why not do with Tim did and actually LOWER the subframe with extended bushings? If I remember right, Dave made him a set and might a few extras laying around. But then again, I dont know if you want aluminum bushings

Use a 1.8t sump and pick up. Also use the oil filter housing from it aswell

Nice project here !

Worked a bit on AHU engine (for Vanagon T3 swap).
"Low range" gearbox will not be a pain as the engine will be a bit "short" on a 90Q.

Why not considering modding the engine for a TDI-M spec ?
With injection pump from 1.9TD, turbo from 1.6TD and slighty bigger injectors (can't recall the engine it's from, 110hp TDI maybe), that's 120whp+ easily gained, which is much more confortable I guess ;)

In case you're interested, I could find the full setup ;)

I had originally planned on doing the MTDI. I decided to keep it eTDI because I have all of the electronics to do it and I kind of like the process of wiring a swapped engine .its a fun challenge. Also the eTDI runs and starts so nice and smooth, and I think it is a step backwards to go back to a manual pump. I think its all a matter of personal preference, people argue eTDI vs mTDI all day long.

yes, this is the solution I have found. Use any pan and pickup from a longitudinal vw/audi 4 cylinder with the AEB cooler/filter mount. Excellent. This is why i wanted to get the engine in the bay and start finding these little details.

If you need B5 1.8t parts let me know, the yard here is full of them and stuff is usually pretty cheap. And I've got a jacket with big pockets ;)

Yes..yes he does. Kind of funny the things I have seen pulled out of those pockets

sort of like my tool box that perfectly fits 7a heads. The trick is carrying it in and pretending it actually weights 80 lbs when it only weighs 10.

Ok I see your point and I agree for the step backward, that was just curiosity ;) In a way I would rather see your project going eTDI in case your furthers plans are about enhancing it, because I've never seen the process behind !

i certainly do plan to at least have the ecu tuned and use larger injectors to get to the limit of the stock turbo. I also would like to have the ecu tuned to get rid of the MAF and EGR system

....and the smartest man of the day award goes to this man. Don't know how I forgot that I think it's the exact same thing people do with 3A's to put them in foxes... Duh :hammer:

Dana is the king of 7A junkyard heads, I can't lay claim to being the best. I'm at a disadvantage because they search your tool boxes/bags most of the time here and they're pretty good at finding things, ask me how I know :shame:

Winter is the best junkyard time for me. Gotta layer up when its cold out.

ahh yes, when i lived 5 minutes from the junkyard and could sense when a fresh 20v 90 was delivered. Yoink! two heads per trip, and pay for one. Perfect.

trial fit #2. AEB oil pan, filter mount and starter allowed it the engine and trans to actually bolt together for the first time!

AEB starter

I am planning on making a mount that replaces this one and grabs the factory audi rubber chassis side mount
Image

AEB oil filter mount is key

AEB oil pan

exciting bonus, a little tweaking of the audi power steering pressure line and it fits the TDI pump!!
Image

had to twist this coil a bit to get the PS line to fit.

actually bolted in this time.

The aeb starter might not have enough juice. I tried using an AAN starter on my alh swap and it could barely turn over the engine. So I used a starter from a passat TDI. I think. I dunno it's in my thread in my sig

aeb starter was mostly for mockup, that one if from a flooded car, so it doesnt work anyway. I assume i will need to find a tdi starter as you say.

busted some more out today. Going to the dominican for a week, so i wanted to make some more progress before i peaced out.

i had this crappy winch plate that i took off my 4runner that i cannibalized for the plate.

high tech bolt pattern matching

measuring for back spacers

mounts completed

drivers side mount

passenger side mount, going to add some gusseting to this one.

final driveline angle. seems good, but the oil cap hits the hood. Might need to find a way to lower that.

not too much interesting to report. Spend some time traveling in the Dominican, and that was awesome. Now I'm back to deal with all the pain-in-the-assery that is the northeast in the winter. Why did I leave the place that was 88 degrees every day, beers were $1, food was $2 and women treat American gringos like rock stars?

Oh well, back to the fun. The motor is out for the final time to be cleaned up, resealed and then hopefully installed permanently.

I decided to actually drop some coin on a real clutch that will hopefully put up with any amount of torque I can realistically get out of the TDI. We all know that keeping this thing on the stock turbo will be hard for me. I ordered up a clutchnet stage 3, which should be able to handle 375ft/lbs but is still full faced and hopefully has good manners. I really don't like how puck clutches drive.

That little oil cap extension just twisted off and the cap can be installed flat on the valve cover. Easy enough fix!

Probably because you're so excited to drive my 5k back to VT from Carlisle. I understand, I'd be excited too.

What with the large population of cougars you claim to have around your mountain I doubt that was a factor.
