TC's Swingin 4000

Hello men. Stoked to find the Pad!

Thought I would share my project in hopes to get some ideas and Help completing it. Been driving MK1's since high school 87. Still have a couple but wanted something more comfortable and roomy and still true to my roots and the 4000cs has always been a beautiful car to me. Hoping to make this a mild daily driven street car.

I bought the car sight unseen from an Audiworld ad. It was a non runner and the owner had gotten it on trade that way and had no interest in it. He was told it had been a turbo car at one time. had no idea what it needed to run. So I took a chance. Had it picked up on transport and brought to me here just South of Knoxvile TN.
Image

Rolled it in the garage to see what gives. After checking the car over I was pleased with my purchase. A few bumps and scratches aside it was better than expected and the interior is near perfect. Everything worked except the driver window. Typical. Attempted to start it and it just turned over but no start. Popped the fuse panel and seen the fuel management fuses were missing. Put them in and fuel spray everywhere from the CIS fuel head. Well long story short. I had several fuel heads and after mix matching a bunch of units the car ran Great!

I'm lucky enough to have a 3 acre grass field to do all my test drives. AKA (field bomb!) It was snow and mud and it was FuN! My son got his 5000 turbo out there too. I built it for him for graduation. Good kid.

I noticed during the FuN! that the shifter of the 4000 was a bit difficult to get 2nd. I figured shifter bushings. :idunno: Still haven't had it out on the street yet tho. Because the front tires are 70's and rears are 60's. The fronts are matching and half worn out. The rears are near slick. Hmmm... Starting to wonder now. I have a few sets of stock wheels but non with tires and I don't want to just throw a set of tires so I wait to drive the car on pavement till I get proper wheels. Seemed like the smart thing to do.

I got Lucky again! Found a set of 16" OZ Vega wheels on FB. They were already split and the bolts were missing. Knowing nothing really about multi piece wheels except they look Incredible! The missing bolts didn't discourage me. Buy Em NOW!
Image

I ordered a set of Falken Zeik tires the same day and they both show up here the same day! Only problem is I ordered 16" tires. Yes 16. Just like the wheels were sold to me. And to the sellers defense. If you measure the wheel from outer lip to lip it is 16. :wtf: Send the tires back and get 15". Start working on the wheels.
Image
Image

Wet sanded the lips starting with 400 and went to 1000. Polished the lips. I'm a tile setter by trade and I use a side grinder and a diamond blade to cut tile. Just made sense to get buff pads to fit the grinder.

Damn! Wheel bolts are Spendy!

I struggled with color choices. After fully bead blasting the centers and parts this is what I did.

Finally time to Drive! :drive: Where else then Deals Gap. I ride sport bike or supermoto there a couple days a week. It's my back yard stomping ground. It was a wet day. Perfect! Did I mention how lucky I am? :D

Well the shifter was still notchy even tho the bushings all checked out. Then the day after the above pic was taken I was driving with my wife for the first time in the car. Going to Sunday brunch to meet some friends it happened. Cruising about 50 and all of a sudden an awful noise and the car started to squat hard and nearly skid to a stop. :o I pushed the clutch in and coasted to the side of the road. Attempt to select a gear but when I let out on the clutch the car just squats. Put it in neutral and I got 2nd gear. Ease it back to the house in 2nd via back roads. Alcoa's Finest following me almost the whole way. :hide:

Got it home. Checked it out and it's definitely the trans. Decided since I have a 53k mile 83 5000 turbo that runs Awesome with a bad auto trans I would swap the 5k motor and my spare 016 in the 4000. This is where I'm at now. Motor and trans completely installed. All fuel and water lines installed. The motor turns over with the key. I have the harness from the 83 5000 stripped down to the essentials ( I think. Have not removed the 4k harness and was hoping to leave it and just install the wiring needed for the fuel and dizzy management from the 5k. I have a 4k Bently and I have an early 5k Bently on the way. Only problem is when I try to follow the schematic I get tunnel vision and black out. :D

At this point I could Really use some help. I have the 83 5000 harness stripped down to just the necessities. I would like to just hook up what's needed to the fuse panel etc. It's really only about 20 wires and a couple of relays need power.

Big question. If you separated all the wires out of the 83 5k harness what wires do I need? And where do they all hook up. LoL!

:ty:

Check out sjmauto's site http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/trouble_s ... inout.html make sure you have the right mac version , super useful, when i was doing my first swap i was like whoa nice lol.

For the 5k ecu + harness, I think you just need ignition power one a wire or two that goes to constant power when key is on while cranking, grounds, fuel pump relay wire, rpm to tach, there's also info there for the isv double relay pins, iirc you'll need to wire those separately from harness to the coolant temp sensor and might have to add some power too. Also make sure to get a flywheel with a pin for the tdc crank sensor.

Welcome! Glad to see you found your way over here!

Haha, I know I've said this like 20 times before, but we really should meet up sometime. As soon as my 200's back on the road again, I'd love to help out with the wiring (if you still need it). It seems I'm in the minority, but I'd take schematics and wiring over mechanical work any day.

I will see what I can dig up in the books and alldata. WIth the MAC-11 ecu, I only had to splice in about 4 wires. 2 were power, 1 was for the fuel pump ground, one was for the cold start injector, and I think a couple grounds. IDK. Everything is labelled under the dash on mine still as I havent ripped the stock red harness out yet for VEMS. Yours should not be that much different (I'd think).

Looks like I'm gonna just sell or scrap this project.

I've been trying for 2 straight days to figure out the wiring. Martin has tried to help me via email. I just can not figure it out. I have the whole car swapped except the exhaust connected and the 4-5 wires needed to make it run. I've made 0 head way and I just do not have the knowledge to figure it out.

This seems like the perfect opportunity for you gain some motivation and move forward; pull the old harness and mail it to this fine gentleman already!

Yeah, Kevin is a smart dude, he'll get it figured out for you.

Completely exhausted today. My brain feels like leather jello. Stayed in the garage till 2:30am. Triple checked every connection. I have the fuel running but no spark. But i haven't removed the original ecu or harness. Maybe something in there is cutting the power to the coil?

Would be awesome if Kevin has time to sort me out. I'm spent...

I also just realized that he has a completely different ECM setup :-/

Thanks to Marti Pajak coaching me through the wiring. I have it running smooth! Still need to wire in the cold start injector. Was also thinking about adding an injector as there are 2 nice size ports. 1 on the throttle body and 1 just behind the throttle body. Anyone know of a small electrical injector that will make a good candidate for extra fuel if I turn the boost up?

I would suggest you manually wire in a ground switch to the cold start injector as well for those hard startups you may encounter
