 strut and they fit beautifully, so the brakes are covered :D

this is soo cool because i either haven't been looking in the right places or something. but this whole 5lug swap just got easier, cheaper, and giving more tire/wheel space!

THIS is what i like to see!!!! Nice work Drrrrrrick!

ok, there's a new catch. the 5ktq hub doesn't have the exact same offset as the 75mm bearing'd B3 hub.... so the hub sits further in...hmm, gonna have to play with this some more. now the 5ktq hub almost touches the spindle and the rotor now sits further in by what appears to be about 5mm *scratches head*

Thats where spacers come in.
I thought the 5KTQ couldnt work...

Does this me there is an econo 5 lug conversion out there?

Just an idea..

Do you think it would be possible to space the hub out a bit (with a suitably machined spacer) when being installed in the bearing to suit the rotor alignment? Hmm.. But then that would affect required drivshaft length slightly. Maybe now the hub is too close in for the driveshaft anyway? :?

Looks like 'further investigation is required' ! :wtf:

May be better than spacing the wheel itself out, and messing around with caliper bracketry and different rotors.. :frustrated:

yeah, i'm going to try a spacer between the bearing and hub today. the axle spline holds it all together tight, so i don't see what 4mm would hurt.

it's funny how much larger the 60 series 205 tires look over the 195's :P

i also broke the buffer out and did a little pre test buffing.... man oh man, this thing's gonna be sweet :D

i absolutely LOVE this color! i think one day when my other projects are done, i'd like to strip this car down for a restoration and do an A1 paint job on it 8)

ok! solution has been implemented. shims from a differential shop here in town fit the bill perfectly :) now the hub sits back out about where it should be.

Image

since there's no circlip that holds the wheel bearing into the spindle, i spaced the bearing out 2mm with shims between the bearing and the seat inside the spindle.

this pic is from the backside
Image
Image

then i put 4mm worth of shims between the hub and the wheel bearing
Image
Image

now the hub sits out about where the 4lug hub does. the 5lug hub is on the left, the 4lug on the right
Image

i now only need one washer between the caliper carrier and the spindle and i'm golden 8)

288mm rotors of good freeness :D

Hmmm...spacing bearing against retainer=cool. Putting spacers between fitted/chamfered faces in the bearing and hub=hmmmm...

they can't go anywhere, they are pressed tight against the inner bearing race and then will be sandwiched by the axel stub. they're also stuck around the hub shaft, so they can't fly out, it'd be impossible.

:P that's a trick my dad taught me a long time ago. it saves threading the wheel bolts all the way in whether you're doing a test or trying to get the rotor to stay in place while you get the caliper/carrier back in place if it's been taken off.

and yeah corey, my slinky took one for the team :D

gotta have something to fall back on incase this 5lug swapping bidness don't pan out in the long run ;)

hmmm derek I've got some doubts in regards to spacing that hub out
derracuda

Post by derracuda »

i did at first too, but the hub is pressed more than halfway through the inner race which is about 15mm worth of surface area, it's now down to about 11mm. once the axle is in place and torqued, ain't nuthin' going nowheres :P

:woowoo:

drivers corner is done!

had to swap to the 19mm lower ball joints
Image

also had to grind a little out of the back of the spindle so the CV joint wouldn't touch it.

shweet!
