(looking good, remember when i was this close w/ mine....)

i had initially wanted a electric ps pump, once i started to have all the parts in front of me it looked alright to run the 4kq ps pump to tension the waterpump vbelt. the alternator and ps pump and ac all run off the serp.

i now have the bbm 16v/aba crank pulley and am going to use my 12v vr6 wp pulley to run the wp, alt and oem mk3 tensioner w/o ps at all

im prob jsut going to loop the resevoir through the rack and leave it for now til i go electric pump, that gets me even more clearance up front and a single belt with oem brackets and tension, seems like the way to go

My 5 cyl is fine with manual rack, just find one...So much easier and less clutter in the bay...

dude, the available torque output of your arms might be a bit above average jim, those of us scrawny basterds have a bit more trouble with manual steering ;)

Update time

Ive been hard at work building an exhaust for the car. Ryan got a great start on it, built the downpipe completely and tacked on the vband flange. I finally got the last few pieces I was waiting for and it was time to start building. Building this exhaust was a lot easier than building my cq exhaust ( yes ill post pics soon).

Im using a k24 flange to 3” cone transition from efiexpress, then going 3” past the carrier bearing and tapering to 2.5” , then a 12” striahgt through resonator from vibrant, then a short section of 2.25” over the axles and into a cq stebro muffler that I had lying around. There is a vband connection between the over axle and rear dif mount and another at the bottom of the downpipe. With the chop saw ready and the mig/tacking welder hooked up I set to work

And onto the pics

Ok more exhaust, mostly mockup pics.
Image

I have the front section done all the way to the carrier bearing, and the rear portion done to about a foot in front of the rear subframe. I needed to get these pieces fully welded before I finished, as I didn’t want it to shrink too much. The way its sitting currently with the resonator in the valley under the rear seats, the exhaust tube I’m going to tack on the rear of the tunnel section slides right into the vibrant resonator tight and smooth, so it’s a quick install and tack and the last bit of the system is off to Higbee Fab for finish tig’ing / backpurging.

Hell yeah! That exhaust is looking great.

Side question for a friend that wants to do this; will a VR6 bolt to a stock 4000 trans? I believe 034 sells an adapter plate.

as far as i know the adapter would work with te 016 bell housing pattern but theres not a clutch thatll work,
the adapter works with o1a/o1e so hed have to make that change

a vrt will eat up an 016 quickly anyway so its a trans swap that has to happen sooner or later anyway

cq exhaust update to come, now thats a real exhaust

I modify flywheels that make the 016 a bolt on, but yeah, over 450whp is asking for broken second gears in an 016 config

Ok update time, ive been slowly collecting interiors bits, and now that I have it all its time for some refreshing. I bought a set of red leather door panels from mike (audisport4000) and recently acquired the seats from ryan from mikes old car. I had also picked up a set of d11 v8 all red taillights with the intent to sell them but alas, im going to run them on this car. With neon orange on the outside and red leather throughout the interior we will be rolling redneck rich for sure!! Ahah

The door panels have some peeling that needs to be addressed. Ive gotten all the small black trim pieces off the panels now I need to condition the leather and try to get it to stretch back out a bit.

The map pockets I have were in pretty good shape but with the usual cracks. I glued the cracks and also adhered small washers to the inside of the mounting holes for some more strength.

Ok back to updatage!!!

So I got around to doing a bunch of smaller things, that were really just slowing down bigger and better stuff, so they are done

I got my aeb oil pan tapped for ½” npt, I have a 45 degree/10AN adapter that has been deanodized and will be snugged tight to the correct “clocked” position and be welded after to keep it from moving evar.
Image

I “rebuilt” my driveshaft from the 4kq with the rear portion from a b3 cq d/s. my rear section got abused in towing/impacted and it was just easier to pop off the cq rear and it went right back together with a new carrier bearing, itll be fine.
Image

I made up and had ryan weld on a pair of m6 bungs on the back of my intake manifold, ill use them to keep lines and wires etc tied down and in the right spot.
Image

I cut apart a scrap hood that jim had lying around to use the raintray vents on my 4kq fenders. Im going to run a few of them horizontally on the front fenders just rearward of the turn signals, the passenger side to help the intake air and the driver side will give air to my oil cooler which is mounted closeby. Should be pretty clean when im done with it.
Image

My bumper mount plastics slots were hardly there at all so I removed the rest and will be mounting the front bumper sides with 2 dzus fasteners on small pedestals.
Image
Image

Aeb oil filter housing is installed now I can run some more wiring and turbo oil feed line etc
Image

I also installed my racepart solutions, tial knockoff bov. So I can start running vac lines off my IM

Ok a little more, since I decided we just had to go front mount radiator half way through the build I had to rework my boost piping. Its all done now and fits well, it’s a bit snug where the intercooler inlet/outlet go past the radiator mounts, but a little bit of rounding the edges and itll be perfect.

the new piping clears the water lines nicely, and still leaves me plenty of room where the old side rad. was to mount my oilcooler and catchcan etc

Ok, I’ve been working on figuring out how I will run the belt setup and I think I’ve got a solution. I used a 12 vr6 ( I’m using an AFP pulley but all 12v vr6 pulleys should work fine) water pump pulley to convert it to serpentine only. The tensioner bracket is mk3 ABA. The alternator is b3 I think, and Is currently just hanging on one bolt. I will have to build a lower bracket for this, if this is how I will ultimately run it.

the alternator needs a bit more space to alight it perfect, but theres plenty of thread left to add a washer behind the alt. pulley

the new pulley on the ABA is a Dayco 89051, 76mm 6 rib serp idler pulley
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DAC-89051

The steering rack will be converted to manual. So I will be able to rid my engine bay of the pump, lines and reservoir. I drove jims car with the manual rack a while ago. The steering felt nice and responsive, it was a tad heavier than I wanted by just a bit, still nothing like the number power assisted rack. I do still want to go manual rack. I think the shorter, much lighter motor in combination with moving it back towards the firewall about an inch, should lighten the front of the car up as well. I think it’ll be right nice.

Here’s the pics of how I plan to route the belt, lmk what you think

SHE HATH NOT BEEN FORGOTTEN!!!!!

so i took a 6 week break from this project to get a bunch of chassis fabrication done on the cq vrt and am finally getting back to this!
carpet has been pulled and cleaned/shampooed several times by Toph, thanks again
there isnt a wear hole in the entire carpet, no heel holes on the drivers side, nothing! it sooo clean and actually BLACK!!!haaha

i jsut need to make a hydro handbrake mounting bracket as well as an ecu/relay mounting area where the stock a/c stuff was under the glovebox
then the carpet can go back in

the built head and the bottom end (stock for now) will be bolted together shortly. i need to send Janis some moeny for the oem NEW ABF timign belt backing plates and covers, as well as some timign belts.

i have all the stuff for my vems wiring, so i will get the motor bolted together, plopped in the bay and get to wiring.

im 90% sure im on the final version of my serpentine belt setup.

i also got a third pair of hella 500's last night from a friend, so i figure 6, 500's on the bumper bar will work well until the rest come in, then ill be running 4, 5" 500's, and a pair of 7" 700's on the bumper as well. and on the roof rack bar a pair of the 500 floods and a pair of 500 pencil beams! :)

BRING ON THE NIGHT SUN!!!

UPDATE!
I got my catback exhaust finished up to the rear muffler. Im using a cq stebro rear muffler box, I just need to move the tips over to the b2 exhaust tip bumper relief which is further offset than the b3.
Image

While poking around back there I noticed some bad rust on the seam/lip just rearward of the muffler. I had to cut out about 6-8” of this to route the dual outlet/tips. So I ended up cutting out the whole piece and replacing it.
Image

I got it all cut out and prepped for the replacement sheetmetal.

I cut the pieces out of some spare sheet. Then I used a pair of extra wide sheet metal bending pliers and they worked pretty well, its only 22 gauge.
I got it all welded in, primed and seamsealed.
Image
Image

I also replaced the rear exhaust hangers with universals as the oems were getting crunchy.
I got some rugged rubber hangers and the muffler sits in there nice and cozy.
well i dont have a pic of the drivers side hanger, and i forgot to trim down the passenger side hanger ha its a bit long

Ok some more,

Over the summer I got a pair of front cq hubs/knuckles and I already had a pair of 90q 20v for the rear. I got them pressed out by Jim, thanks again, and blasted up and ready for powdercoating at Ryan’s, thanks again. They came out great! Gloss black and ready to be put back together. Marc @ efiexpress got me a set of wheel bearings and we were in business! Once again, Jim came through and got them all pressed back together for me.

The car is mostly a rural thrasher mobile, so suspension need not be low. Im running all 90q 20v springs and struts as well as 26mm sways front and rear. Im also looking at getting a 21mm 4k fwd bar for the front.
the car should sit a good bit higher up with the 90q susp. and the 4cyl upfront vs the i5

Image
Image

A while ago I got around to making some trans mount arms. I took some pics at the beginning and here they are. They are finished and installed but ill snap some more pics tomorrow.
Image
Image

Tomorrow's update
-finished trans mount arms
-exhaust tip extension to rear bumper
-serpentine belt / accessory finalization!!
