^^

It was an honest mistake, "Rt. 97" is real close to "97 MPH" at 120

haha glad to see some interest in the project by ya'll because I've been fighting the same damn issue with this car since i rebuilt it. You know, maybe ya'll could help out? lol I know there is a untapped prethera (sp??? lol) of knowledge here so I'll describe whats going on with her!

Built the engine/trans setup as shown for H20i 2012 running at 29 PSI for the weekend. It was fast as....well idk but it was really effing fast. anyway, after being there for 2 days the cooltant temperature started to creep over 95 degrees C and I realized it puked a boat load of coolant out of the reservoir. So i cooled her down topped her off and kept the shanigans going. Then the next day leaving the show I topped her out at 160 mph and shortly after she got hot and yet again it puked all the coolant out. At that point i bought a torque wrench and retorqued the head to 86 ft/lbs i believe. Left the OC the next morning and just cruising normally every 25 miles all the coolant would puke out and overheat. yada yada yada towed it back from eatson and sniffed the coolant with the special blue juice and shit turned green, so i parked it because i didnt have time to mess with it. so a year later i put a new headgasket on it, lowered the boost to 16 pounds and after 2 nights of shannigans, boom same symptoms. Im really confused at this point, I consider myself a very capable mechanic with plenty of prior expirince with Vr's but this one has me confused. I double checked everything I could think of and I'm down to another blown headgasket (mk4 metal victor reinz) or a coolant circulation issue, fresh water pump installed at rebuild and working aux water pump. I maybe thinking all wrong or something ive just spent SO much time thinking and trying things that I just dont care anymore which sucks because its a sick car and i put a TON of $$ into it.

Sorry for the long back story lol any ideas/ suggestions would be much apprciated! Thanks!

Looks awesome man! Think that Southbend single will be enough for the power a GTX4202 and VR will make? I realize it's FWD and the wheels will spin before the clutch slips, but with slicks or on a dyno that may no be the case. Just curious.

Keep it up!

Sounds like maybe the heater core (if connected) might have had a different type of coolant sitting in it than what you put in afterwards. In other words, it sounds like a clog caused by unknowingly mixing pink and green coolant somehow... I'd start there.. HTH

No it doesnt hold when i 3rd doing a burnout lol I ordered it before I knew how nuts I was going on the build, I should have never put it in... :hammer:

This is starting burnout in 2nd and shift to third where my clutch just lets loose

Thanks for the input! The heater core is not connected and it is all G13 in the cooling system. But do you think it sounds plausible that a coolant circulation issue cause these symptoms? Or just another freak head gasket issue and im just crazy lol

Something is definitely clogged (coolant passages in the block)... or under designed for this application... Stock sized radiator? (car was a 4 cylinder originally)

It is a Mk3 VR radiator with 2 large fans that keep it at 80ish degrees C at idle and cruising, that is until all the coolant puke out. The block was hot tanked and fresh when i put the engine together. I have yet to hit all the coolant lines and radiator with a infrared gun to read temps to see if the radiator is cooling effectively. I should do that next I suppose. Thanks for the input!

Hey ya'll just wanted to update you on this car! I recently bought a house and a different daily and to fund all that i decided to sell the old girl to my boss. The issue I was having with the coolant puking over time was caused by the silicone hose I had put when i did the rebuild, that goes from the upper rad hose that goes to the expansion tank and then T's to the inlet of the cooling jacket on the turbo. Where the hose T's at the expansion tank the hose was not open...at all... from the factory causing a serious bind in the cooling circuit. We cut the T out and put in a plastic T with some spare hose and all seems to be well now!

That was 3 weeks ago and so far so good. I would be bummed about not owning it anymore but i have a sweet MK1 jetta TD and a nice house and BIG garage so i cannot complain haha.

Thanks for all your help guys! And take it from me and check for flow on all your hoses before install!

Image

I circled the hose I am talking about

Image

My new house! I have to say I think I made a good choice selling her haha

Image

you can easily fit 3 MK1's in there haha

Image

And the new daily! 1984 jetta TD 20 PSI 50+ MPG soot machine, bought it from my buddy who restored the body and painted it! super clean!

Thanks ya'll!

PS: my boss's other VRT mk2 jetta is going mid engine RWD this winter, maybe I'll do a thread if yall want to see!

Stock long block
head spacer
Precision 6266
20 PSI
VEMS tuned by myself

A little custom shifter relocation stand i made for it

The boots up front soon to be in the rear!!!

Nice transition!

Definitely post up a build, mid-engine is BAWS.
