The Rally Car
Re: The Rally Car
Freakin awesome stuff AJ! I wish I could have seen the car before I left the area. Looks like you're having a blast with it!

Re: The Rally Car
Thanks guys. Hopefully have another motor on its way. Got my to do list started. Gotta finish the gti first. Heads at the machine shop. Anyone put a front mount rad in an 80 5cyl?
Re: The Rally Car
So, you are staying 20v correct? as for the front mount rad, I think you would need to go B4 hood, but could possibly go with the B3 80 FWD setup. That thing was pretty far out twards the grill. I think you would need the FWD rad support(front cross member?) to make it all work.
The pics look awesome. I hope to someday be able to see this in person. Would love to take you up on the offer of a ride along.

Yeah. 20vt until a 20 falls in my lap. I did find a cheap 7A, and am still tempted to go that route, with reliability being a huge push. But I think I can make a 20vt work.

Re: The Rally Car
I love the super chicken! I think my biggest concern is cooling the thing. I'd poll slap a 1.8t in and leave it stock before I went 7AT. I want to race and drink beer on race day. Not spend every waking moment dicking around with this or that custom part. If I did a 7At I'd want all winter to put it together. Right now I want back on stage.!
Re: The Rally Car
win in my book
Re: The Rally Car
Yeah the chicken definitely has different cooling characteristics hahah
1.8t sounds nice though, lose a little weight and gain a lot of parts availability

And I too love the superchicken. At washington he actually led the factory team he works for saturday, 3rd overall sunday behind Higgins and pastrana but with a dnf on his first run.

No, I'm not even sure who owns it. Which team does he work for? I'd love to see some detailed photos of it

He's a local guy (VT) and works for the (also local) factory USA Subaru team. The superchicken has a website I think and limited pictures around, but it's pretty freaking cool and even faster.
His old car was a 20v running 2x CIS systems. Laugh all you want this thing placed 4th overall at Mt. Washington and destroyed at local hillclimbs back before I even had a drivers license

Re: The Rally Car
Yeah I'll get a couple to you tonight. I relied on the fact that fire caulk is an acceptable sealant. As such I gave a half in tolerance for gaps. Also I was unable to do it in two pieces. Ultimately I said screw it and used 5.
Fuel cell in the cq? I'd just make a box to go over the top instead of a full firewall.

Re: The Rally Car
well its gotta hold a fuel cell, battery, water meth pump and tank, diff cooler pump, and powersteering pump and res.
im making "box" between the strut towers, rearward, with a lid, and stopping short enough so I can still get to the taillights housings

Stripping down and labeling

I swear this is progress

See these are done!
Doing this thing effing right this time. Need new pins for the coil section, two injectors that just dont look pretty, a few gaskets, some radiator ducting and some carefully routed coolant lines. And she should be ripping again. Also redoing the dash to better mount guages.

Re: The Rally Car
Been a while- Got distracted with keeping a roof over my families head. One tip to any future homeowners, shell out for a mold inspection prior to purchasing. Had to move the wife and kids out of state to be with family because it causes some nasty health issues. On the plus side they will be moving back in on Thursday!
To catch up, I bought and then re sold the spare motor as I figured I wouldn't be getting around to the car anytime soon, but couldn't stay away from it anyway. I did remove the head and inspect the internals. The bottom end looked great, but the head was warped a bit. I had a local shop machine it who buggered it up and took .024 out of it. Then had another shop fix the buggered up job and they took another .010 out of it... Motor will be going e85 as soon as I get around to buying injectors
As shown above I built a fresh wire harness, am going to build the dash out of Aluminum and put in a bunch of idiot lights for coolant, oil etc. Had a buddy come over tonight and persuade me to take a break from the house to slap the motor back together. Need to install the harness, add fluids and put the front end back on, so he's threatening to bring beer over another night this week to finish it up. Might be driving again next weekend.
Terrible pics, just so its not entirely boring.

motor inManifolds, and fuel rail on- can see a test fit of part of the new harness on the coils in the back.- Ignore david

Anai Rally, Home Renovation, and Speed shop- Buddies Boxter came over to do motor mounts, brakes and wheel bearings on all 4 corners. I need a bigger shop- cant fit half my house, a race car and a friends toy into it so clearly it needs to be bigger!

Re: The Rally Car
Wiring harness looks legit. I'd like to do that on both cars, but at this point it's a round-to-it kinda job.

Re: The Rally Car
Harness went in and out a couple times, MLS head gasket, cleaned up the exhaust to manifold area, cleaned up the Y at the turbo, new top end seals, fixed up the intercooler a little (straightened the fins but it's still twisted and bent from stuff) Added ducting to the sideds of the radiator, and started buttoning her up last night. Some skid plate work to do, but I'll be going for a drive this weekend. Then I can do something about the spaghetti in the dash and clean up the switch panel

Re: The Rally Car
Good to see it coming back together. I still think that rally grill I found for you would look sweet on this.

Lol it looks fine, I just want to sling gravel. Fired it up an hour or two ago. Lots of little things fixed. Hoping to go drive this weekend.
