I have to say I'm impressed with your new ride. I can't wait to see it in person and I'll bet it is a kick. Looks to be way well sorted. Do you DD it or is it just a play toy? Either way it looks nice, but
It's all in the build!! That's why I never seem to get projects done I guess.

I'll be DD it more once I get the breather draining back to the pan....which will be tomorrow. It's a riot, but the rods have me worried. I should turn the boost down.....

John, I don't get where is your pilot bearing going to sit? AAN Crankshaft?

Good progress!

Yes an AAN crank, but they still have provisions machined into the end of the crankshaft to accept the pilot bearing needed for the 016. I also had to machine a few mm off of the hub of the 016 disc so that it wouldn't bottom out on the input shaft splines. The setup will be a Spec Stage 3+ pressure plate with a 3+ 016 disc all mated to the altered 01e fidenza flywheel. How do I know this works you might ask? Hank and I have already been down this road and this is the setup that he ran in his car until he went to an 01e and went with a different setup to hold more torque. The kicker is that when he went to the 01e he had to weld the lip back onto the fidenza so that the bearing could again reside in the flywheel. :-)

I see. You two should have just swapped the flywheels then...

Ha Ha That would have been the smart thing to do, but his motor hadn't blown up yet and I was still going to run stock. The flywheel was bought for the other Urq. I probably just should have kept my original findenza 016 flywheel that I traded Sean for his 01e fidenza. I think that the 016 flywheel is about 5lbs lighter, but we needed to get his car on the road for Urq25 so the trade was made figuring that I would probably go with an 01e tranny anyhow.

Hey now! If you were working on the right car you'd have the right flywheel. :-)

I got a little more progress to post. The engine is about together and waiting for a spot to rest permanently. I stripped most everything from the engine bay to get it ready to paint. It really wasn't all that bad, but had a few rust spots that needed to get cleaned up. I pulled the steering rack, and hydraulic assist brake booster. I've decided that I'm going to go with vacuum assist brakes since my hydraulic booster was leaking and I really didn't want to take the time to rebuild it.

Most everything pulled out of the bay and spend quite a bit of time cleaning it up with brake cleaner. I found that you can buy it in a gallon jug instead of just the spray cans. I works real good on the grime and old audi undercoating, but my oh my does it get you floating after a few hours of brushing and wiping.
Image

Pulled the blower housing, speedometer cable, and windshield wiper assemble out of the tray to clean it up and repair a leak where some of the goop had cracked and let water into the dash area around the fuse box. I just used a brush on seam sealer for this repair.
Image

Wire brushed the rust spots under the steering rack and a few other places to get down to bare metal and be able to cover with seam seal.
Image

Washed with water, comet cleaner and a scotch brite pad to get the oils and grime that were still on from the brake cleaner job. This not only gets the oils off, but lightly scuffs the gloss off the paint for good adhesion for the new paint.
Image

Taped everything off. Notice the brace from the passenger side strut tower to the firewall is still there, but without the coil bracket on top. Its not the prettiest brace, but I think I can use it for coil mounting or something else and it won't be in the way much. I hope anyway.

And painted early this morning. I was trying to find a time where it wasn't so hot and humid. It's been raining for the last few days and although the temps have dropped to the low 100s to mid 90s in the day, it's been about 60% humidity and those kind of numbers don't do well with painting. This morning it was about 80 and 40% humidity, so I went for it.

It turned out decent for a garage paint job and will look a lot cleaner when put back together. It's really too bad that the outside isn't already painted to match, but I'll get to that maybe next year. At least I can now start on the putting back together part of the project. It's almost exciting.

It has been a really long day however. I started early this morning with the goal in mind of getting the bay painted. I went to find a cutoff blade to cut the coil bracket off early this morning only to find that my freezer was leaking water out the door and it was unthawing. I have a son in law from Wyoming that we split a beef every year and as you can imagine dealing with the freezer took top priority. I pulled everything out, defrosted it, and put it all back in to see if it was going to get cold. 5 hours later it was cool, but nowhere near freezing. :( So a lot of my day was spent buying, unloading, jockying the old out and the new in and transferring the food. Oh and cooking some up to freeze for chilli or something. What a bummer, but it's taken care of at least. I still got the bay painted and as I post this I hear one of those BIG mouse traps go off. Yea, I've been trying to catch this huge mouse/rat that thinks he owns the house. This morning was his unlucky day. I hope he doesn't have family!!!

Ah that looks great! I need to do the same... was actually thinking about how much of a shame it was that I spent so much time cleaning the engine bay and then reinstalling everything, knowing in the back of my head that the bay needs to be painted.. oh well, another year!

Looks pristine now!

Very nice, clean starting point is the best! Will you be updating the wiring harness/fuese box? Now is the perfect time.

Martin, although you are right in saying this would be the perfect time to update the fuse box, I traded Hank my white coupe gt donor car because in had the digital dash and I figured the harness would have been too cut up. It would have been a decent harness and box otherwise, but it's already gone. At this point, I really don't have time to deal with that kind of work and still make the deadline of the Vegas GTG, so to answer your question, it won't be going in this time around. I'm sure that everytime I'm on my back under the steering wheel I'll cuss and wish I had though!!

Brandon, do you have a source? I'm running out of time and that is one of those things that I've thought about, but never did the research and purchase. Is it a brace on the outside of the firewall?\

That's the Super Size version of a mouse trap he is laying in. He may have looked bigger when I had him cornered in the master bathroom and he had teeth bared, eyes boring through me, and leg muscles taunt and ready to spring at any moment. When you look death in the eye things always seem bigger than reality. :D

This is the carnage when he was cornered......don't tell me "lil field mouse" When he decided to go, I'm surprised I didn't get torn up!!

I know that it was just particle board, but still. :o

You tempt me just because I really don't know what needs to be kept and what needs to go with the existing harnesses. When you say a coupe gt harness, what exactly are you talking and what does it take to go in and out? Speaking of harness, the one going to the computer has a branch just inside the firewall that looks to go to the driver's side. Do you know what this is? I'm figuring probably power for the computer going to the fuse/relay panel??

For those of you that keep a record, here is the Vin # of Her Urq. It turned out pretty good. I thought about painting over it, but I'm glad I didn't.

best is to change the entire thing, that way all of the connectors are new style and not much if anything to splice.
I am assuming you are moving the alternator to the driver side, for more Intercooler space?

Yep, 4 wires going to the fusebox for various signals and power to the ECU.
On the drivers side it's a square 4 pin connector if I remember.
PITA is you need to remove the HVAC box to remove it properly, it's tied to the firewall with plastic zip ties.

Cheers

When you say the entire harness, are you talking about everything....window regulators, running and brake lights, etc, etc or are you talking about just what goes from the engine bay to the relay/fuse panel and dash? Another reason I've shied away from the fuse box swap is that while I was waiting for the updated dash to arrive I pulled the perfect old style dash out of my other Urq and installed it, but now a new harness would have to all be spliced into the old dash. :(

I hadn't planned on moving the alternator since I don't plan on an A/C delete. I will still have to have room for an A/C compressor and if I use the old recip compressor it will have to stay on the drivers side. I could probably get away with using an updated compressor out of a 5k or something and install it on the passenger side, but then it kind of defeats the purpose of freeing up I/C space and I might as well have the alternator there and not have to screw with wiring.
