Well, I'm new to the Audi world and was kinda pushed this direction by a fellow MG member. This is my first Audi and glad it is an A6 4.2 Quattro. I just bought it a week ago and gave her, her first bath before posting up here. About 6 months back i noticed an A6 across the street from our Condo at a private VW/Audi dealership. Saw the price tag of $3,500 and said "DANG, thats a GREAT deal...." and wondered, "So whats wrong with it?" I just let it be and months passed and it hadnt moved. The price tag ended up getting taken down and decided i should probably run in and find out what the story was on the car. Dealer tells me its got a slipping trans.

Story is the Original Owner brought it in for some repairs/maintenance. The dealer replaced the Water Pump, Timing Belt, Dealer battery, Drive axle, and some hoses. After getting the work done realized the trans was going out. Called the owner with the news. Owner didnt want to pay for a new trans and pay for all the work done so the dealer paid him $1000 to purchase the car. At this point the Dealer was into the car $2900 trying to sell it for $3500. As stated it sat for months with no one wanting an A6 with slipping trans so they took the price tag down.

When i came in he said he would HAVE to get $2500 to get close to what he had put into it. I knowing that he was gonna take a loss offered $2000. he came back with $2300. And i got him down to $2100. So for ZF rebuild kit and torque converter i'll be looking at about $550 to get her back on the road. I feel rather lucky and VERY excited to get into the Audi world for ~$2,700.

Happy with my purchase the car is VERY clean. interior and exterior are in EXCELLENT shape. Motor runs SOO smooth and sounds great. So now i have a Trans rebuild to come in the next couple weeks that Ben (extreme90path) and i will be tackling.

Thanks Ben for talking me into buying this car. cant WAIT to get her on the road.

Motor is a little dirty. I need to detail that but, i'm really liking it.

Very first thing on the list is the
-Trans rebuild, then
-Exhaust
-Miro 111's or some VMR's
-LED tails
-Tint
-Lowering Springs
-Trunk Fin
-Intake, Maybe

then we'll see where to go from there. This is more going to be my daily :) while i work on the Supra.

Manual swap. Those transmissions are garbage I could even see your rebuilt transmission going again while you own the car.

DANG! all you mani guys... YES i would love to swap in a mani, but this will also be 50% of the time my wife driving this car with the baby in the back. She doesnt like to and basically WONT drive a mani. :( thus the reason i'm right now planning on rebuilding. I will talk to her and see if i cant convince her to let me put a mani in it. so we'll see.

EDIT: ohh and btw how much would a mani swap be cause like i posted earlier, i can get the trans rebuilt for a pretty darn good deal.

Looks good Doug! Nice to see another Utah county MG'r on here since it seems so many are jumping ship. Love the look of those wheels on the 4.2. Pretty much the only way those look good is with the wider fenders and side skirts. Good luck with the rebuild and let me know if you need a hand!

Thanks Nick, I DEFINITELY would take you up on the offer but I'm gonna run the A6 up to Oregon to my parents place to work on it. Happy to wrench anytime though. Whether it be the supra or the A6.

A6 started work of pulling her apart for the trans rebuild. A little revving fun with the exhaust off and GoPro

I'm excited to see the tranny rebuild process - where did you get a 'kit' from? I'd love an S8 if I wasn't so afraid of the trans, but $550 isn't half bad...

When you do your teardown, pay special attention to the drums that hold the clutches, specifically the snap ring grooves, these tend to crack on 5HP24FLA´s as well as the 5HP19FLA. C is usually never the issue, it is the E pack, but check them all thoroughly. Also, be advised there are drums from other applications that will fit and contain more clutches (for more torque capacity) I just don't know the specific application off the top of my head. This still will not mitigate cracks where the snap ring seats, but will allow for more positive engagement and longer life.

I wouldn't worry too much about the 5HP24 trans. Mine has 177k on it. I've done regular fluid changes on it and it still shifts nicely. I'm due again for another trans fluid and timing belt service...ugh.

123Quattro is correct. The 5HP24FLA is a decent transmission when it is not subjected to an over abundance of torque, or a goofy driver, but they do fail, as this one has, I was just mentioning some things to look at while you are in there, as well as some possible improvements. The true weak point for this transmission in a stock role is not the trans itself, but the TCU which tends to get a bit crazy with its learning feature, and will do the right things at the wrong times if driven erratically. All in all, when the trans is done, fill it with pentosin, drive it like a normal human being, and it will serve you well. Just don't believe the lifetime fill BS.

I change the fluid/filter in mine every 40k. I talked to a ZF engineer a while ago. He said the biggest thing to do to make it last longer was not do tiptronic downshifts off throttle.

Good advice, less slippage that way. Just leave it in D and let it do its thing.

^^^^^ ALL great info guys. Thanks. As i've seen other tear downs looking at the clutch drums was one of the things i was gonna take a close look at. ive seen pics of others that have failed. Pentosin is all i would ever put in the trans. and its gonna be more of a DD and family car. Once in a while i'm sure i'll get on it and have some fun, but nothing to the point where i feel i'll need to be slamming the gears in tiptronic.

SO....

I got a question for you transmission guys.

What is the difference between the 01V, and the 01L ?

My transmission is a 5hp24 FBC. i definitely wanna make sure i'm purchasing the right parts.
