:D took it out for it's initial break-in last night. 3" Downpipe is homemade and totally awesome looking (haha!). We just quickly mated the downpipe to the rest using the flange and no gasket maker because the flange is going to be swapped out with a v-band anyway, so no point in sealing it all up when we don't have to.

The car is awesomely slow on 6psi, lol. Sent the log to Marc, now waiting for a reply with a confirmation that everything's good, and some more boost. Everything else looked good to us (coolant temp, oil temp, IAT, etc.)! Except the turbo seems to back up with oil upon shutdown and pour smoke out... not sure what's going on there. With the idle so low (around 750), it sounds like a car with a big engine. Once we have a bit more boost I'll post a video.

Also had to run with only one headlight. The 3" AEM dryflow we had on there just will not fit right onto the turbo with the headlight in, so dad might be looking at an HKS mushroom filter. The car certainly looks badass with one headlight and the big FMIC.

Don't want to do the full reveal on QW yet as it's not quite 100%

Getting pretty bad WG creep, fixing with a 2.2 spring from Marc. Hopefully that arrives by Friday, but we'll see.

With the WG creep, we're seeing about 20psi on 90% duty cycle for the WG. I'm gonna crank the spring all the way down for starters, and wait for the spring. Feels like a laggy bish right now :)

Fixed the turbo smoke issue, had no idea drain was supposed to be on the bottom. Reclocked CHRA, smoke gone.

I discovered a popped boost hose last night, on the samco coming off the coldside, on the end that goes into the next pipe. Put it back in, 20psi, but still getting bad WG creep. Should be seeing 20psi A LOT sooner than 5500rpm!

3bay coupler + 30psi is a no-no ;) I wish you luck even with 5-ply but for different reasons. Make sure you are bead-rolled AND have some sticky stuff on there to hold them on if you are still having issues.

A proper bead and 3-ply or 5-ply silicone is all you need. Even screw clamps will work fine. I would have the pipes CLEAN. The silicone will grab the metal and hold tight, any oil, dirt, or hairspray will help it slip over the bead.

Got all the main connections fixed... 4 ply Vibrant silicone stuff. We still have the samco coming off the turbo as well as the Samco going into the intake manifold. We pressure tested from Samco to Samco to nearly 40psi - no leaks. Woo!

BUT, in order to test, I had to hold my finger on the top of the BPV - the line that normally goes into the intake manifold. I let it go once, and the release was quite violent, with air seemingly shooting out the bottom to atmosphere. Does this mean we have a bad BPV?

This test also did not include the N75 system. There may still be a leak there.

Asking because we're not hitting our boost targets - we're 5psi or more off... 25 or 22psi. Once we hit about 20 it seems that the sound coming from the turbo changes quite dramatically.

on the bpv, you might have better luck if you route the pressure side of the turbo to the *side* of the valve, not the bottom.

That's where it's routed in... comes in side, exits out the bottom. Had to hold my finger on the top, small port (disconnected the Samco off the turbo so the vac line wouldn't reach).

Re: Pops' 1997 S6 2.5L Stroker build - chasing boost

Post by chaloux »

Oh goodness. No pics/video now (coming at the end of the weekend) but holy CRAP, made a huge breakthrough.

Dad rotated the intake cam 1 tooth. Night and day. 1500rpm spool difference, a complete transformation. This is what I thought the car SHOULD have felt like. Boost starts building strong at 3krpm, pulls your head back nicely at 4krpm at 25psi. We'll be working on getting some more boooooooooost in there tomorrow with Marc :)

Huge sigh of relief. I was honestly starting to get worried that all of my research was wrong, I didn't know how I could have screwed up that bad. lol. phewwwwwwwwww

We believe it was off. Idles much smoother now as well. And fuel is where it should be now (more!).

This makes me think mine is a bit off. Mine don't line up quite perfectly with the edge. I bet mine is a tooth off.
