What did I drive it at - 32? 34 psi? It was fast enough then to have Hank grabbing for the oh-shi*t handles. I had Dick Greenwold grabbing his heart lol But 42 psi??

What time was that on Saturday? I think Nevada shifted its geological coordinates and moved Utah. I felt it.

Yeah, you got a dose at 33psi Sean. It couldn't hold 42psi past 6000 rpm, but it didn't matter, as the torque had already done it's thing. The logs showed it was tapering to 30psi by 8000. IMO, it was the most brutal street setup that didn't require solid lifters and custom cams.

I have yet to pull the rest of the motor, but reading around, this may have just been a good ol fashion rod failure. The bolts are sheared, but they look like they were just sheared when the bent rod collided with the skirt of the cylinder by the oil squirters. If my butt dyno is calibrated correctly with the past dyno sheets and configurations, I think this motor was approaching 140wtq per rod, and that is about where the smaller neck of the scats has shown to be a limit. I built this motor before I had the bigger necked 160mm rods produced for my own kits, and we rate those beefier rods at 200ft/lbs per rod. These Scats have significantly smaller necks and if you take a 25% drivetrain of 140wtq, 190ft/lbs is a lot to ask of them.

Oh well! Good news is that 4 pistons and rods appear to have survived the ordeal. I got lucky it was #5, as it isolated the distruction to the back of the motor.. I am going to measure everything more in the coming days, but I think these rods and pistons will end up in a mean 2.1L 16vt out east!

After the rods and pistons are out give the crank a spin.
A big hit like that may have bent the crank. It will look fine,
but may be bent. Actually your block is probably twisted
from the ventilation. A machine shop can tell you for sure.

oh, I don't plan on using the crank for anything in the future. I will check the rods extensively before selling anything. I did compare the piston height at TDC to the blueprint of when I built the motor on the 4 cylinders, including the rock minimum and max. They are all within .0015" of what I measured when I built te thing, and that can be just cylinder wear/ piston wear that allows for slightly more rock. If the rods were squished, the piston would not be a mean .024" out of the block. If they were bent at all, they would not be that high out of the block. Even if the crank was bent, it is unlikely you would see matched blueprint specs before and after.

Ze key to the easy swap, the not so easy oil pan.

Motivation is a wonderful thing :) I can't wait for this motor to propel the URQ down the road! It is going to rip!

Hank, that is sweet. How did you draw that? Just measure the crap out of that gasket? I wanna come design stuff with you at Iroz Motorsport.

Awesome! Going to get a place to cast it?

Alex, my neighbor with a 944 was just over asking me if it would fit in his car!! We need to talk! No casting, just a trick sheetmetal job.

Chris, no gaskets on the new VAG stuff, so it was a lot of tracing with lead on paper, transfering over via scanner, and scaling drawings. Remember in school when you would draw for 16-18 hours strait and have a hard time seeing the road on teh way home from school? Yep! I wish I had a 3d scanner, that would have made life easier.

So what is that gasket-looking thing then?

That's the modeled oil pan flange prototyped in wood.

For cost-sensitive buyers, MDF is offered as material choice...with the option of being brazed together with Titebond.

All the measurements I made sure make it seem like it wouldn't be too hard or different from the Audi swap. Use his car as the prototype and I'll buy a kit when it's figured out! :D

Damn,

Sorry to see you grenaded the engine Hank !!.........do you think 42 psi was enough!!!! :-)

I can't even begin to imagine how that thing went.......crazy for sure.

I'm looking forward to the new engine going in your urq.......should be interesting for sure.

Cheers,
