Sketchy and fun are two adjectives that definitely apply. ;)

dana wrote:was that just 1st?

im scared for your life and jealous as well. Imaging getting into the powerband in 3rd? yipes

Yep, just 1st gear so far and only up to about 6k rpm. It seems to come on to the pipe about 5k rpm and the power is just monstrous. There should be no problem doing wheelies in 3rd once I get it dialed in better.

So yeah... probably going to die.

Took it out to a more rural area today for two more rounds of testing and tweaking.

First off- it fits in the back of the Subaru 8-)

Image

Second, I officially have a full hour of ride-time in on it

Image[/url]

I fixed the alignment before the first round of testing, which helped a bit but the thing was still super squirly. I figured this was due to the motion ratio on the steering being made for tight maneuvering at low speed, not high speed stability, so I brought it home and modified the steering ratio.

Second round of testing was soooooooo much better. It can (somewhat) comfortably be driven at low (2-3k) rpm in 5th, which I'm estimating is about 30 mph.

Here is the summarized test report:
- WHEELIES IN 4TH!!!!!!!!! Seriously.
-Too scared to try in 5th.
-Surprisingly easy to drive on two wheels (leaning to the side)
-Pipe comes on at ~5,600 rpm, and it's like a light switch. As soon as it hits the front wheels jump into the air. Somewhat terrifying.
-The oilite bushings I used in the steering knuckles are not up to the task. There is a TON of play in them now. I don't thing they like the impact of the front wheels coming down.
-I managed to not die!!

That is all for now. :drive:

Lol... yeah... it's already at ~1.5lb/HP (assuming full power, which it definitely doesn't have given the the carb is not tuned to the motor or the pipe.... so maybe 3 lb/HP right now). I plugged some numbers into my gearing spreadsheet, and so far I have had it up to about 40 mph ( or maybe a bit higher). Hopefully more videos to come this weekend.

I'm just going to leave this here.....

Replaced the the bushings on the steering knuckles with some beefier ones today, and took it out to test the wheelie bars. Verdict: SUCCESS.
The bars are freaking brilliant; no more fear of going over backwards. On a few of the more spirited ones I even got the rear wheels off the ground and didn't go over.

2nd gear wheelies are rather violent with the power band on this thing, so this is pretty much all 3rd gear keeping it under the 6k RPM where the pipe comes on and power gets absurd.

Did i mention it is really easy to drive on two side wheels? it's really easy to drive on two wheels.

Here is a small sampling of today's fun:

Up next: fitting all the body work and going out to have some fun 8-) :drive:

Edit: fixed the choppy video

Super sketchy! Haha. That's unreasonably cool.

Now if only you could go straight from riding on two wheels to a one wheel wheelie! That'd really be impressive :D

Re: 80 MPH mobility scooter: cleaning it all up

With the scooter tested and the bugs mostly all worked out I decided it was time for paint, so I stripped it down to the bare frame, cleaned it all up with scotch-brite and acetone to prep for paint, then set us my little "meth lab" in the garage to hang and paint all the steel bits. Used Rustoleum primer & black enamel.

Image

The meth lab, as my wife so nicely calls it

Image

The clutch has been locked up since I put this thing together and 2 hours of riding it around with it tied open had not broken it free, so I split the case to do it manually before putting the motor back in. Made a nice discovery: it has a brand new clutch in it, completely unused. I'm guessing whoever had the bike before and took it apart put this in before abandoning their bike project. Clutch discs where stuck together from sitting for so long, which is not uncommon. Pulled all the discs free, cleaned them up, reassembled the motor, and did an oil change.

Image

Back together!

Did I mention I got a mask and took it out on Halloween? I kept riding up really slow to groups of kids out trick-or-treating, waving at them, then BRAAAAP!!!! as I wheelie away  :drive:
