OOps well, not really forgot - heck I can't complain, I spent one session driving Hanks car, one driving Johns stock UrQ, one driving my student's Carrera 4S, one in the Red Pill and a Couple in the Blue Pill... And John, that stock UrQ was doing better than you think for all of its 160HP - plus the suspension made for a nice trip around the track.
I was completely exhausted by the end of the weekend, and I only had an hours drive home. The SoCal guys are troopers, 3-5 hour ride home after a weekend full of on-track driving is wicked.[/quote]

glad you had fun! While the handling dynamics of the locked rear aren't great, I agree w/ the lack of traction. I ran into issues where I was lifting/spinning my inside rear on my 4000 after the 20vt swap, and that was only w/ 195ish whp vs your 550!
You will always lose a little time w/ a locked regardless of what car you're driving b/c you're technically scrubbing one tire, which will slow you down.
And Sean, what you're feeling is how I felt after driving Wiley's 4000... my car felt (and still feels) slightly inadequate

I still had a hell of a time. The instructor was pretty good. I mean, honestly, quite a bit was required of him. He had a fairly new track driver in arguably the hardest car to drive at the event. He had to teach me a new track layout, work on car dynamics, and make sure he got home safely. This car is terrifying from the passenger seat. When I went with Sean, there were a few times I caught myself clinching my teeth, which is a fear mechanism of mine. When we would go down one of the big sweepers on the track at 110, I would see him in the corner of my eye letting his hands pump in order to relieve anxiety. Poor guy.
I just wish he would have trusted me a tad more and help me learn my car. The instructor comments you turn in reflected a terrifying car, not really the driver.. Okay, maybe the driver a little too!

Hank, I had a very similar experience the first time I took my 4kqt on a track. My instructor seemed to be scared shitless. His vib really didn't help me feel comfortable and all I was was worried about making a mistake.
I've since had some really good instructors, Justin included. :-)

Let's face it, it takes a certain level of confidence to be in the passenger seat of a car at a high performance driving event. Even more when the vehicle has over 300 hp, and you don't have access to the steering wheel or brakes. Add a few more hundred hp and you compound the issue.
I recall talking about this with some of the NAAC instructors....back around 2000, you dealt mostly with cars under 200hp and an occasional 250-300 hp Bimmer or Porsche...now, the skies the limit.
My last event as a yellow student I was in a run group with 911s, Corvettes, and an RS6....in my stockish 150kmile CQ with something less than 160 hp...I had fun, but killed my tires playing in the group....and my late braking coming off the main straight to keep some speed going into the corners had my instructor a bit nervous too.

Understatement.
Sideways UP an on-ramp and hitting 115 before you get half way up. 2nd and 3rd gear acceleration so sudden and forceful, yet nowhere and nothing to grab onto on the passenger side. Putting one foot on one side of the footwell and the other on the other side for stability doesn't help either. 100% pure adrenaline, with half of that from the fear of being handcuffed on the side of the freeway for all the world to see.
I don't blame your instructor at all!!!

Peter, I agree with you to an extent, however, if you are going to instruct, you really need to be prepared for this sort of scenario. There are ways to control the nOOb driver in a very fast car, it just takes more work and much faster response on your end as instructor. It is imperative you cover the basics with the student beforehand. There is also a duty of event organizer to pair up students and instructors properly - don't put a new instructor in this car. Same as you wouldn't necesarily put new instructor with well advanced driver sometime.
I'm sure the car is fast, but just imagine how much faster it would be if that instructor was driving it as his own? For that reason, instructor should be ok in there. Of course,there are extreme examples, and Hank's car might just be one of them. I certainly don't know for sure, but would love to right-seat him.

I ended up with 245-40-17s in Hankook Venus v12s. I like them quite a bit. Very quiet on the freeway and breaking loose but pretty good grip. They are pretty narrow for the contact patch because of a very round shoulder when compared to other 245s but people swear by them for an entry level high performance summer that can put up with a track day or two. I will try to put 9" x 17s on soon and try them in 265-40s next time around I think.

I liked my 'kook R-S2s and have been shopping the R-S3s and a few others for this summer. But those look like a good value if they can take what you dish out.
