Hank.
I love your posts, you inspire me to get off my arse and work on these cars.
The fact you can fabricate and tune your ur-q the way you do is bleedin' awesome

Given all the other things you have on the go, I have tremendous respect.
Keep us motivated!
:bump:
cheers, Mike

Hap, real men use a rotary slide rule=the E6B!
Just shot my first ILS down to minimums in a twin......it was intense! Okay, it may have been in a sim

......but its log-able time, both multi and instrument time!

Ah the good 'ol whiz wheel. I used to think they were pretty cool when I was working on my private back in the Dark Ages. Haven't touched, or even seen one in years. I don't even know what ever happened to my old one. I think I would rather re-learn one of those than all the new Nav stuff. I was trying to navigate my way around a Honeywell FMS on a Pilatus the other day, and was shell shocked by all the functions available. Technology has changed so much in such a short time.

Weeell, that was the ILS/LOC RWY 26 at KFTG, which has a published MDA of 200ft and 1/2mile, so it is approaching CAT I. But Hap, i'm an unemployed pilot in training here! I'm a long way from CAT II's, let alone a CAT III A,B, or C! I'm flying the Seminole and while it does have a complex EFAS with Flight Director, the GPS for example, is still the old KLN89B.
I shot the approach down to the VDP and went missed to practice the missed procedure. Held, and then reshot the same. Popped out just above minimums. It wasn't exactly pretty, but i was able to fulfill all of FAR 91.175 so it passed! 8)

I got my private ticket about a decade ago, and have been away in youth/athletic ministry since, until the last year. In that time, it is amazing how much has come down the pipe in terms of technology. The term "flying the magenta line" meant nothing to me back then. Now most trainers have panel mounted GPS let alone systems like Garmin 1000's! Flying the old six pack with ADF's and simple VOR navigation was a different world!

That ILS was probably flown to Decision Height, no? A VDP is more of a Non-Precision Approach type of thing. Sorry but I was a Flight Examiner in 3 different aircraft and 3 different Commands in the Air Force and was also an FAA Designated Check Airman, Standards Captain, Training Check Airman, Line Check Airman and all around fun kind of guy for United Air Lines so its hard for me not to critique.

Critique from you is a compliment, Hap! 8) Yes, flew to the DH/MDA, as well as timed the VDP....my instructor(retired FedEx capt, and Continental capt before that) insists on flying timed and DME to the VDP even on precision approaches.

I would be all over them if they were 17x9s, 112x5, 16lbs or less and with an offset of about 28mm...
That sounds like the Enkei rpf1, and that will probably be my next wheel to go on this car..
I have been getting a stick up my butt lately to try my hand at sacrificing some a couple of a8 wheels spares to stretch one of my fat fives an inch to make a set of 17x9 wheels..

Club racers do it all the time to get wider wheels.. I gots the tools, just not sure if I like hte fat fives that much

I'd avoid places where sticks go up the butt. A wild hair maybe but no sticks. When you modify a rim, do you add a lip? or is the extension somewhere in the middle?

Add on the inside of the barrel, pretty much in the middle. The good shops can weld in a section without having to refinish the wheel face... Pretty cool

you can get 17x9s in 5x112 with an ET of 28... but you may need to discuss wheel weights and models with someone.
RPF1s are that light at 17x9?

I should specify that I really only care for the TH2's. They have a very unique look.

But TH2s (I like your thinking cuz that's what I have on my urq, 17x7.5 though) aren't supposed to be light. They're supposed to be strong first, then light. They're rally wheels. I think they do a pretty good job on the weight side, considering how much metal is on them, and that they're only cast.
