they existed....possibly with too much hair gel and too much love for volvos. You made comments regarding queerness of fwd volvos and something about mothers needing cars returned before morning....[/quote]

More info. I went to put the head back on, and noticed a contact on the head..

Pulled the pan and the rod caps.. The #1 offending cylinder, with the contact, also has a chewed up bearing. It isn't spun, but it is the only one without the coating on it..

thoughts?

I'm still struggling to see how that little of material being worn off would allow the piston to hit the head. now with the head decked that will bring it even closer...

That's what it takes to beat the banana :( That is really strange, it seems as though it was hitting quite regularly and forced wear on the conrod side shell? I wonder if your block has been decked before.

The hit is on the squish portion of the piston, which by the way are Wisecos, so decking shouldn't change that dimension as the squish on the head is level with the deck. If there wasn't enough clearance for squish, then is seems like the other cylinders should show some signs of contact also. At 8500rpm things stretch a bit and that area needs to have enough tolorance to accomodate that stretch, but again the other hole look fine.

Well, I spent the morning measuring crap. Pistons all sit the same amount proud with new bearing shells it all looks good. I really just think I had a bearing that either had a shaving get in it, or was bum. Seeing how I ran over 25K miles on that shell and beat on it, I think it had the right.

The old bearing had about .019" worth of slop, and that is probably why it contacted the head. I really wished I Had the drive to plastigauge the squish zone with the gasket on. I may put my old headgasket back on, and just see what kind of clearance there is..

It all looks good though. The sky looks threatening, and I plan on doing the half track at Millers in the morning with the projected 6" of freshies!! Tonight is shot, but I plan on waking up at 3am to ensure a 9am departure.

I'll keep you updated..

I still have a hard time with the notion that you couldn't hear that kind of slop in the rod. I think that it is time that you quiet that exhaust down a tad. Are you just going to throw the one bearing in there? You ought to measure the old compressed gasket and piston proud to at least calculate your squish spec.

I think if I were you and you did get it together before 9:00am that you might want to turn down that boost a bit so you don't come home with banged up body parts. Nothing worse than fresh painted dents!! :D

Hank, I don't know what type of an event is happening at the track but I'd be very careful about your plan there...you don't need to be tired at all when trying to drive that car around the track. It won't be the first nor last track event that was missed due to broken car. Don't feel bad or pressured to be there...my $.02

With that said, best of luck putting it back together. I am surprised you have 25k miles on that engine?! It's probably combo of high revs and even higher boost levels that did that bearing. Surprising it's #1, as I thought it's usually #5 that goes on these cars.

Good advice there Peter.

I may have the cylinder naming wrong. The bad bearing is the bearing closest to the front bumper of the car. Sorry, I am a newb. Is that cylinder 5 or 1?

Jim, it was good seeing you in Vegas where I had showered or slept in the last 24 hours.... Well, after I caught up on sleep :)

1 is closest to the bumper, 5 is closest to the firewall...

hank you are (at least did have) having a lack of snub mount issue and would hate to add one back in right where all of the the front end go fast goodness happens at the front end of your car, so have you ever looked into adding a snub cradle design to the other "lever arm" ie the transmission area?...may be worth thinking about...just my .02
