Okay, I am trying to google this, but am having a bit of trouble finding any real good info.

Today we were about to put the head on w/ the copper gasket. We had our bit of MIG wire and went to start putting it in the o-rings, but when we tried tapping it in with a brass hammer it wouldn't stick. Okay... so we try a small steel hammer. No dice. The wire is flattening out a little bit, and the o-ring actually widens trying to accept the wire, but it doesn't stick. Thankfully we have lots of wire, but how the eff do we get it to stay in the block so we know it's doing what it's supposed to when we torque the head down?

WTF. Is superglue the answer?

Everything else is pretty well ready to go together. Running into a snag with the head was a bit of a bummer. Dad has a couple small bits coming from 034 and EFIexpress, but otherwise the motor is nearly ready to be whole again.

We found out something interesting today as well - the intake manifold that came off the car was fully ported. It didn't have the guides removed, but it was beautiful inside. I used it as a template to take the gasket matching dad had done a step further. My job is still not as nice as the other, but it's pretty good.

Stainless wire and a brass hammer is what we use, don't know what size groove was cut so I can't
make a guess on size. The shop that cut the grooves should have no problem installing the wire.
It takes lots of patience and practice to do correctly.

Thanks, we'll check this out. Dad is taking some measurements on the wire and groove sizes now. We think that the wire might just be too big for the groove - reading around online suggests that the wire should be .001" larger. We'll see.

Got the wire in today. My friend stopped by the shop at just the right time and while I held the wire down, dad hit it in with the brass hammer, and then said friend glued it. Then we waited 15-30 seconds, and let go of screwdrivers holding wire down, and finally it stayed! Doing this all 5 cyl only took an hour, and we got better and faster as we went.

After that, put the head on, got the intake and exhaust manifolds on (exh. with turbo etc.) and now doing the serp belt pieces - alternator, v. fan, etc.. Pics later! It actually looks like a REAL engine now!

Today was one of those days where a lot of small stuff gets done but it doesn't feel like you actually did anything :)

We have a list of about 20 items before the engine goes in, and about half or more are crossed off. Up left is the frost plugs, turbo coolant and oil lines (big one), putting a nipple in the intake manifold for the quick spool operation, getting the motor off the stand and onto the hoist so we can put the clutch/flywheel on, and a few other small things like sensors and oil and valve cover etc..

So what does "dream stage" mean - all the parts are sitting there, or it's an idea, or something else? The //S has been on the lift since October, and it feels like forever. Didn't even see winter!

looking a little more complete now. All we have to do is put together the oil return line from the turbo - you can see it hanging there attaching to nothing. Dad got some stainless bent today, we'll be doing that in about an hour. Then it's fill with oil, turn over, check errthang, put the plugs in, valve cover, coils, remove from stand, install clutch FW PP, and INTO THE CAR

Lookin good. Do you still have to fab all the IC piping and such after it goes in?

Just got the last line to the turbo done, as well as the rear hoist mount on the engine and the valve cover. After dinner, that sucker's going back on the hoist, and into the engine bay. Pics to come!

Hey Martin, thanks! I actually saw your thread pop up again yesterday and was going to comment on how nice that manifold looks ;). I haven't started my swap yet... once you have a hoist, it doesn't seem worth it to start working on a project like that until it's free, hah.

Yeah, the IC piping has to be done. That actually shouldn't be too bad, we're waiting for some 3-2.5" reducers from 034, but other than that cutting and beading the pipes should go quick.

Breaking to take care of the little man while my wife swims, and dad has dinner. Will be back at'r by 8 tonight. Turbo is entirely hooked up (except air - the important part), there is a shizahload of stuff on the driver's side, about 80% done over there. Just the last annoying bits :)

Then it's plugs, coils, injectors, and go!

The turbo is REALLY close to the wheel well. Where the SQ manifold places it is kind of bad... it's far back and the quick spool valve pushes it out so far. Ah well, it'll be alright. It'll have to have a 90* bend come right off the v-band though, and might have to do away with the long flex pipe for the WG.

QS valve - it basically shrinks the AR on the hotside, allowing for quicker spool, and then opens up when boost has been achieved, returning the top end.

To do list is still pretty big, 10-15 things, but at least this is the last to do list :)

Everything is hooked up except the air in and out. Tomorrow: first heat cycle, intake plumbed, and exhaust tacked.
