Re: Ben's AAN 4kq project *snails pace/ preping for wiring h

Post by 85oceanic »

So while some of the big parts of my project have been stalled out because of layoffs at work I have decided to start the wiring game. This is my first time really doing a "major" wiring project like this. I am also reallllly used to Japenese and american wiring diagrams, not german. SO i am trying my best to muddle my way through them so I can do this right. I have decided to run VEMS for my project even though it may require a little extra wiring work. Saving 1000 bucks and having a nice LCD display sound very good to me.

Oh and I did get some more clean up and painting done, I was a total tard and didn't get a before shots. Rest assured they were nasty! Here is the driver side fender well after much cleaning:

and painted:

AND, on a little side note, I have decided to sell the Autotech cam gear, exhaust mani and K26/TDO4 hybrid to pay of other parts and really mostly because the cam gear won't work with VEMS, and the turbo and exhaust mani are not what I want to run when I start this thing the first time. IT's going to be 5857 OR BUST!

Whoa...I didn't know that kind of turbo was in your plans :)

Glad you are going VEMS too. You'll like it.

HAHA... ya I originally thought 3071r BUT I picked up the K26/TDO4 here on the cheap. But sense I got it I have mangaged to convince myself to wait and spring for the 5857. I also plan to hold out for the ceramic BB center section too. From what I have read this turbo will put me exactlly where I want my car to be at power wise and with all the mods I am doing I would really really like to see 400 to 500whp somday. I don't know of anyone runing it on AAN/3B yet either so I hoping it's a "first" in that respect :P . My plan is at first I will keep my boost low to save my 016 till I can go 01E or somthing along those lines. I already have picked up "Lifetime" warrenty CV shafts from napa so when they break it's just time lost not monies .

As for VEMS I have to admit I have been a bit of a skeptic, but I think I am going to give it a shot. It will save lots of money and from watching your thread and reading up on it, it seems like it will be somthing that I might be able to handle, even though I am a total virgin when it comes to this level of mods. SO I am going to keep my fingers crossed that I don't go and blow a bunch of chit up.

Ok, I am feeling a bit tarded today. I am working on getting my 4kq harness all preped up for VEMS (lableing wires, testing current tracks etc). SO I have a checklist for the swap:

ECM Power wire - Check/done/labeled
Ground - Check/done/labled
Temp Gauge - unchecked/unlabled
Tach - unchecked/ unlabled
Fuel Pump relay ground switch wire - need some help purty please!

Ok, so I have hit a roadblock on the fuel pump relay. I can't seem to get it to power up and power down through the 31b ground switch and I can't figure out why. I have been doing a lot of relay research and figured out what all the terminals mean (cross checked through several websites) and for the life of me I can't get my relay to respond like they say they should. Am I just being dumb, or missing somthing here? My understanding of the terminals goes like this:

On a #63 type relay:

15 - (+)Switched downstream of battery (from ignition switch)
30 - (+) Input FROM battery (direct)
31 - (-)Ground TO battery
31b - (-) Switched ground (to computer for independent control)
87 - (+) POWER TO fuel pump

Ok, so my problem is that I can't get the contacts to close when grounding out ONLY the 31b contact and powering #15. Also the contacts only close if I apply power TO 31 and ground out #15. SO is my relay fubar or am I missing somthing here? Anyhelp would be great. Thanks guys!

I can't help with the relay question, however.
The tach signal can be picked up with the small gauge, R/BLK wire with the ring terminal. Attach this to terminal 15 on the 3b coil.
The gauges... I removed all the sender wires from the 3b harness for the after-run switch, the oil pressure gauge, and the hi/low oil pressure switches. I used the stock 4k wiring for the after run, oil press sens, and hi-low switches. That way you don't need to splice those in inside the cabin. The oil pressure sens wire exists in the stock 4k wiring, unused though. It terminates inside under the center console. All you must do is add a pin to the other side of the connector and run a wire to your gauge (if you have one). The MFTS can also take the place of the stock 4k water temp sensor. Splice in the 4k gauge wire at the mtfs plug. The other wire from that sensor is a ground signal for the over temp warning light on the dash. That can be spliced into the MTFS, use the terminal labeled for autocheck. It's just a ground signal at 247*F... This is the way i did it. It requires a bit a rewiring but i feel it's a cleaner install. Hope that helps a little!

SOOO after talking to Marc some, I think I may have figured out my issue. The 4kq uses the ecm to send power up to the relay rather than a ground switch through the ecm to power it up. I will be switching that out for a different relay it looks like.

SOOO today is my first day off in basiclly two weeks... I took on a 2nd job just so I can fund the Audi....WOOT... but today for the first time really I felt really discouraged about the Audi. I'm in no way going to give up... just for the amount of time I have put into it so far I don't feel like I have crap to show for it yet. So I went out to it and just sat for a bit and ended up dosing off for like 2 hours in the back seat... and now I realize, I really need to get this bitch on the road so I can experience somthing of a reward for all the work that is going into it. Then as I go I can upgrade more and more. I am going to keep the T04 and run it on the stock mani because I already have coolent and oil lines that will work. SO here is a checklist for myself of crap that I have to do so that I can see my progress and get this shit done. That way I can start upgrading more and more and feel each part that I install and work out issues that arise as I go rather than having a crap ton all at once. Anyways, here is the checklist for stage one...

1. Finish rebuilding the engine with IE rods/pistons, coated mains, cam gear, efi express crank gear, etc
2. Order VEMS, injectors and LS2 coil stuff
3. Wire up the VEMS/ install display etc...
4. Order/Install rpi brake shiz, koni adj, BG springs and all other suspention goodies I already have
5. Install engine/tranny with Spec Stage 3+ with aluminum fw
6. Order/install 034 shifter
7. Figure out fueling stuff (FPR, rail, injectors etc)
8. Figure out my I/C set up/ order and install
9. build 3"DP with v-bands and efi express goodies
10. build exhaust simular to dereks set up or somthing (love the sound)
11. Test and base tune
12. Enjoy it!

NOW I am off to sulk and eat pizza.

Dont get discouraged! I am 100% confident that getting this car on the road will put a huge smile on your face on a daily basis :)

I know it will. That said, that sure is a hefty list. Getting a second job to fund the Audi is pretty gangster. I'd do it too if I had the time. Might need to sometime this school year! These things are not cheap. You have like 5k plus in parts listed up there lol. I am right there with ya except without a built motor.

Anyway, I gotta go to bed so I can have a nice, audi-funding filled work day tomorrow. Don't be discouraged! Your car is going to be awesome.

BTW, it seems like everyone is doing phases now lol. I like it. That usually means there is a phase two, three, and so on :D

Haha quite the list there man! If i may add my two cents. Knock a couple things off that list, it will make your life way easier. Talking from experience, things always get added as you go. Shit, i wasn't planning on having a built bottom end. My "list" is easily 3x longer than it was when i first started. I easily have $15k into my car. And i don't even have vems or built suspension. All those short trips to the store for one or two things add up realll quick... DON"T BE DISCOURAGED! I know exactly how you feel. I hit that point about december of last year. I think i went two months with out touching the car. HOWEVER! Once things start coming together, and you see that tiny point of light at the end of the tunnel, it's soooo worth it. (Ha, and I'm saying that without even having a running car yet!)

Thanks guys for the nice words! I really appreciate it! I know I have a big list of parts there and it's all going to cost me some big monies, but I think it will be worth it in the end. I HOPE to have most of it bought and paid for by spring time. My next big step is to get the engine finished up with the new goodies and that will feel really good to have out of the way. I am really hoping that Pacific waterlands gives me LOTS of inspiration and motivation. It is going to be sweet to see some of the MG cars there too. I cannot wait! :D

yes it is. dedication =] !!!!

well shoot. if i finish up before you ill make a road trip done and see just what is going on in La Grande. been a while since ive been there for more then a freeway pass.

I was planning on going to waterlands with the 90. might not finish in time but who knows. if not I will more than likely go anyways. If you need someone to rebuild your bottom end I might have a friend who could do it here. little bit further to drive though.

It's been awhile so I figured I better update! SO right now, I am still working on wiring things up when I have spare time. I took a break and started in on my 5 lug conversion. I went out to the local pick-n-pull and scored 5kqt front struts with G60s and the rear hub setup. I swapped the spring mounts off of the 4kq over to the 5kqt towers and they came out looking alright IMO. My next step is to get some new rear wheelbearings and clean up the front brakes. G60s isn't where I want to end at, but at this point it's a start. I didn't realize how much more clamping surface these had over the stock 4kq intill I saw them side by side! Woot! Here are some pictures for you enjoyment... :)

Looks good man :-) . It sucks working outside in the cold. I think some day I will convert to 5 lug but right now I'm enjoying the CQ speedlines on the 4k.

Thanks man! :) I used to be balls to the wall when it came to weather, rain, snow, wind, no matter what if I was going to work on it the weather be damned! I'm just not that hardcore anymore hahaha! I still haven't picked out wheels yet, sooo that is another thing I need to figure out. I know for my winter rims I want some kind of white 5 spoke, maybe somthing like B6 A4 wheels powdercoated white. As for my summer shoes, I have yet to decide. I am really tempted by Drag DR-34s.

At this rate it is going to be awhile. :( I will be really happy if I get to see it start before September. I will be able to work a LOT more hours once school is out for the summer so that will help buy a lot more parts. I have a solid 6-7k in parts to go, not counting the small crap. This is not counting any kind of decent paint either. My 4k has some of the worst clear coat peel I've seen hahaha! So little by little I will be getting closer. Maybe once it's on the road, one of my first trips should be up to the tri-cities area especially now that you have another geeker around!
