Yea Aaron, the ride today makes me want more hp/boost and a 20vt. I'll get mine together eventually. It handled pretty well for a 30yr old car on the lowered H&Rs and the Spax dampers. Fairly stiff and sometimes felt like it could use some more travel, but all in all a pretty decent ride and not a lot of roll in the corners. I was taking alot of those posted 45mph curves at +70mph and more when I didn't have a camera in one hand. :o

That looks great John... and sounds great. So do you have a "treatment end point" decided so you can finish His UrQ? I can see you polishing this for a long time

Yea I do...when Renee decides it's so nice that she wants to take ownership. NOT I don't know, but I think that I need to get the obvious bugs worked out and maybe a trip up your way to put some paint on it. I don't even mind the paint so much, but I can't stand the dings, nicks, and scratches all over. The pisser is that it's obvious that most of them look to have been picked up in the auction yards. I may have to take a bit of a break to work up some brownie points again before diving into my Urq.

Just be glad (knock on wood) you aren't chasing a 4000 rpm cut out.

Do you think the turbine isn't quite the right size for that housing you substituted and its not wanting to build boost?

It could be I suppose, but they looked identical. Does anyone know if there is a difference between the oil only K26 hotside housing VS the water cooled K26 hotside? I used the hotside housing off of an MC K26 with the center section and coldside housing of the oil only Urq K26. I've got another vid that I took on the way to work pulling ~110mph uphill on the 93 and still only about where the needle was today at charlston. It should have been making whatever it possibly could with that kind of load.

If I recall correctly my 87 5000s owners manual said the light was to remind the owner to take it to be checked by a Audi tech to make sure the car was operating normally... my mechanic said it was so they could have steady revenue in their service garages...

You better get it done. The problem is that they never end as far as things to do!! I must say, however, that getting it running helps boost a guy to do the little things.

Yea, this is just the stock center section that has been straight piped through the resonator with the CAC end piece. The Cat is still in place though. I thought about straight piping through the cat also, but it sounds pretty decent as it is and I still have to get it smogged. So CAC is made in Luxembourg....good to know.

I checked when I was at the parking lot, but couldn't see it tucked way down between the alternator, intercooler, and turbo. They really stuffed a bunch of crap into a small area in these cars. You are right though to think that I missed taking it for a popped hose.

That is what I think also.....a way to get a service call. On a good note I reset it yesterday and I not longer have an o2 light on. I think that is the easiest emissions light that I have ever fixed. I like it!!

Where did you get the SPAX shocks at? Direct order from England? :?

John, here is the link to the hood rod clip. It's only 89 cents.

You should order a hood release cable while your at it. At $7.87 it's a steal.

The whole setup with the H&Rs and Spax shocks came with my hotrod Urq when I bought it from Sean. He may know where he got them. They were brand new and had never been run to speak of. I was just going to toss the coils when I decided to go coilover on His Urq, but they were still hanging out in the garage. I had my reservation as to whether or not the Spax would be enough damper for the 350lb/400lb coils that I have for my coilovers anyway and wasn't sure I wanted to use them with the coilovers. I probably would have just to save money, but this way they are being used and are probably better matched for the spring rate. Looking at the Spax website they look to be an HD type damper, but not their top of the line fully adjustable line. I will probably go with a set of Konis now for the coilovers on the built Urq.

Thanks Greg, I think I'll do just that. Wish I would have known a few days ago as I just opened a package from autohausaz today that I ordered fuel filters and a few other things early in the week. While placing the order I had to order two filters to get it over $50 for free shipping. Oh well.

Besides how did you know that I accidently cut through my hood release cable when cutting out some rust in the hotrod Urq.

I didn't know that you cut your cable, but I do know that a few years ago everyone said that they were obsolete and couldn't be found. Here is something else that I forgot to mention.

It's not listed under the Audi because it's a BMW part.

Do you know for sure that it will work on the Urq? I know that the fix for the 5ktq center carrier bearing was to use a BMW part, but I hadn't heard that with the Urq.

I haven't needed to install mine yet, but I've held it next to the original and it looks exactly the same. It even has a reputable bearing inside (INA brand).

I thought for sure that I was going to have to change mine out, but the more I drive it the less it makes noise. I guess I'm just working the rust out of it. LOL I wouldn't mind picking one up though as there isn't much in life that if you ignore it .... it will go away.

By the way are you working nights? You are up pretty late to just be browsing MG.

Wow John,

Sure looks great. It looks like it was a rewarding drive. To bad you didn't bring the car
to the Vegas meet. Your were soooooooooo close.

Congratulations !!!!!!!

It's a *direct* replacement for the "small' Audi hanger bearing. (THe 5000 hanger bearing is different, and as far as I know, there is no direct replacement)

While in there to change the hanger bearing, you should consider changing the u-joint also..

Easy, but irritating... I think in my 5k it came back on after 3000 miles... maybe it was 5000

When I replaced the carrier bearing in the 5ktq with the BMW bearing I had to weld it to a fabbed bracket that mimicked the original bracket. The bearing itself worked, but the bracket wouldn't fit. It's good to know that this part # is a direct replacement for the Urq.

I guess I should have followed your link to read about the u-joint, but is it the Suzuki U-joint that some people have used to replace the Urq's? You are right in that as long as you are cleaning up the prop shaft and have to split the two shafts to get the new bearing on, it would be a good time to replace the u-joint. Thanks for the links.

I went back and saw in you link that it was indeed the Suzuki U-joint from audifans. Thanks again.

Yea Craig, I was as close as what it would take to tighten a hose clamp. :( Oh well at least I made it to the meet and greet even though I had to be towed from the corner turning into the hotel to the parking lot. It was a bit embarrassing, but if you have owned old audis I think it's pretty safe to say that everyone has been there at some point. I have to say I got a lot of attention being towed behind Brent's Coupe quattro. Maybe not as much attention as Hank got when he arrived at Audi of Henderson spinning all 4 tire from the light to the entrance. LOL

As far as rewarding goes it was a good feeling getting the car out for the first real drive and having it do as well as it did. I now have another long list of things to fix or look into. It was really rewarding to fill the tank up with gas, beat the car in the mountains, drive to work a couple of days and still pull into the gas station today putting 7.6gals of gas in for a 217mile trip. That is almost 30mpg after driving pretty hard. I'm liking this car more and more. It just has character!!

Here is a vid from the first drive to work to show that I wasn't just babying it.

I can't wait to get home and get a ride in it...

We should trace the rubber hose to the factory boost gauge to make sure it's not rotted out. It's one thing to not see boost on the gauge, but you aren't seeing any real vacuum upon deceleration either.

While you are in there, maybe check that the ECU is seeing manifold action too?

Nothing better than toasting your motor because the ECU doesn't know the real situation at the motor end of things.. :frustrated:
