Convert VEMS econo seal to PNP for URS4.

Im picking up a VEMS ECU second hand but its an econo seal version. im capable of making the jumper harness to go from the econo seal connector to the motronic connector. my question is if i have to make any changes to the board itself for the AAN cam and crank sensors to function properly? also what diode do i need to put inline with the ISV to make it function properly?

depends on how the triggers are setup in the ecu you bought.

is it VR/Hall, VR/VR, or VR/Auditrigger?

actually the guy im getting it from said that he bought it from you marc, he said he was going to get in contact with you about a build sheet or something. i did ask him that and several other questions about the ECU hardware but all he knew was it was a V3 ECU. he was including the 60-2 crank seal sensor with it as he said it runs on that sensor ad the cam sensor i guess.

thats a hall type sensor, so I'll assume its setup for hall/hall. get me the serial number and I can look it up.

DIYAutotune (and probably others) sells a DIYBOB breakout box for the 55pin ECU connector. It's a pretty tidy piece, and saves you a lot of work.

HTH.

we have the jpt55 connector as well (new), $50.

so, you have two basic things you are going to need to do to make that ecu work hardware wise for audi trigger

1) convert the primary from Hall to VR

2) convert the secondary from hall to auditrigger

for #1:

make sure there is a primary trigger lm1815 on the board (by default there is, even if it isn't setup with primary trigger VR). if its not there, add it.
open SJ2
short SJ6

for #2:

add the 2nd lm1815
short sj7
JP5 and JP1 2k7-10k(Optional for sectrig scope)
JP1 and GND 5v1 zener diode cathode to JP1
R248 2k7
Remove the 0Ohm 0603 resistor, and put an NPN transistor to that place(Bottom -side, near JP7)
SJ4: Connect the middle to the +5V(face to econoseal)
Connect EC18 pin 12 to the input of the 2nd lm1815, namely JP20(first remove ec18/12 from mcp3208)
Verify R59, should be 1kOhm

things that will help you:

schematics for the top and bottom boards so you can find all the solder jumpers (SJ) and pins I have referenced above:

Thank you Marc! I have one last question, do you have this hardware I need to add and can I buy it from you? I have the motronic connector already, I robbed an old BMW ECU for one lol.

Didn't mean to step on your toes!

I thought he was making a harness and keeping the Econoseal connectors. That's where my suggestion was aimed. Easy-peasy adapter box.

If he's changing connectors at the ECU box, of course it makes sense to buy the 55-pin connector only, and buy it from you!

I do have the necessary chips yes, I'll have to look up pricing, we dont normally "sell" them, usually used internally when we have to reconfigure a box.

Im sure i can get everything from like mouser.com or digikey.com but i wanted to make sure i got all the right stuff. Im still waiting for the ECU to get here so i can see what's what with my own eyes. I think im over complicating the modifications in my head from all the information i've read on making this work. the VEMS.hu wiki makes it a bit confusing because of all the revisions and people trying different things not to mention its not the most organized wiki.

does anyone know if this will work in place as the second LM1815?
http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/National-Semiconductor-TI/LM1815M/NOPB/?qs=X1J7HmVL2ZFZsqHNjr4gdw%3d%3d&cm_mmc=google-_-ppc-_-americas-_-NationalTICoop&gclid=CI_3x5yn170CFeRlOgodwj8ADw

Im trying to figure out what the rest of the hardware i need to get as well, any input would be a great help.

Why are you trying to substitute for the lm1815? They're pretty cheap

I'd look around the MS forums most MS VR setups use them so you might find your answer there

i wasnt trying to find something to replace it, i was just trying to find another one. marc is helping me out with whats needed to convert this over now.

Well thanks to marc i got the hardware i need to add. i have most of it installed but i have a few questions about some of the hardware still.

So far i unbridged SJ2 and bridged SJ6 added the second LM1815, Bridged SJ7, added the resisitor to R248, removed the 0 ohm resistor and added the NPN transisitor.

I just labeled on the VEMS schematic to make it easier to see what i did and what im trying to figure out yet.

My first question is where to get the 5V+ for SJ7?
Image

Next is JP1 and GND 5v1 zener diode cathode to JP1. Which is JP1? each of these pads connect to different pin on the processor.
Image

Now the Connection EC18 pin 12 to the input of the 2nd lm1815, namely JP20. Which side of the jumper goes to EC18-12? in the diagram below i have the bottom side of the board.
Image

lastly i dont understand JP5 and JP1 2k7-10k(Optional for sectrig scope). if the zener diode goes on JP1 how do i add the resistor as well?

i have 2 resistors left after adding all the hardware too. sorry for being such a pain about this but i dont want to screw it up and ruin my ECU before i ever even get to drive my car on it. Ive tried to find pictures of other ECU's that have this modification done but it seems none of them have anymore than the 2nd LM1815 added, SJ6 and SJ7 jumped.

here are some board pictures for you of a pnp (a fairly early one, but perhaps still useful for you). I'll try and answer your questions tomorrow but no promises. bunch of stuff going on right now. http://www.theswansonfamily.us/modules/gallery2/v/marc/work_0/efiexpress/vems/vems_ecu_internals/

Isn't the blue line just going to a via, not a pad? You want it on the yellow pad, I would think.

well i tried to start my car less the zener diode and it will not start. i have searched for like a week straight when the list was posted and i cannot find any information or pictures of anything in the JP1 position. i've looked at the pictures marc posted and and the ECU pictured doesnt have anything in JP1 either. for the 5v at SJ4 middle pad i read in the VEMS wiki to add a jumper wire to pin 8 of the LM1815 for 5V there, im not sure if this is accurate. i seen injector pulsewidth but nothing for spark related would move in the gauges when cranking. i have my ISV unplugged as well because i know there's a diode that comes in a jumper harness for the PNP ECU's as for what it is i dont know and i dont want to take any chances. i fear it may harm the ECU if i have it plugged in.

This is what i have now.
You can see the jumper wire in the diagram from pin 5 to pin 8 on the LM1815 and i labeled lower hole on JP20 because thats now tied to EC18-12.

you mean SJ4. the reason that solder jumper has 3 pads is you can select what you are sending to sj4 input pin based on which pad you solder. in your photo, connect the bottom 2 as shown in your photo and it will bet set to +5.

Next is JP1 and GND 5v1 zener diode cathode to JP1. Which is JP1? each of these pads connect to different pin on the processor.

regarding jp1 its actually neither of the lines you have drawn. stripe of the diode faces the upper left hand pin, other side of the diode can go to either of the two large through holes on the bottom, they are both ground. but on this PnP here in front of me they used the one diagonally across from it on the bottom.

Now the Connection EC18 pin 12 to the input of the 2nd lm1815, namely JP20. Which side of the jumper goes to EC18-12? in the diagram below i have the bottom side of the board.

top top hole is the ground plane (see it connected to the huge pad via those 4 points?). bottom hole is the signal pin path.

lastly i dont understand JP5 and JP1 2k7-10k(Optional for sectrig scope). if the zener diode goes on JP1 how do i add the resistor as well?

in parallel. axial components are easiest or just solder the resistor to the board and then the diode to the edge of the SMT resistor.

hope that helps!
