Mission:
My first car was a 1987 CS Quattro just like this but in Alpine White.... everything I ever wanted to do to that car when I was 16 has been done to this car.... It just took me 17 years to do it!

Background:
My family is from Lake Tahoe and an Audi is an essential piece of equipment there if you have any hope of getting from your house to anywhere in the winter.

Retro pics of the first Audi's we owned....

My first car (Circa 1996)

I am a Jeep owner, a Subaru owner and also a Chevy owner but in my mind not owning an Audi felt strange and I needed to do something about that. I was skimming the local adds and I drove a countless number of used Audi's from 100's to A4's but I just couldnt pull the trigger on any of them because in my mind I really wanted back into a B2. By chance I heard about a lady 30 miles away selling one so off I went.... it was fate really, she wouldn't just sell to anyone (she was looking for an enthusiast), she knew her stuff (had a Bentley book) and to my surprise had two for sale.... needless to say I had to call my father in law because I was bringing one more Audi home than planned that day.
Image

Once I got the plan in my head I got back into the game.... found 034 and Techtonics and ordered some parts....
Image
Image
Image
Image

The plan was to pull the engine from the extra car, rebuild it and still drive the other car that it would go into so I could find any bugs in that car.
Image
Image
Image
Image

Then I got cracking on the engine.

Then the transmission was on the bench.

Coilovers.
Image
Image

Yes even on the West coast rust happens but this was all and I suspect a mild front end accident was to blame for it.... at any rate I had to break out the welder and fix it. I cut the part from the other car and used that for the patch.
Image
Image

The interior was important to me to get right (for me) and I always had some thoughts in my head of how I wanted things to be.
Image
Image
Image

Then it was off to the body.... I have painted before and I hate having to do it but it is what it is I guess....

Going back together

I loved the look of the V8 tails but I also liked the separation of the 100 tails so what to do?.... easy.... tinted red 100 tails.

And this is where she is today....

The local Audi dealer closed down so I thought it would be cool to take some pics....
Image
Image

And thanks to your guys help she is featured in this.... Classic Audi Euro calender November.

Image

So here we are.... I was originally going to make this project "Just A JT" but then tragedy struck close to home when one of my best friends lost control of the plane he was piloting and crashed in the mountains near our childhood homes... suddenly the project had a more important name to honor the life of not just a friend but a brother and someone I will be jamming with again someday.... Dill I miss you buddy!

The reason for this is that Bryan and I grew up playing music together.... him on the bass and me on the drums.... before he passed he wrote a song called "Free to Fly" and when I went to the site the day after I not only touched the plane but I took a piece of it too so Bryan's plane would always be a part of this car.... interestingly it fit right on the TB linkage and I just love that!

I hope you guys enjoy the pics and if anyone has any questions about anything I did to this car then please feel free to ask :)

one thing though that I wanted to bring back to the car were the special color keyed mirrors. I think it really makes a positive change to the way the car looks and the old ones were painted over in black by the previous owner.

Only problem is that I didnt want to break out the gun and mix the paint and get the mask on and yada, yada, yada....

Went to my paint supplier and had them mix me a qt of Tornado in an enamel and then had then make two spray cans from that. It went on great and matched perfect but I wasnt happy with the fact that it was a bit flat when it dried.... I should have known with a single stage.... so out came the gun anyway and the clear went on lmao.

Sorry they are iPhone pics :(

Image

Also, went a bit nuts with the Plastidip as I am just short of trying to drink this stuff because it is amazing.

Image
Image

one thing that bugged me was the vinyl on my door cards was brown and the rest of my car is black.... not a problem for Plastidip.... I was skeptical at first but man did it come out great and I am happy that it all matches. Looks soooooooo much better now.

That was an awesome day made better by swapping cars. You really have done a great job of restoring your 4kq. I couldn't believe how clean the interior is on that car, not to mention how clean the outiside is too. I just sent out my ecu to Marc so hopefully I have it back in a few weeks and then we can maybe do a drive to apple hill before tahoe.

TT seats would be really nice. I have seen people do the entire TT interior in VW's before even the dash.... That would look good in a 4k :-)

Mike your car looks fantastic!! Makes me want to do a 4kq again. How did you apply the plasti-dip on the cards?

On the center u-joint..... I ordered what I thought was the right Suzuki joint from autohausaz.com, but when it arrived it looked to be for a samarai instead of the larger Suzuki vehicles. I played around with trying to find the right cross over and instead of Suzuki, in the end I ordered one from Northern Drivetrain. It is what I am running in the Urq currently and I believe I only paid like $20 for it. Check out the dimensions before ordering, but I believe this is the link to the one I bought. I will look when I get home to make sure.

Thanks for the info I really appreciate it. I was reading a thread that recommended the Suzuki XL7 joint http://forums.audiworld.com/showthread.php?t=2231951 but I was planning on getting the old one out and taking it with me for comparison. I am lucky enough to have a Summit Racing retail store by the house and they are cool about pulling parts for comparison but if I strike out I will order one from the link.

The Plasti Dip actually applies better to vinyl than to anything else I have used it on. I prepped the cards by using acitone and then prepsole, taped it all off and then sprayed about 6 light coats. It hold amazingly to it and made it all look so much better.

That was the thread that I went with, but when I ordered the Suzuki XL joint through Autohaus.az it came wrong and was more expensive by quite a bit. I looked at my receipt from northern drivetrain and the link and part# I posted is the right joint and the one that I am currently using in my Urq.
