jim, you should find an OEM audi airbox to modify and fit over in the pass. side just for smog. something more to add to your cars lacking visual credentials. and also put a charcoal cannister back in where it's supposed to go, they have to look for that in the inspection.

After hanging around another GT35R car last night...I imagine it might just inhale the entirety of any airbox put around it.

Looking good D!

ok, wiring up a 3B is really easy for the 4kq. there's only 4 wires that need to be hooked up to get power to the ECU, 02 sensor, and ground.

first off these two...
Image

are hooked up to key on +12v. they power the fuses for the ecu and 02 sensor, etc.
Image
fuse #27 on the far right has a red wire, that red wire goes to the yellow plug, from the yellow plug, i don't care :P it just needs to be hooked up to +12v all the time, not just key on. i believe this is the wire that keith said is for the ecu memory.
Image

this is.... ground :P very important ;)
Image

i pulled the bolts out and cleaned and siliconed them up, let it set for a few hours, and they still leak :frustrated:
Image

so, i guess i'm done :P NOT plenty left...

Still lookin good! keep it up Derek. You are my inspiration. Once I get my coupe the way I want for DD I'm gonna have to start on a 4KQ

it's not the actual extension that's leaking, it's the bolt threads. the oil comes out at the bolt head, not through the seam of the two pieces.

Gasket the bolts?
derracuda

Post by derracuda »

yeah, i'm gonna try some white thread sealing tape next cause it's quick and easy. if that doesn't work, then my friend said he can get me some stuff called pro-seal that they use on helicopters for sealing bolts that go into engine and transmission cases where oil lives.

Permatex Aviation "form a gasket" is the stuff you need.
Comes with a little brush and is available at any parts store. :-)

GET ER DONE

So close! Will it be done in time for you to drive it back home this weekend?

nah, it won't be done. i've had another uh.. setback. the pan extension bolts were still leaking, so i got it on the hoist this morning so i could take the stupid thing off and find out what's going on. well.... it's cracked. no biggie, right? right, just silicone it up like so...
Image

then install. well, no. not when the corner decides that it wishes to live it's own life seperate from the already extended family...
Image
Image

so yeah. luckily i had a spare oil pan here that i took the extension off of, cleaned, and painted. it's drying now. it won't be cured, but i can at least put it on and move on from that.

i also got the clutch slave hooked up and bled. since i switched to the torsen 016, it uses the newer style clutch slave and i hadn't had a chance to hook it up yet. i did however get a metal ring welded into my block snubber mount for a tight fit and painted and installed as well as the 20v crank pulley cleaned, painted, and installed.
Image

now for a bit of a sweating moment... or two. when i started the motor up yesterday, i had no coolant in it, therefore didn't run it for very long. just wanted to hear it run. when i did so, the oil pressure buzzer was going off. i figured bah, i probably had the wires mixed up. sooo this morning when i took the oil filter off to get the oil pan extension off... the filter was dry :o oh snap! that's no good. so after a bit of checking around, seems i got the oil pump check valve plunger and spring in backwards, and no oil pressure :frustrated: . the optimistic view is that #1. i liberally coated everything with assembly lube. #2. when i filled it with oil, i litterally dumped it in causing a lake in the upper end of the engine covering the cam caps as i could see in. #3. when i had the extension off the pan, there's oil that has been splashed around. and #4. it only idled for 2 minutes tops.

when i pulled the oil filter and saw it was empty, and then found the plunger in backwards, i was literally sweating... while standing inside the shop, during the morning and it's not hot. i'm really hoping that it will be ok, but if i have no oil pressure or abnormally low pressure, i'll know what i gotta do. this is the first real engine build i've done by myself, from the bottom up. i've seen it done lots of times, i've had all other aspects of the engine apart before, but made a simple, yet possibly detrimental and expensive mistake to go in my mental "don't ever do that again" file. you're probably snickering right now, but ya know, mistakes happen and it's better to make it known you screwed up and fix it, then to hide it and have lots of dirt under your carpet :) it's really just time and $$ if something's crapped out.

i should have the pan section back on tonight and oil in it, then hook up a pressure gauge and crank til i got oil pressure. mega crossing fingers right now :P

hey darin, could you be extremely something right now for me? i don't have the energy :P and put it in yout project thread title too, please :P (sorry, that thought popped in my head and made me lol)

Bummed to hear about all of this. I really hope there is minimal to zero ramifications due to all of this. Good luck.

I usually put extreme titles in my project post to draw attention to it and because changing it is a unique way of doing it. I'm usually not nearly as worked up as my typing would presume.

But just for you Derek, I am EXTREMELY hoping your engine will be just fine. :-)

Arnt you happy you bought those connecting rod and mains from Javad now?The engine is fine...worst case scenario is the connecting rod bearings got a little scored.
Dont sweat it.

haha, thanks Darin :D

the crank was polished and the bearings are the coated ones 034 sells, so if she doesn't wet the bed and holds up for a long time to come, i'll be 100% behind them for "extreme" duty :P

Derek, I'm a total wreck over this. :curses: and I would never laugh at you.. (well maybe once in a while, but not now).

Let me tell you an inspiring story about my coupe. You saw her just last weekend.

One day about 2 months ago, I added a quart of oil and failed to put the cap back on. :o  I drove the car about oh, 50 miles. It was smoking bad. I thought bah, it's just the oil I spilled on the motor burning off. I spilled alot. I was in a hurry. :bashtard:

Stopped for some food at a Greasy Bell, TM. Came back out to the car and started her. Oh, how her lifters were a tappin'. :( I look at the oil pressure guage and, NO oil pressure! :curses: :wtf: . I open the hood and holy shit theres the oil cap just where I left it on the valve cover. I check the oil and the dipstick is bare. Oh no!!! :slap: I go get three quarts of way over priced oil and end up needing them ALL to fill the oilpan to the proper mark on the dipstick. I'm thinking I'm totally Boned at this point.
I started her up and crossed my fingers. Oil pressure right away, but lifters making so much noise I thought the head was gonna fly off. I sit there for about 5 minutes at idle and what do you know the can of screws shaking under the hood quieted down to normal engine idle. I still have about 20-25 PSI at idle when warm. YAY! Been driving her ever since.

I got my fingers crossed for ya that you did minimal damage to her.

Bottom line: I think the Audi I5's are one of the most bullet proof engines out there unless you go at them with a .44 auto mag or .454 Casul.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I made a similar mistake on a motor I fully rebuilt 15 years ago. It was my wife's(girlfriend back then) 340 in her 71 Duster. It turned out to be a healthy 12 sec car. We sold the motor to another guy who is still running it to this day. Hasn't been rebuilt, but did get a better set of heads about 5 years ago. I was in disbeleif, must have had that thing running for 5-10 minutes total!

You'll be fine!
