haha read what I said above, I'm waiting on my first paycheck so I can pay the weldin' man.

Just ordered more 3" aluminum piping than I'm going to know what to do with! It doesn't leave me with much money for gas to get to work next week tho lol.
I get my first paycheck on the 25th! Its only for one week since I'm starting in the middle of a pay period, but its enough to get this project rollin! Thats next Friday

I also need to order a new dp flange for this turbo. I can't find the one I have for the life of me! I don't understand why. Sooo I'm getting a custom CNC'd one lol. Its going to be decked flat and 1/2 inch thick so I think it should be nice. That is literally the last piece of the puzzle I think (minus bolts for the wastegate and that downpipe flange).
I also received my oil filter housing flange and $20 worth of nuts for the exhaust manifold (just four nuts...yeah...) from 034 and they sent a bunch of stickers too. Thanks

Then I got my spacer T3 flange and a new wastegate flange to make my dump tube work with the new wastegate placement.
The ONLY problem is that the gf has invited me to go to Busch Gardens for the weekend of the 25th...FUHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Yeah, I gave her a hard time about it but the truth is it will give me more time to make sure I have every nut and bolt. I'm tellin' ya though, I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve. I can't wait to get this thing finished. It looks like its going to be July 2nd when the shit hits the fan

unless my buddy has somewhere to go which is understandable since its 4th of July weekend. No matter what happens, it feels good to be productive and making that cheeeese errrry day :woowoo: :-D

Awesome, sounds like a plan.
Where are you getting your custom cnc'd flange from? I'm probably gonna need some custom cnc action (laser or plasma) on my manifold adapter thing when I make it.

Chris, you may have answered this at some point and I just missed it, but what are the power goals for this? Or phrased differently, what do you expect to be making after Holset?
Posted: Thu Jun 17, 2010 5:15 pm
by loxxrider
OK I'll outline it from now until my final goals.
For now, I expect to make no more than 230whp or so on the Holset because I'll be running stock injectors. 230whp may be optimistic to be honest. I don't think I'll spend much time tuning on the stock injectors because its just boring AND I predict boost creep issues with this wastegate placement on a turbo that really wants to make a lot of boost. I think there is a 9psi spring in my 38mm now and I'm sure its going to creep up. I can't have that on stock injectors. I think on this Holset 8psi might max out the duty cycle.
The next step is ID1000's. That will allow me to hit 300awhp and MAYBE I'll turn it up and see if I can make 350awhp on the dyno. I am pretty confident with my tuning and I'll have my friend who is a tuning god there with me to play with stuff. I don't expect to do too much because the dyno time is PRICEY (have to go to USP for the closest AWD dyno). Maybe Chris will cut me a break. I'll need an hour max on the dyno I think.
Then its some sort of engine build. I may just go all out on the bottom end because it doesn't make too much sense to just do rods (money wise). I'll do SCAT or IE rods and probably some form of custom pistons. I don't want to drop comp ratio. I'm not sure I want to go with JE either. There are better companies out there, but the deal for the IE rods and the JE pistons is almost too hard to pass up. I may hold off on this while I try and source an ABZ

It depends how well the stock engine holds up. I think regardless of when I do this, I'll do some ARP studs and a head gasket since this sucker is leaking oil a tiny bit. On this setup, I want to see how much I can make on the Holset and the 034 log manifold. I'd hope for at least 500awhp.
So then the final goal...at this point all I'll need is some fuel supply work (the ID 1000's will suffice for this

), a tube header of sorts, some head work, and thats really about it aside from a little downpipe, IC piping, and oil line tweaking (maybe) all dependent on turbo choice and manifold design. I'm thinking I want to be in the 67mm range. Something like that should put me around 700whp no problem.
Of course there are other things to consider like an 01E, badass clutch, driveshafts, etc...but those are all just things I will sort out as they break lol. I already know built 01E is a must though. I'll have one ready for when the time comes as long as its not before the Holset comes off.
I also know it aint cheap. That doesn't matter. The Holset build hasn't been cheap either (its all relative really), but I've gotten the whole thing done including purchase of the car in roughly two years on a college budget. I think thats not too bad!
When it all comes down to it, I really don't have a solid power goal. My goal is more to be spinning tires in 3rd gear from a roll. I don't know why...so don't ask me. Its just my goal. There are lots of variables that control how that will happen and I don't care how it gets there. I want it to do that on skinny tires and hook up on fat ones and or drag radials, etc. Anyway, you get the idea. I've been in two quattros that spin second on a roll. Marcs v8tt and a B5S4. Both making 500whp or under, so I feel like being in the neighborhood of 700awhp (with the ability to be down at 400whp if I want depending on boost) should make for a pretty fun ride

I don't know whats realistic here or not. I'm just rambling. All I know is I won't stop until I'm either happy or scared. Who knows when that will be. Thats the fun of it! :bashtard:
ugh sorry for writing such huge responses...I guess I just like to write and plan. Its nice to think about what I've got in store for the future. OK, I'm stopping now :slap:

Haha, I get how that goes. Usually when I post things I end up trimming the post down to a more manageable length. So basically, on the Holset and stock(ish) motor, you're shooting for 300-350ish? If I'm reading right.

Yep, thats the correct interpretation.
That should keep it safe (knock on wood).

man what did you do with those baller bbs or porsche wheels :? but the s4 wheels look good, dont waste money on wheels!!

by loxxrider
yeah, I know...I'm focusing on trying not to spend money on them actually.
They were Porsche wheels, but I'm a wheel snob and couldn't stand the fact that they were reps. I loved the way they fit on the car, but I traded them for the S4 wheels and some two-piece BBS's. I've been working on the BBS's and just need tires and some bolts to fit them. Thats roughly $400 worth of stuff that could be going to this car or the 90 though, so we'll see where everything goes. The fitment on the BBS's is ridiculously awesome, so there is potential for good stance again in the future.

real bbs= win :-D im not a fan of reps either but they did give your car a clean dtm style look

I agree. The new ones should do an even better job of that I think.
Funny, I just had a dream that I drove on them to a show or something and my tires all popped and I ruined them all lol. What a terrible dream!

ALRIGHT, FIRST OF ALL
I want to get this mofo done ASAP!! I would be doing it on Friday but the gf is taking me to Busch Gardens. It will be good because I get to see a friend who lives in the area too.
So I was planning on doing it next friday (the 2nd), but my bud is going to be out of town. MAJOR SADNESS :( :( :(
:curses:
So now its tentatively scheduled for the 9th! Its so frustrating having everything ready to go but not having a welder to get the job done.
And now I present you with some pictures to hold you over

My friend Nathan and I picked up another H1C the other day for his Honda. Found it on craigslist, and when we got there I was pretty surprised. I've had both the big and the small H1C, but I guess I forgot there was a medium one. Mine is 56mm comp wheel inducer, the medium one has a 50mm inducer. The exducers are both 82mm on the comp wheel though, and of course the exhaust wheels are identical.
Here they are together

and enough of that, on to my new parts

There are two different ways I've thought up for routing my IC piping. The first picture is always how I envisioned it in my head. (disregard the couplers...they are for mock-up only. Its a little difficult to mock up with weld-on couplers

)

The bottom pipe is supposed to come up vertically after it makes the first 90 shown in the picture. I just don't have the last bend cut up to accomplish that yet.
So when I went out to the car to see how that might work, I discovered that this option probably isn't the best idea. Pretty sure its not going to be possible to do it that way because of the way things actually sit in real life. My brain is good at imagining, but not that good.
So the next best thing I could come up with was this...(the upper pipe was also shortened once I had it on the car lol I have no idea what I was thinking)

I dunno how its really going to be, but I'm pretty sure it will have to be something similar to the second option. I just wanted to make sure I have enough bends (and I do).
The piping really surprised me too. Its nice, bare metal that actually semi-polished. No ugly plasti-chrome coating or anything, so I'm super happy about that.
There isn't anything holding me back now at all. Just time!!! I still have to order a flange and go run to the hardware store for like 7 bolts, but thats it. Everything is lined up and ready to go.

Cool beans! Can you measure the width from the head mounting surface to the widest part of the compressor.
