Good news is that no signs of detonation exists in the combustion chambers. They look awesome actually. E85 is neat.

The head lifted on cylinder 1 next to the squish area on the intake side of the piston. The offending channel of water came from the head side of the gasket, not the block side. All in all, it looks like a pretty good situation considering.

The car was not even hot. Infact, I took a friend for a ride in it, and we tooled around for a few minutes to get up to temperature. I would say that water temps were in the 170 degree range when it lifted. Immediately I noticed the smoke out the back of the car, and thought the worse.

Perhaps I should have sprung for an oringed block? Perhaps I need the studs Hap has been talking about?

I would not expect to see detonation. A guy I know put a rod through his block, B6 1.8T, on E85. It was cold and IIRC he had been advancing his timing here and there then BOOM.

Glad it's not all bad news!
If Hap's running it, you know it's proven!

I know i have never posted on your thread before, but i figured i'd put my .2$ in :P

I was gonna say the same thing about o-ringing the block and using a copper head gasket.

Ive heard talk about Hap's new studs. Arent they ARP's new design?

Sucks to hear that your urq has been pulled from DD duties.

I'm sure it won't take long to get back on the road with your resources.

There is a lot to be said about reliability....but after Friday's ride, living on the ragged edge is totally worth it!!!!!

hmm, I'll be curious to see what you do to resolve this.

I have the standard ARP studs ready to go in when I do a build. Hope I don't need something else

I guess, did Javad use anything different than the standard ARP studs? How often did U check the torque? Mine have not moved in a while, but I had to tighten them a few times at first.

Jim, I had retorqued several times as well. One interesting thing did happen upon removing the head. The furthest forward stud on the offending cylinder had the stud come out when I loosened the nut on the ARPs. I should have retorqued them, but I only had 45 minutes to pull the head(which i did :) )

Javad's 20vt has been oringed since the beginning. Hap is the highest HP, non oringed block I have heard of, and in conversation with him, he is thinking he may have done the same thing to his head.

Right, 0rings should not eliminate head lift, but it does seal better at any give clamp. High HP guys in other circles get away with ARP's and MLS gaskets by making almost mirror finishes on the two decks. The added surface area helps seal in high cylinder pressure engines.

One week...bah!...a couple hours sounds about right...this boy can get some sh!t done!

So, this was from 9/30/2010, when I was down at the lab to get my race cat v-banded in.

.....and this was about 1 week later (during which he was working on a few other cars, including the cursed lago VR6T....and a couple other things aside from the body work and paint, like figuring out how and doing the 01E install).

This is a little motivation for all of the lazy keyboard pounders having trouble making progress on their projects...

....and I hope to be at Miller Saturday, but I'm out of town and not sure I'll make it yet...

That is all

That shifter was horrible. I don't remember what the volvo kids did or what I said...but at that point I already had few beers.

yes, the solid linkage feels horrible. But it does shift very fast on a drag strip. :D

they existed....possibly with too much hair gel and too much love for volvos. You made comments regarding queerness of fwd volvos and something about mothers needing cars returned before morning....
