I was kind of thinking the same thing, but mine is leaking some and swapping would be a fix for that.

I had a bunch of brake issues where I had changed the master cylinder and installed an aftermarket proportioning valve and thought that I was just leaking leftover brake fluid, but I did the taste test and the oil was waaaaay better tasting than brake fluid. I dont know if that is good or bad though. Well I do know that even better tasting than brake fluid it still wasn't that good. :D

Thanks! The Borg Warner EFRs are still a bit tricky to get. Mine is on order, bit still a few weeks out. Doesn't matter a whole lot since I still have tons to do. Supposedly there was a problem with the twin scroll housings that has delayed those turboes some, but for those of us that want a single inlet housing, it has freed up quite a few center sections. Hopefully this will speed up delivery some.

On a good note however I did receive a package from 034 in the last while and after a little bit of adjustment to a few flange holes it slid right onto the new exhaust studs, is bolted down with new nuts and is now waiting for that turbo.

As you can probably see, I also got the 3B intake manifold bead blasted and cleared along with motormounts and oil filter housing.

Nice balancing write up, I did same thing to my engine + I made my original cranks clone, every time I decide to reaplace fw or clutch I can just balance that to my engine with out pulling that thing a part

Looking great John,

Watch you don't loose your nuts down those spark plug holes.

Cheers,

  Only if she lets someone else drive it. If left at the house and it's up to her to drive, this car could be very slow indeed. Besides Sean, your 300hp and 4:11 gears will do just fine I'm sure.

How did you know that the plugs were still out? :o Now you have me worried even though if I counted the right amount of nuts out of the bag, I used them all. That would sure be a show stopper.

Early bird gets the engine built? Or is it a honeydo day?

Looking like you will be able to fire it up even without the turbo pretty soon.
Don't forget to replace that back heater hose spout, much easier now than later ;)

Yea you are right. I was looking at that the other day thinking I needed to swap to the 90* fitting so the heater hose will fit. I think the 7A fitting is a bit larger in diameter also.

Ha. She cornered me last night and wanted to know when I was going to change her brakes on the A4? The dealer told her she needed front pads 10k ago. She needs to go get her free (read already paid for) oil change and checkup and doesn't want to show up without the brakes changed. I told her to give them a what's up, seeing as they seemed to have jumped the gun somewhat on the pads. I want to get them done before it gets over a 100deg....ooooops .........too late. No room in the garage.

John,

If you have a second can you measure the width of the manifold at the turbine mounting surface? Trying to figure something out.

TIA!

I'm not sure exactly what you want or are after, but see if these will help.

Thanks! I'm trying to figure out if a wastegate could fit above the turbine flange (instead of on the bottom of #5). The first issue is space the second is getting a good weld. Depending on the level of pain there I may change some plans.

The manifold in the picture is one without provisions for a wastegate as the EFR turbo that I plan on using has an internal gate. Im not sure how I'm going to like that, but it sure simplifies things and should make for a clean install.

Yeah, I don't like the compromises made in the WG version of the manifold. The EFRs look great but for the pricetag. I'm planning on a Holset VGT but may go internally WG'd Holset to get to Vegas.

A few small updates. I haven't been getting near as much done as I've wanted, but I keep getting little things done. I'm to that point that I need to mate the engine and tranny together, but was missing a few things. I have a fidenza aluminum flywheel for an 01e that I traded my 016 fidenza to Sean figuring that an 01e would be going into His Urq. I'm keeping the 016 in this Urq so I either needed a new flywheel or had to do a little fixing. With the bearing in the flywheel the 016 clutch hangs up unless a few mm are shaved off of the bearing portion of the flywheel.

The flywheel ready to trim.
Image

I took it down to just below the top circlip groove.

I also found the already bought clutch slave cylinder. I wanted to change it while the tranny was out and figured it would eventually show up. For those of you that have done one while in the car you know what I mean when I say that they can sometimes be a PITA. I had a hard time removing this one even outside the car.

The new slave

Slides right in with a bit of lube and a cleaned out bore.

I also got a bracket made for the VR sensor to look at the 60/2 tooth wheel on the crank. I took the aluminum holder that sat on the top of the bell housing of the WX, cut it up a bit and welded it to a plate. The cap screws and standoffs are stainless and the complete bracket aluminum for a good signal. It turned out nice and has good rigidity and some adjustment.
