Re: Casey's 200 20v: What do I lose with VEMS vs Stock ECU?

Post by WOMBAT »

I bought it online through Autozone - It was the cheapest quantity with a decent heat rating. I had to put down $23 for some good 3M spray adhesive made for this application though.

I need some VEMS been there done that insight. Since removing my stock ecu, I have a few changes in my dash and I want to know if its because the stock ECU isn't there to control them or if I really do have problems (possibly my ignition switch being faulty).

My brake, ABS, and batt light stay on constantly, almost as though my dash doesn't realize my engine is running (displaying all warning lights as though the ign is on but engine isn't running) Is this related to the change in ECU?

Also, my multi function display for MPG is out but I know that was factory ecu territory so I'm not worried.

Lastly, my neat screen that displays "OK" when starting or whatever warning message doesn't do anything anymore - was that a stock ecu item?

Thanks in advance!

Those lights should not be coming on because of VEMS. The ONLY time I have ever seen all of them come on at once was when my alt. belt snapped. You sure your alternator (and battery) is in good shape? What does your Voltage look like? I guess the ign switch might be able to cause that too... you definitely have some electrical gremlin going on and I think the dash lights and your no-start are linked.

Yeah, like Chris said those lights should not be on.

Your trip computer will no longer work, but the autocheck should work the same as it did before.

Ok, that doesn't read "OK" or anything when I start the car. The battery has been perfect, the car starts strong everytime, slowly over time my analog battery gauge has crept over 12v, VEMS reads over 13V when running (something like 13.6V) and always has even when the analog batt gauge read low.

The first time I attempted to start the car, there was some smoke from under the driver's side kick panel so I pulled it but couldn't find the source and it didn't do it again.... Hopefully that was my ign switch giving up?

In any event, sounds like the ign switch is the right place to start. Is it a complete unit with key and tumbler or is it detached from that?

the ign switch is just a little plastic thing that slides in the back of the tumbler assembly. Look at autohausaz.com and find it, should be a picture of the exact part.

Win, thanks! Ordered a switch and a coolant expansion tank so that Nick would stop giving me a hard time about my engine bay being ruined by my yellowish cloudy one.

Ign switch didn't help... Oh well.

Does this mean my injector o-rings are bad? Me thinks so.

Hey BTW where did you buy the material you used on the underside of the hood?

Long overdue update

The 200 now has nearly 2,000mi on the new engine and it has been trouble free! I do have a leaky cam seal though and my steering rack is starting to drip so I'll have to grab a new one soon. I'll need to rethink my catch can as it currently gets pummeled with rain which makes for gross oily streaks on everything behind it.

Took the car to the dyno (VEMS Colchester, VT with Jason Russel - Highly recommended!) last Thursday to get it tuned before the long trip to Ocean City, MD for H2Oi. It performed perfectly and the only problem was that I neglected to check my wastegate spring, which resulted in us finding out it was still stock :slap: so I could not build more than 18PSI on open loop boost control, tapering to 15 or so by redline. Due to this, peak power was at 5,750RPM with 16psi netting me 265WHP and around 280WTQ. Sadly far less than I was expecting, but I have a 2.2Bar spring on the way and will try again 8)

Was only 1 of 2 T44 Audis at the show, the other being Nick! He took home 3rd in the Mild Audi category, congrats to him! And now some pics and vids....

Wow Casey!

That is one CLEAN and very tastefully modded T-44! I really like your car's stance and the V8 bumper looks like it belongs on there. I can only hope that I can get my 200 as well-sorted and looking as sweet as yours. You have definitely set the bar very high for old school Audi owners!

I agree, we should start a T44 mafia here. Your 200 is gangsta right now! To think you were so down on it only a few months back. All you have to do is drive one of these cars and you fall right back in love :) Looking forward to seeing results with more boost!

Not quite gangsta status yet - need to get that aggressive stance back with some 18x10's all around 8)
