Attached is an overlay of a built local HTA3586 EVO 9 RS and my car. His run was in 3rd gear (not sure if that makes any difference).

Cool, so logs show about 62% DC on the injectors, for a total of 6800cc/min used. Sean's car uses roughly 6050 at 87% DC with 1390cc injectors, so you probably are an honest 60-70whp more on my dyno, or roughly 700-710whp on mine or Marc Swansons. That is a shit ton of power, and right on the edge for what is possible for a HTA3586r.

Gear doesn't matter unless they aren't using the absorber, but that doesn't make sense. I think he just needs longer pulls like Brady said.

Good job Nick.

Figured we might as well overlay Taco's future build.

Yeah it's Pete's car. I think it's 10.5:1 2.0 if I recall correctly. Stock port head, cams, hardware. I will get specifics.

He might have some Buschur Racing hardware sprinkled in the head, but not sure... nice overlay! Is that FTG gearbox installed already?

Hank,

Please be one meeeeeellion percent sure that I was not slagging on you or your dyno or your operation of it! It's rather a case of my seeing red when I saw dyno x reads higher/lower than dyno y so the numbers are REALLY z percent higher than what dyno x read. But there is a distinct lack of enough information for anyone to make those claims.

The power is what it is on any given dyno operated in a given way.

By the way, maybe it's a Dynapack-specific thing, but I have noticed that gear choice DOES make a difference. The numerically higher the overall gear ratio (and therefore the slower the wheel/hub speeds) the higher the power. Only a few percent difference, but when you're talking 800whp.....!!

1:1 doesn't make a difference either. 4th gear 1:1 will read lower than a 3rd gear pull of the same engine RPM sweep rate on the same car.

Go Nick Go! 800 is soooooo close.
Cheers, Brady

Brady,

I didn't think you were, my novel was pretty much the same frustration you have, in that people get hung up by the number game instead of looking at baselines and deltas. If the dyno operator has a stock STI or EVO on file he can overlap, that is usually the best way of figuring out how a dyno reads. Most awd dynos will of had atleast one of those cars on their dynos in the history. I keep both of those run files on my desktop for fast overlay when I sense a customer is getting worried about numbers. If a big turbo makes 440whp on my dyno instead of 525 he made last month on X dyno, it is easy to just say, look, you are making double what a stock STI is making, and they are rated at 300bhp.

On my dyno, the only thing that changes with gear is the spool, as the closed loop PID doesn't work very well in holding incremental climb rates. But I could get identical numbers in 2nd on a 500whp by just having a bunch of load on the thing. I actually tested just that a couple of mnoths ago with a stock 7a that struggled to turn the rollers in 4th :) I have heard the dynopack gear ratio variance and frankly that makes me scratch my head. If by doing a wheel speed Calc, you determin overall ratios, then it is just a plug and play formula for rpm in respects to the strain gauge.

Hi Hank (and Nick and others. Hope you don't mind this sidebar...),

The Dynapack is good at keeping the sweep rate on target regardless of gear, but the PID is not adjustable, so it better be good!

With the gear calc, the dyno takes the actual torque measured at the hubs and divides it by the overall gear ratio. It's that simple. The difference in output in different gears seems to point to increased drivetrain losses at higher road speeds, or maybe that when the meshing gear teeth have closer and closer tooth counts, they don't transmit the power as efficiently.
Cheers, Brady

Yeah... the haters are rampant! Power under the curve is indeed important, but as long as you can stay in the powerband, that's what matters most. Who cares if you make 500 wtq for 5000 RPM if you don't ever use it? That's great for a road-racing car, but for a highway monster like this, it doesn't matter at all.

Yeah, reving to 8500 and having more load on the dyno would yield a powerband twice as fat (another 1000 rpm) and give it less of a lag appearance. Also, the dyno operator did you no favors by starting the pull at 2000 rpm. On stuff like that, if you scale it to 3700 or 4000, the powerband looks a lot fatter.

It did dawn on me on the way to work today while driving an URQ that the redline in that car is where this car spools on the street. LOL
