That's right, I tend to forget about that. This car does like to be the center of attention. I should really try and find the previous owner some day that bought it off the car show floor.

So I took a little break from the body work and cracked open my spare 01E that had a frozen 1st/2nd gear collar.
Other than the frozen collar, this thing is like new! The paper sticker with the original part number is still in the case.
This guy will get a new collar, new syncros and a 4:1 diff.

Ever since I put in my solid linkage shifter I have been without a real reverse lockout. Well, while I had the transmission apart, I figured out how to put in a reverse deterrent if you will by using an extra detent on the end of the selector shaft. This engages the shaft only as you go to reverse to give extra resistance. Building up aluminum and tapping it would have been ideal, but 24x1.5mm taps are around $200..
So out comes the JBweld and a $4.00 24x1.5mm

Boss's sister has ~150k on the original chains in her Jetta.
Change the oil every 5-6k (still using VW-approved synthetic) and suffer no problems. 20k mile oil change intervals are great for people who throw away the car after three years.
I think I have the motor mount situation figured out. Just need a 2.5 to mock it up... and another small-chassis car to play with... and a place to work on it... Just need those things!

BMW's have the extra tension for reverse lockout unlike the VW/Audi usual "push down, over and up/down"

i must say thats a pretty cool idea!
on a scale of 1-10, i just want to know cause ill be diving into it over winter, how difficult is it to take apart that 01e? i have the JHM video handy as a walkthrough, and ive split half a dozen fwd vw trannys to put LSD's in and never had an issuse.

It is pretty strait forward especially with the video. The biggest hurdle was getting the tools together, the big pipe for the press and the tool to pop off the rear housing. And those two were pretty minor. I made the tool from a harmonic balancer puller and the big pipe is not required, buy definitely helpful.

The transmission seems to work well on jack stands up to 130 mph or so.. No road test yet, the progress on this project is so slow compared to normal that it is driving me crazy. Today I am spending time with the wife again tending to a sick horse that may or may not make it through the end of the year. Talk about a roller coaster, 1 year ago he was a national champion..
Anyways, there is some progress, I have turned into a perfectionist on the front fenders after learning bodywork on the rear. The plan was supposed to be the other way around, but somehow the front is getting all of the love. It's all good, the rear still looks awesome.
Here is the left front in primer. If anyone is interested in pulling molds of these let me know, it would have to be local in SoCal, or very highly insured shipping at this point.

Don't. Chains are good for only about 60,000 miles. All those guides to replace. Pull the motor every time this is needed.

Jim some really good work on the flares. i have a set of UrS flares to weld to my car also. Cut ends off a UrS front bumper.
I have a fglass RS2 bumper i will make a mold of the bumper ends for the front and use the trimmed off pieces for the rear bumper. just have them bolt on. Your car looks really good.
And as for shaved or not. i would say shaved or the thinner trims on B4's. Black trim is a good contrast to cut the yellow up a bit.
Are those b5/s4 side skirts? how was fitment of them. much trimming to be done?
And the pic of the front fender? is it flared already?
