Anybody have a block heater or choice

Your mom has one in her Urq straight from Wisconsin. I was going to take it out when I had it tore down to the pistons, but the way things were going I just figured that pulling it out would just end up being a leaking freeze plug, so I left it in. I think it would be more of a pain to get out than buying new, but you are welcome to it if you want.

I would be interested in it. I do wonder what would be more effective, heating the fuel or heating the block. Heating the block has the advantage of having heat when you get into the car, and easier on the engine. If it was warm enough to heat the fuel enough to let it light off a bit better, it seems like the better option. I think heating the fuel would be the better option, as it would for sure help get it going initially. Once it gets 500rpm for the first time, it will sit and idle at 850 for hours without hesitation.

THey make heat pads for the oil filter/fuel filter that seem like they would do a pretty good job. They also make strips that would proably go on the bottom of the radiator pretty easily and heat the whole radiator up to 180 degrees. This might be nice.

I still like the freeze plug option the best as it would heat all the oil in the block, all the water, and even thefuel rail to an extent. They seem the most efficient of the block heaters out there.

I dont care that much, but my poor neighbors need to grows a few pairs. 10 minutes of cranking with an occasional backfire may get old this winter Also, it would be nice to not have the car on idle, as I can hear it in any room of my townhouse.

I think heating the gallon sized surge tank may be the ticket. It recirculates back to the from the fuel rail. So the heated fuel should stay in the circut on startup on those 5-32 degr3ee days.

Hank, you also could just back it down a notch and run regular gas, I mean really... Why create all that exrtra work to run E-85 thru the winter - it's the winter. That cranking and cranking and cranking is why most of us left CIS behind and went standalone to begin with, now you got yourself into that type of hassle again?

Probably because that notch is the equivalence of what your Lancia 16v would make NA, what your URQ made stock, and what made going 01e appealing. I have been setting up the car for what is about to happen. That is, 35PSI everyday, all day, rain or shine. All the supporting mods have finally made their way into the car and it is ready to rip. I'll be darned if a little frost will keep me from that glory.

This weather is sortof like Vegas, just 15 degree's colder for the most part. If you can baby it to life on e85 in the morning, you have an entire day of joy planned out. Besides, my son is coming home from the hospital in the monster URQ, not no stinking detuned one.

I am not going cruise up Parleys pass like I going up Pikes! When Kate is in the car, I keep it under 3500 to make her feel like it is a reasonable daily driver sort of car It has very mild manners when it wants to be mild. I still haven't been pulled over in it red.

I just drive the car all summer long sweating without AC thinking I wish it was winter so I could just have the heat slightly on, and 5C degree ambients to rip around with.

I used to run a freeze-plug heater in my car, it worked great in the winter. I want to say it was a Temro Thermostart, it's one of the bigger brand names, and I paid $20 from the FLAPS for it. Turn it on 1-2 hours before you start the car on E85, and you're golden...coolant temps would get to around 70-80F regardless of outside temperature. It just goes in the freeze plug hole right in front of the turbo coolant line. Just don't let the car sit for more than 5-6hours outside somewhere where you can't plug it in.

Sweet Sam. I dont think our winters are as harsh out west as you guys near the lakes. Like I said, it is at the most 15degrees when I wake up. It may hover around 32-35 degrees on bad days, but it is usually around 40 degrees most of the days. If I can combat that initial startup, and have heat a little quicker to boot, I will be more then happy to run 115 octane all winter line for 2.15 a gallon.

Temro's are all we use for block and sump heaters going into the frosty north and Siberia (seriously)...

Dude, if that's all the colder it ever gets, you don't need shit to start the car :jerk: . I didn't have problems down to somewhere below 5F, average. And that was with distributor ignition. Below zero was a definite no-go.

Don't let him fool you. When I rattled the windows at the trailer court with a 100+ redline shift that prompted a thrown rock dinging his new hood on the return trip... he couldn't even get the grin off his face.... or was it shear terror? Not sure, the passenger seat is pretty scary.

My trigger sucks on my car. Do you guys get 59 teeth on cranking? Mine jump around and gets lucky. I really would like to ge the car to fire up on the fist click. Once it is started, I have solid signal up to 8600, but it does a bit of guessing at the beginning. Match cold e85 with slower cranking due to battery/oil viscosity and it has a hard time waking up.

Yes David, the passenger seat is scary. BTW, the logs are showing a 5 second lapse from 60-110 at 27psi with a couple of misses.

I always had solid 59 when cranking. It was weird to watch Nate's car not want to start at all, then we swap pulleys and his starts but mine does too.

As for starting, I never ran e85 but my car would start really easy with 3B manifold on. later on, with ITBs it would start right away when cold but needed few seconds when hot...I never bothered to fine tune that.

Mine jumps around. I was going to try swapping the VR wires to see if it helps, but I usually fire pretty quick as long as I let the fuel pump prime for 3-4 seconds

034's logs at 5 bits per second, coupled with true tire diameter and math. On flat freeway it takes 24 pieces of data to get from 4050 to 7500. At 5 bits per second, that is 4.8 seconds(24/5) from a calculated 60mph-110.

I want to swap over to a serp setup at some point soon, and I will probably try my best to come up with a perfect pulley on that setup. I think some of my start up problems stem from the trigger wheel. I never see a 59 until it catches. Hot or cold, it doesnt care. One thing I noticed the other day when I was swapping ECU's back is that the shield wire on mine is not being grounded to the ECU. I wonder if htat is the interference at startup that give me wacky numbers till it settles at 59. I also will trigger hte ecu wif I tap the engine with a wrench or something else "loud". I have never seen a bad trigger event above 500 rpm though

Thanks for the coils my man. You and Chris get cool guys of the week for getting me setup before the weekend. Hopefully i can feel comfortable enough to perhaps take some laps on saturday.

On another unrelated note, I found out that my FPR is maxed out at 80psi. I either need a stiffer spring or another regulator. I'll probably try the former, and start looking for a good fuel labs or Weldon regulator that will let me set base pressure at 95psi. That should give me enough fuel to lock in at 35psi on e85
