I need a little help before I can proceed...

I can't find the connector for that heater valve for the life of me! Anyone know where I should be able to find it?

not sure where this plug goes either... its somewhere up by the radiator, but thats all I know.

The after run sensor is in the water manifold.

oh, and Austin... the broken wire on the coolant temp sensor actually ended up being the one thats not used!

Second to last picture looks to be the wires for the oil pressure gauge sender. Should be on drivers side about 6" or so in front of the knock sensor, screwed into the block. It's about 2" in diameter and 1.5" or so in height. More or less straight down behind power steering pump. Progress looks great btw.

I thought those wires were the black and blue connectors you can see in that same picture?

I believe you are right on the blue and black connectors. Looked at them and was going from memory. Sorry about that. Can't really see the colors too well, but they look like they match the o2 sensor wires. (can't see them that great) perhaps if the plug has been removed for an aftermarket one?

If you can't figure out which wire is which, if you touch the two after run sensor wires together the fan will start moving. so if you're at a complete loss trying to figure out which wire is which, that might help. but yeah, those wires with the plastic cover type things on them should be for your after run.

For the coolant valve thing. I'm trying to figure out what it's pointing at for the part where it says: this goes here no?
is that a little vacuum line?

OK so now I have some conflicting info... do the black and blue connectors go on the after run (on the head) or on the oil pressure thing? They definitely aren't 02 sensor ones as thats on the other side of the bay.

Phil, I'll try that thanks. The other thing is completely wrong now that I remember a few things. The line I have the arrows on is just supposed to get a manifold reference, then the two smaller diameter plastic hardlines coming out of it go to the diff lock and the A/C. Then the other large diameter hardline goes down to the vac reservoir. So now I'm not completely sure where that heater valve is supposed to get its vac from unless its just from the manifold...

that vacuum line goes to the IM the heater valve should go to a white plastic line coming from the firewall small piece of rubber vac line to connect.

To radiator correct the other may be your missing plug.

So I still don't know where all of that stuff goes, but I did make some progress...



Hank, everything fits! ps pump clears, rad clears, hood clears, tb clears everything. Even the throttle cable reaches, I just need to figure out a way to mount it on that tab you gave me and how to affix the cable to the tb cam. Maybe modify the stock rubber piece.

I put the non-spare head back on today (timed it of course) along with mls gasket and ARPs. Also got the rad in. I have run into two issues...

I had a new timing belt and lost it. I dunno how. Gotta get one at the dealer asap I guess. I also don't have the gaskets for my water manifold yet, so I can't put that on.

Also, I'm trying to figure out the fuel line situation. I've got to do some "interesting" stuff to make it all work. Its annoying, but I'll figure it out tomorrow I'm sure. If I had the t-belt and the water manifold gaskets I could start it tomorrow. (NOT drive it) I've got a lot of small stuff to do like tighten up the trans mounts, put the driver's axle in, tighten all axle and driveshaft bolts, etc., etc. Also need to get my bilsteins back. The spacers are getting made for me next week though! I wish I had a lathe so I could do it myself :/

Why not get a 180* fitting for the front of the fuel rail and run both lines straight back? And mount that FPR on the firewall. Would be much cleaner

Ed, thats not the final configuration. I was just mocking stuff up making sure it would fit at that point. Also, this is just to be able to move the car around from time to time. By the time it gets driven next I think it'll probably be full fuel system upgrade, rods, tube header, etc.

At this point, the IM is all bolted down now, water manifold is on, vac lines have all been run, etc. Now I just need to wire the MAT sensor and TPS, torque the head down, tighten a bunch of crap, fill fluids, and start. I'll be waiting a while for my bilsteins though :( they haven't even gotten in touch with me yet.

How do you tighten down the IM bolts that are under the runners? The AAN IM has holes right through the plenum for access.
Can't get my head around this for people that have custom IMs.

But seriously, isn't the plenum in the way? Or are the runners angled in such a way that there is no interference?

lol its a little hard to get in there, but very doable. I used a 10" 3/8 extension, a universal joint, and a 6mm allen socket.

How do you tighten down the IM bolts that are under the runners? The AAN IM has holes right through the plenum for access.
Can't get my head around this for people that have custom IMs.

You can get at them without going through those holes. I didn't have an 8" long 6mm allen wrench and got it done. Once the fuel rail is out of the way you can get right in there with a traditional allen wrench.

turbo coolant pump thermoswitch -- red/green, red/black
carbon canister frequency valve -- red, white/red
motronic coolant temp sensor -- grey/brown, green/black
engine oil temp gauge sensor -- black/brown
engine oil pressure gauge sensor -- black/white
autocheck oil pressure switch -- white/grey
instrument cluster engine oil pressure switch -- blue/black
a/c control head engine coolant temp sensor -- brown/black, yellow/red

Thanks Nick, I only have one plug and one sensor left that aren't connected... I thought they'd both be blue, but one is blue and the other is tan. Maybe they go together, but it doesn't make sense for me. Maybe you could check what your heater valve plug looks like? I'd love to hear about how you fixed your trigger error

Thanks Ian, that helps. The car should be ready to fire up as soon as I get my timing belt! I got the TPS and the IAT all wired up today. It took some serious guess work on the TPS lol. Also upgraded to 1.95 firmware. (was scary turning the key and making sure not to bump the starter)

Chris, the knife is from Kuma. I sent him a care package while he was in Iraq and it had a little R8 Audi in it which he carried in his pocket at all times. He knew the traumatic experience I had and sent me the Kukri to help ward off any future home intruders lol. It also has some meaning to it because he carried it with him in Iraq for two tours.
