That really is a bummer Hank. No one likes to trash a motor, we all know that when playing close to the edge that sometimes its inevitable that we fall over that edge at times, but to lose a $1500 turbo in the process is hard to take. Bottom line is you should be up on the Oregon coast with your family digging clams, fishing and having fun in general. It would have cost a lot less! I still feel for you.

Thanks for the words guys. I would love to have this running in the next couple of weeks, but it will probably get the back burner for a while. I have most of the parts on order or in the shop, but the cost of the turbo is really going to set this back a couple of months I am afraid. Everyone be on the look out for a good used 35r. It can have compressor damage(light chips, exc) if that helps. It is a shame that the turbo died, as I really wanted a good benchmark from my 2.2L setup then jumping up to the 2.6L. I had a lot of data with the 2.2L
It will be back hopefully this fall for BBQ. Sad day indeed.

I am too addicted to the clean setup of the Garretts with the tial housing, plus I do not believe the holset hype.

I am trying to get rid of weight on the nose, not add 30lbs extra!
There is no way to get those variable vein turbos on a true equal length tube header like I have without getting rid of the fender liner. Still, I may be talked into putting one on a cast manifold like 034 has and testing with it on the stroker. It is pretty easy for me to make downpipes on my Engine/Transmission jig.

What are the chances of me having the same experience as this fella?
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/turbo-s ... hange.htmlMy bearings feel perfect, but the turbine toast. I think I am wise to take off the HTA wheel, put a regular 35r wheel back on it and send it in to an authorized dealer for hopeful ChRA replacement program. If I could get a new CHRA for under 500, I would count myself lucky and move on. Then I would just have to balance the wheel to the new chra and move on with life.
I'll call tomorrow to a few of the authorized dealers.

Forced upgrades!

I wish I could afford to have you build me some stuff so that I could contribute!
I'll be watching the rebuild for sure. Good luck!

Sorry Hank, that sucks. But that is a damn good deal if you can get a new CHRA for $480 !

Damn, tough week for 600+whp I5's...I've got a he351ve and a T3 cast log mani you can use. The rest should just be materials.
We need to do the dyno comparison anyway, right?

Fixed Geometry Turbo (I made it up).
The HE351ve adds complexity to what is becoming a rush build so it may be an option later but I'm thinking HE341cw(welded shut) for now.

Now that you are needing funds, might have to cut loose for that manifold to help your cause...

:stupid:
All else fails, get some Ferrea SS blanks that are close to the right length and have a machine shop cut them.
Or actually, here:

Guess it helps to search before posting.

my machinist was able to find ferrea s.s. valves for like $15 or $16 a pop. $17-$18 seems fairly common to see so not much of a difference.

Why not just get some supertech inconels instead? When i looked for valves I found some at 23$ ea, same as "2.0 lts/16v" plus supertech has the same locks. You need to machine the seats a bit to match up the extra .5 mm but you'd probs do that with new valves on a old head anyways.

I already have Ferrea stuff on order. That is the irony, but no sense looking back. Ferrea valves do require new locks, but that is because they have performance in mind. The keepers match their titanium retainers that are half the weight of the regular supertech retainers, and they are lower profile to allow for more spring and less bind on the crazy cams that Janis has. I will most likely go solid lifter on this next head, though I will run the 7a cams initially for testing with the stroker motor to get good data as to how the extra displacement behaves. I don't know if I will eventually get balls out cams like Janis, as i still want this car to be a road race car, but I most likely will get something similar.
