Had a shitty day today so I thought this was the perfect moment to drill the 80 :D

I triple checked the measures and ...

... Voilàààà

I love it !

Update :

Found a 215mm QH clutch after 1.5 year of search ... in Lithuania (for ~70€ shipped lol)

Previous one had 260k km (161k miles) + slipped a lot because of oil leak

New crankshaft seal + oil sump (old one was bent) + oil sump seal

Back to business

Also did replace the radiator for an OEM one ... but did an upgrade to the mk1 fan which is quite sh***y

Got myself an Audi 100 2.2L N/A 2 speed fan and 2 speed type thermoswitch (can't find the values anymore, but not the C3/C4 type, it gets triggered ~2°C sooner)

Image

To get an idea, lowest speed of the 44's fan is just a little slower than the OEM mk1 fan ... so definitely a failsafe here to have a secondary speed (and having the 1st one run a bit sooner).

Vid of the "thing" :

Cool fact about the Mk1 B2, is that "command" & "power" are on the same wire, no relay here, so I just had to add one wire

Since then car is still running great, I still love the carb life.

Slight update, by the end of august, like every year I went to the annual meeting near from Switzerland.

To give you guys an idea of the scenery and the roads :

Appealing isn't it ? :D

The 80 never was fully operationnal until then for the full experience (even tho I went there 3 times with this one already), but this time was the one. Brakes, Suspension, Shorter gearbox ... just the engine remained untouched (with ~200k miles).

Needless to say that was THE testdrive to check how operational the whole thing was ... and well, everything went awesome.

Beated the sh*t out of it, full throttle all the time (N/A life  ), I even smoked* a (stock) URQ on the way up lol
* : even litterally lol, out of an hairpin, spinning the inner wheel @fullthrottle, I found out the rev limiter on my rotor was "fictive" lol
Who said N/A 20v couldn't go up to 7500rpm ? (at the expense of a noice blue smoke screen coming through the exhaust :D :D :D )

Anyways, the old junk was a blast, engine proved strong for the whole 3 days of abuse, I just think that considering the heat wave during those days + 15mn uphill sessions + driveitlikeyoustoleit.exe running in the background ( :D ), I may need an oil cooler to avoid breaking something. Water temp went 210/220°F (I have no oil temp), so I assume oil temp was like 270°F+

On the plus side, just right after a "strong session", @900rpm, oil pressure remained normal (~30psi).

Back in the "camp", we did a compression check on the engine "just to see",
174psi
181psi
178psi
175psi
174psi

I'm very pleased with that one, this old 1.9L 5 banger isn't to be opened yet apparently 8-)

Just right after that, I went on a small trip to Brussels to visit friend, and came back home.

Image

~1250 miles trip, ~24 hours behind the driving wheel, that was truly awesome ... can't wait to do the same next year ! :P

I would kill to take such an impressive road trip in a classic Audi.

;) Hehe, I love to drive this one but to be fair, mk1 B2 are way less confy than mk2 B2 (I don't even dare to mention B3/4 or C3/4), even more on the highway :
- less noise insulation
- stiffer commands (clutch, accelerator, gearbox linkage)
- brick-like aerodynamics (sounds stupid but past 80 mph, you start to feel it and hear it).

and in addition

- the lower gearbox (highway speed limit is 81 mph here, which corresponds to 3850 rpm IIRC)
- the "bit too reactive" steering (I may need AK Motorsport top mounts to reduce front camber and a smaller driving wheel, OEM one is the same as "non power steering" wheels)

adds to this, not that I care to much about confort, but this is a bit more "exhausting" on long drives (definitely not a highway cruiser) ;)

But yeah, if only I didn't fear about breaking it (I'm mostly affraid of other people), I'd daily this car every day ! On small roads this is a perfect tool ! ;)

It's been ages since I updated this post yet nothing much happened in my garage until recently, I've been working on a few side projects but nothing major on my cars ... Until recently !

A few words about the B2 which is still running like a charm. I'm starting to get rust issues here and there and I guess bodywork will become inevitable on the long term. On the plus side, car's been ultra reliable since then and it's still a blast to floor it on small roads. :D

So yeah, major stuff came in for the Avant which sat in my garage since around 2016. The original CIS-E was giving me trouble and after a 90% successful attempt to convert it to regular CIS from a 2.2 engine (car was running and almost dialed in, only the breather hose and a bunch of small stuff like that remained "to be done" at the time) ... I gave up (lack of motivation I guess).

Motivation kicked back in when I thought about having the car running on E85 (which is more 2 times cheaper in here than regular 98 Octane), motivating me to have the car running as a comfy cruiser, with a decent sound ... and as a (nearly) full time daily driver.

Thing is, Kjet & E85 weren't going along, mostly because of insufficient OEM injector flow and as I always wanted to dive into EFI "stuff", I finally decided to do a conversion on the car.

With few experience whatsoever aside from reading about EFI here and there, before I even realized I did it, got this in the mail :D

And after a bunch of wiring, plumbing and nooby-mapping, this was happening

I then realized that mapping with a narrowband lambda was a no go so I ended up ordering a few Zeitronix products to help me and after merely and hour of having a friend driving my car, laptop on my knees, I ended up having the car running almost perfect (still on 98 octane for now) :
- Idle and low RPM are around 11 to 12 AFR (I can't really go leaner without having the car run like a mess for now)
- Most of low throttle/cruise : 13.5 to 14.5 on very light throttle
- WOT : around 13 to 13.5
- Cold Starts and Warmup are almost done (I'll wait for colder weather to see if anything runs okay)

I'm currently in the process of "freshening" the car a little bit before inspection, timing belt is done, I still need some motor/gearbox mounts, brake hoses and I guess I'm done 8-)

What a pleasure to drive this car once more, by driving it I realized I've missed it

This is awesome! What are you using for the EFI?

Woops forgot to mention that! A cheap Polish product http://ottomotive.pl/joomla3/index.php/ ... r-i-detail

For the price, I'm really amazed how this thing turns out. On long term however, I think I'll run an ethanol content analyser to avoid having to flash the car if I change fuel. Unfortunately I don't think this device can handle it (I mean I don't have a 0-5V programmable input for such an application).

Awesome project - had a friend that had a 20v and it sounded amazing and was impossible to kill. It also smoked like hell and was pretty quick!

I can only imagine how sweet it sounds with the carb on it :)
